Zanzibar — The Spice Island

Zanzibar is not simply a beach destination. It is one of the world's most layered and fascinating islands — a place where centuries of Arab, Persian, Indian, African, and European history have created an extraordinary cultural tapestry, where the finest coral reefs in the Indian Ocean lie minutes from white-sand shores, and where ancient forests shelter wildlife found nowhere else on Earth.

The island sits approximately 35 kilometres off the coast of mainland Tanzania in the Indian Ocean. Its position at the intersection of historic trade routes made it one of the most coveted pieces of land in the ocean world — the seat of the Omani Sultanate, the centre of the global clove trade (earning it the name the Spice Island), and for centuries one of the primary hubs of the East African slave trade. Stone Town, the island's historic capital, carries all of this history in its architecture, its food, its language, and its extraordinary atmosphere.

Beyond Stone Town, Zanzibar offers some of the most diverse island experiences available anywhere. The north coast (Nungwi and Kendwa) has the calmest, clearest water and the finest beaches. The east coast (Paje, Bwejuu, Jambiani) is wilder, windier, and world-famous for kitesurfing. The southeast and southwest coasts hold the dolphin swimming at Kizimkazi and the ancient Jozani Forest. And offshore, Mnemba Atoll provides world-class snorkelling and diving in a protected marine reserve of exceptional biodiversity.

When to Visit

The Best Time for Zanzibar

Zanzibar is a year-round island destination. Each season brings a different character — here is how to choose the right time for your trip.

Jun – Sep
DRY SEASON ★ PEAK
Calm seas, excellent Mnemba snorkelling visibility, consistent southeast trade winds for kitesurfing at Paje, and cooler temperatures. The best overall time for most activities.
Jan – Mar
WARM SEASON ★ GREAT
Warmest temperatures and warmest Indian Ocean — ideal for swimming and snorkelling. Calm north coast. Dolphin sightings excellent. Fewer tourists than peak season.
Oct – Nov
SHORT RAINS
Short rains bring occasional afternoon showers but the island remains beautiful. Fewer tourists, lower prices, and dramatic cloudy light for photography. Still excellent for all activities.
Apr – May
LONG RAINS
Long rains. Some beach days are interrupted by showers. East coast conditions can be rough. Significantly lower prices. Marine life is excellent — the ocean doesn't know about the rain.
Haven Trails Tip: For the best combination of snorkelling, beach, and kitesurfing conditions, plan June–September. For warm water and fewer crowds, January–March is excellent. Contact us with your preferred dates and we will advise on what to expect.

Arrive Zanzibar — Stone Town Discovery
Zanzibar Abeid Amani Karume Airport Stone Town Sleep: Zanzibar Hotel

Your Haven Trails Zanzibar team meets you at the airport and transfers you to your hotel. Depending on arrival time, the afternoon and evening begin with the island's most extraordinary address: Stone Town — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa's most remarkable old cities. The winding lanes, intricately carved wooden doors, Arabic arches, Persian baths, Indian merchant houses, and Swahili balconies tell a story of centuries of trade, culture, and extraordinary confluence. Your guide leads you through the old city — past the former slave market, the House of Wonders, the Old Fort, and the waterfront where Omani dhows once anchored under the weight of cloves and ivory. Dinner at a Stone Town restaurant overlooking the Indian Ocean — fresh Zanzibari seafood, Swahili spices, and the sound of the warm night air.

Spice Farm & Mnemba Atoll Snorkelling
Morning: Spice Farm Tour Afternoon: Mnemba Atoll Snorkelling Sleep: Zanzibar Hotel

A morning spice farm visit takes you deep into Zanzibar's agricultural heartland — once the world's largest clove producer, the island's interior is a garden of extraordinary richness. Your guide picks fresh nutmeg, black pepper, vanilla, cinnamon, cardamom, and lemongrass from the growing plants and hands them to you to smell and taste. The spice farm tour is one of the most sensory and memorable experiences on the island. After lunch, a boat trip to Mnemba Atoll — a protected marine reserve a few kilometres off the northeast coast. The snorkelling here is genuinely world-class: coral gardens in exceptional health, green and hawksbill turtles, reef sharks, octopus, and a density of reef fish that makes every moment underwater extraordinary. On calm days, visibility can exceed 30 metres.

Dolphin Swimming & Beach Day
Morning: Dolphin Swimming — Kizimkazi Afternoon: Beach & Ocean Optional: Dhow Sunset Cruise Sleep: Zanzibar Hotel

The morning begins early at Kizimkazi — a small fishing village on the southwest coast of Zanzibar where resident pods of bottlenose and humpback dolphins are nearly always present. A local fishing boat takes you into the shallow bays where the dolphins feed and play, and you swim alongside them in the warm Indian Ocean — one of the most joyful wildlife experiences in East Africa. In the afternoon, the beach: white sand, turquoise water, and the warm Zanzibar sun. An optional dhow sunset cruise on the Indian Ocean closes the day — traditional wooden sailboat, cold drinks, as the sun sets over the African mainland to the west.

Common Questions

What is there to do in Zanzibar for 4 days?
Four days covers the essential Zanzibar experience beautifully. Day 1: Stone Town UNESCO tour and the old city. Day 2: Spice farm tour and Mnemba Atoll world-class snorkelling. Day 3: Dolphin swimming at Kizimkazi and a full beach day. Day 4: departure. This itinerary gives you the city, the ocean, the wildlife, and the beach — the four things that make Zanzibar one of the world's great island destinations.
What is the best time to visit Zanzibar?
Zanzibar is a year-round destination. June–September is the dry northeast monsoon — calm seas, excellent snorkelling conditions, cooler temperatures. January–March is the warmest season with the calmest Indian Ocean. October–November brings short rains but remains beautiful. December–January sees the big swell on the north coast but the east coast (Paje) is ideal. Haven Trails advises on the best timing based on your planned activities.
Is Mnemba Atoll worth it?
Yes — it is one of the genuine highlights of any Zanzibar visit. Mnemba Atoll is a protected marine reserve with exceptional coral health, extraordinary marine life diversity (green turtles, hawksbill turtles, reef sharks, octopus, moray eels), and visibility of up to 30 metres on calm days. It is widely considered one of the best snorkelling sites in the Indian Ocean. The boat trip from the north coast takes about 20 minutes.
Can I swim with dolphins?
Yes — Kizimkazi on the southwest coast of Zanzibar has resident pods of bottlenose and humpback dolphins that are almost always present in the bay. A local fishing boat takes you to where the dolphins are feeding, and you swim alongside them in warm, shallow water. It is one of the most joyful wildlife experiences available in East Africa. Haven Trails works with responsible operators who follow marine conservation guidelines.
Is Zanzibar suitable for families?
Yes — Zanzibar is an excellent family destination. The calm waters of the north coast are ideal for children, the dolphin swimming is magical for all ages, the spice farm is educational and fun, and Stone Town is fascinating for older children. Haven Trails recommends the Gold tier for families and can advise on the best property locations for families with young children.
Can I combine Zanzibar with a Tanzania safari?
Absolutely — and the combination is one of the world's great travel experiences. Haven Trails arranges seamless safari + Zanzibar packages of 10 or 12 days, with a domestic flight from Kilimanjaro Airport to Zanzibar taking 45–60 minutes. Our 10-day Grand Safari & Zanzibar and 12-day Ultimate Safari & Zanzibar pages cover the full combined experience.
