The Ultimate Zanzibar — 10 Days
Zanzibar is not simply a beach destination — it is one of the world's most layered and extraordinary islands. Ten days — the ultimate Zanzibar journey. Complete island exploration from Stone Town's layered history to the remote Pemba Island channel, with world-class diving, dolphin encounters, ancient forests, and six nights of pure Indian Ocean beach life.
Haven Trails has designed this 10-day itinerary to give you the most meaningful experience of the island in the time available — covering the essential highlights while leaving enough space for the unplanned moments that often become the most memorable. Every day is guided by local expertise; every property is personally vetted; every activity is booked with Zanzibar's finest operators.
Zanzibar — The Spice Island
Zanzibar is not simply a beach destination. It is one of the world's most layered and fascinating islands — a place where centuries of Arab, Persian, Indian, African, and European history have created an extraordinary cultural tapestry, where the finest coral reefs in the Indian Ocean lie minutes from white-sand shores, and where ancient forests shelter wildlife found nowhere else on Earth.
The island sits approximately 35 kilometres off the coast of mainland Tanzania in the Indian Ocean. Its position at the intersection of historic trade routes made it one of the most coveted pieces of land in the ocean world — the seat of the Omani Sultanate, the centre of the global clove trade (earning it the name the Spice Island), and for centuries one of the primary hubs of the East African slave trade. Stone Town, the island's historic capital, carries all of this history in its architecture, its food, its language, and its extraordinary atmosphere.
Beyond Stone Town, Zanzibar offers some of the most diverse island experiences available anywhere. The north coast (Nungwi and Kendwa) has the calmest, clearest water and the finest beaches. The east coast (Paje, Bwejuu, Jambiani) is wilder, windier, and world-famous for kitesurfing. The southeast and southwest coasts hold the dolphin swimming at Kizimkazi and the ancient Jozani Forest. And offshore, Mnemba Atoll provides world-class snorkelling and diving in a protected marine reserve of exceptional biodiversity.
The Best Time for Zanzibar
Zanzibar is a year-round island destination. Each season brings a different character — here is how to choose the right time for your trip.
The Itinerary
1
Arrive Zanzibar — Stone Town First Evening
Arrival at Zanzibar's Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, transfer to your Stone Town hotel. A first evening exploring the winding lanes and waterfront before tomorrow's full city day — the carved doors lit by warm evening light, the call to prayer echoing from the mosques, the seafront busy with fishermen and dhows.
2
Full Stone Town Day
A complete guided day in Stone Town — the old slave market and cathedral, the House of Wonders, the Old Fort, the Darajani market, the Freddie Mercury Museum, and the backstreet carved door walking tour. The afternoon is for independent exploration of the lanes. The evening is for the Forodhani Night Market — fresh grilled seafood over charcoal on the Indian Ocean waterfront, one of Africa's great street food experiences.
3
Spice Farm & Transfer to North Coast
A morning spice farm tour through Zanzibar's interior — the island that once produced most of the world's cloves. Fresh nutmeg, vanilla, cinnamon, lemongrass, and black pepper tasted directly from the plant. After lunch, transfer to the north coast — Nungwi or Kendwa — and the first afternoon on Zanzibar's most beautiful beach.
4
Mnemba Atoll — Day One
The first of two Mnemba Atoll days. Morning boat trip to the marine reserve with multiple snorkel sessions: coral gardens in exceptional health, green and hawksbill turtles, octopus, reef sharks, nudibranchs, and a density of tropical reef fish that makes every minute underwater eventful. Packed lunch on the water. For certified divers, guided dives can replace snorkelling sessions at any point across both Mnemba days.
5
Mnemba Atoll — Day Two & Sunset Dhow
A second Mnemba day explores different reef sites within the atoll — each one distinct, each one extraordinary. By the second day, you know the reef and start to spot familiar turtles, familiar cleaning stations, and the resident octopus in its den. Afternoon on the beach. A sunset dhow cruise to close two extraordinary ocean days.
6
Prison Island & Jozani Forest
A morning boat trip to Prison Island for time with the giant Aldabra tortoises — a colony of extraordinary, ancient animals. In the afternoon, Jozani Forest: the endangered Zanzibar red colobus monkey, found only here, moving through the ancient coral rag forest canopy overhead while the forest boardwalks lead you through one of Tanzania's most biodiverse and rare ecosystems.
7
Dolphin Swimming & East Coast Day Trip
An early morning at Kizimkazi for dolphin swimming — resident pods of bottlenose and humpback dolphins in the warm shallow bays. Then the east coast road trip: Paje's kitesurfing scene and shallow lagoon, Bwejuu's pristine long beach, Jambiani's traditional fishing village. Local seafood lunch. Return north in the evening.
8
Free Beach Day — North Coast
A full free day on the north coast. No agenda, no schedule, no plan. The white sand of Nungwi or Kendwa beach, the calm turquoise Indian Ocean, a long lunch at a beach restaurant, snorkelling off the reef at the beach's edge, a nap in the shade of the palm trees. The kind of day that only happens on islands like this one.
9
Free Day — Optional Pemba Island Excursion
The final full day — and the most open of the journey. The most adventurous option for Day 9 is an excursion to Pemba Island — Zanzibar's remote northern neighbour, far less visited and in many ways even more beautiful. Pemba is surrounded by deeper, wilder ocean, with reef walls dropping to hundreds of metres — it is considered one of the world's top drift dive destinations, and the snorkelling is also outstanding. A speedboat from Nungwi takes about 90 minutes each way. Alternatively, this is simply another gloriously free beach day — or deep sea fishing for marlin and sailfish in the channels to the south.
10
Departure Day
Final hotel breakfast. The last morning by the Indian Ocean. Ten days that have taken you from Stone Town's oldest streets to the world's finest coral reefs, from ancient tortoises to endangered monkeys, from swimming with dolphins to sleeping under Zanzibar's extraordinary sky. Transfer to Zanzibar Abeid Amani Karume International Airport for your departure flight.
