Adventure & Active Safari Experiences
Get out of the vehicle and into the landscape, with mountain biking through coffee and maize country, walking safaris across the plains, canoeing among hippos, and sunrise hot air ballooning over the Serengeti, all arranged by Haven Trails Adventures.
Safaris for Getting Out & Moving
A vehicle window is not the only way to experience Tanzania's landscapes. Adventure and active safaris put you on a mountain bike winding through coffee farms below Kilimanjaro, on foot across open plains with an armed ranger, in a canoe drifting past grazing hippos, or drifting silently above the Serengeti at sunrise in a hot air balloon. These experiences trade some of the ground-covering efficiency of a game drive for a closer, more physical connection to the environment.
Most activities suit a reasonable level of everyday fitness rather than technical athletic ability, and are led by guides trained specifically in the activity as well as in wildlife safety. Adventure elements can be built into a broader game-drive-based itinerary as day add-ons, or combined into a dedicated multi-day active safari for travellers who want movement to be the centerpiece of their trip.
How an Adventure Day Unfolds
Most active days start early, both to make use of cooler morning temperatures and because wildlife tends to be more visible before the heat of midday sets in. A safety briefing precedes every activity, covering equipment, terrain, wildlife protocol and what to do if an animal is encountered at close range, before the group sets out with a specialist guide and, for walking and biking activities, an armed ranger.
Pace is set to the group rather than to a fixed schedule, and routes are chosen for a mix of scenery, wildlife likelihood and physical interest rather than distance alone. Breaks for water, snacks and photography are built in regularly, and most activities wrap up by late morning or are scheduled again in the cooler late afternoon.
Choose Your Adventure
Activities can be booked individually as a single day out or combined into a themed multi-day active itinerary.
Guided cycling through the foothills of Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru, passing coffee and banana farms, waterfalls and rural villages along the way.
On-foot game tracking with an armed ranger and naturalist guide, reading tracks and signs in areas where walking is permitted, such as Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro's Crater Highlands.
Paddling routes at Lake Duluti, Momella Lakes and the Rufiji River, offering close, quiet encounters with hippos, waterbirds and riverine wildlife.
A pre-dawn launch over the Serengeti plains, drifting silently above wildlife at sunrise before landing to a traditional bush breakfast and champagne toast.
A walking safari that ends at a remote seasonal camp under canvas, spending the night away from permanent lodges before walking back out the next morning.
A structured itinerary combining biking, walking, canoeing and a balloon flight across a single trip, alternating activity days with classic game drives.
Best Locations for Active Safaris
Certain areas around Arusha, Moshi and the Northern Circuit are particularly well suited to specific adventure activities, thanks to terrain, wildlife density or activity infrastructure.
Rolling farmland, forest edges and quiet rural roads make this the region's premier mountain biking territory, with routes suited to beginners and experienced riders alike.
Rolling volcanic highlands above the crater rim offer multi-day walking routes through Maasai grazing land with sweeping views and few other visitors.
Calm, sheltered lake waters near Arusha and Arusha National Park make for approachable canoe outings, popular with families and first-time paddlers.
Open plains and reliable early-morning wind conditions make the Serengeti East Africa's leading destination for sunrise hot air ballooning over wildlife.
Who These Adventures Suit
Adventure activities are graded by effort so you can pick a pace that matches your fitness and comfort level.
Best Time for Active Adventures
Weather affects trail conditions, water levels and flying conditions differently depending on the activity you have in mind.
- Firm trails and dry ground make biking and walking routes most comfortable
- Clearer skies produce the most reliable balloon flying conditions
- Wildlife concentrates near water, improving sightings on walking safaris
- Cool early mornings suit longer cycling and hiking distances
- Higher lake and river levels make for a livelier canoeing experience
- Lush green scenery is at its most dramatic for biking and walking
- Fewer visitors overall allow more flexible activity scheduling
- Some balloon flights may be weather-dependent during heavier rain spells
