The Complete Zanzibar 6 Days
Zanzibar is not simply a beach destination it is one of the world's most layered and extraordinary islands. Six days on the Spice Island the most complete Zanzibar experience. Stone Town, Mnemba Atoll, wild dolphins, giant tortoises, red colobus monkeys, and two genuinely free beach days on the Indian Ocean.
Haven Trails has designed this 6-day itinerary to give you the most meaningful experience of the island in the time available covering the essential highlights while leaving enough space for the unplanned moments that often become the most memorable. Every day is guided by local expertise; every property is personally vetted; every activity is booked with Zanzibar's finest operators.
Zanzibar The Spice Island
Zanzibar is not simply a beach destination. It is one of the world's most layered and fascinating islands a place where centuries of Arab, Persian, Indian, African, and European history have created an extraordinary cultural tapestry, where the finest coral reefs in the Indian Ocean lie minutes from white-sand shores, and where ancient forests shelter wildlife found nowhere else on Earth.
The island sits approximately 35 kilometres off the coast of mainland Tanzania in the Indian Ocean. Its position at the intersection of historic trade routes made it one of the most coveted pieces of land in the ocean world the seat of the Omani Sultanate, the centre of the global clove trade (earning it the name the Spice Island), and for centuries one of the primary hubs of the East African slave trade. Stone Town, the island's historic capital, carries all of this history in its architecture, its food, its language, and its extraordinary atmosphere.
Beyond Stone Town, Zanzibar offers some of the most diverse island experiences available anywhere. The north coast (Nungwi and Kendwa) has the calmest, clearest water and the finest beaches. The east coast (Paje, Bwejuu, Jambiani) is wilder, windier, and world-famous for kitesurfing. The southeast and southwest coasts hold the dolphin swimming at Kizimkazi and the ancient Jozani Forest. And offshore, Mnemba Atoll provides world-class snorkelling and diving in a protected marine reserve of exceptional biodiversity.
The Best Time for Zanzibar
Zanzibar is a year-round island destination. Each season brings a different character here is how to choose the right time for your trip.
The Itinerary
1
Arrive Zanzibar Stone Town
Arrival at Zanzibar airport, transfer to your hotel, and an afternoon introduction to Stone Town UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa's most extraordinary old cities. The carved wooden doors, the winding lanes, the old slave market, the seafront: your guide brings the complex history of this island to life through its remarkable architecture and streets.
2
Spice Farm & North Coast Beaches
A morning spice farm tour through the fragrant interior cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, and pepper tasted fresh from the plant. In the afternoon, transfer to the north coast beaches (Nungwi or Kendwa) Zanzibar's finest, where the Indian Ocean is calm year-round and the snorkelling directly from the beach is excellent. Your first full afternoon on the island's most beautiful shores.
3
Mnemba Atoll Snorkelling
A full day devoted to Mnemba Atoll Zanzibar's most spectacular marine reserve, a few kilometres off the northeast coast. Multiple snorkelling sessions across different reef sites within the atoll reveal coral gardens in exceptional health, green and hawksbill turtles, octopus, reef sharks, and an extraordinary density of tropical reef fish. A packed lunch on the water. In the afternoon, a dhow sunset cruise on the Indian Ocean as the day ends.
4
Prison Island, Jozani Forest & Dolphin Swimming
A full day of Zanzibar's extraordinary wildlife. The morning visits Prison Island to walk among the giant Aldabra tortoises some over 100 years old followed by Jozani Forest, home to the endangered Zanzibar red colobus monkey found nowhere else on Earth. In the afternoon, the drive to Kizimkazi on the southwest coast, where resident dolphin pods are nearly always present and you swim alongside them in warm, shallow Indian Ocean waters.
5
Free Beach Day Pure Indian Ocean
A genuinely free day the most open day of the journey. Some guests use it for optional activities: kitesurfing on the east coast at Paje, deep sea fishing for marlin and sailfish in the southern channels, a final dive at Mnemba, or a visit to the east coast's long white-sand beaches at Bwejuu. Most guests simply choose the beach the warm Indian Ocean, a long chair in the shade of a palm tree, and the particular peace that only comes from an Indian Ocean island day with nowhere to be.
6
Departure Day
A final hotel breakfast and the last sounds of the Indian Ocean. Six days on the Spice Island its ancient city, its extraordinary ocean, its unique wildlife, and its incomparable light. Transfer to Zanzibar airport for your departure flight.
