The Serengeti is the most famous wildlife park on earth. What most first-time visitors don't realise is that it's also enormous — over 14,750 square kilometres — and that where exactly you stay within the park changes your experience dramatically. Central Serengeti and Northern Serengeti are not two versions of the same thing. They are two different safaris that happen to share a park boundary. This guide tells you which one matches your dates, budget and expectations — and when visiting both makes the most sense.
Understanding the Serengeti's Geography
The Serengeti is divided informally into four areas by most safari operators: Southern, Central, Western and Northern. For the purposes of most visitors choosing between a mainstream safari and a migration-focused experience, the key comparison is Central versus Northern. The Southern Serengeti is important for calving season (January–February) and the Western Corridor for river crossings in June, but Central and Northern are the two areas that dominate year-round booking decisions.

What Central Serengeti does better than anywhere else in the park is consistent, high-density predator viewing. The Seronera River valley, which runs through the heart of the area, provides permanent water and attracts an exceptional concentration of resident lions, leopards resting in acacia trees and hippos year-round. If seeing a leopard — the most elusive of the Big Five — is your priority, Central Serengeti gives you the best odds in the Serengeti ecosystem.
The downside is crowds. Seronera is the easiest part of the Serengeti to access and the most heavily visited. During July and August, multiple vehicles can gather around prominent sightings. For travellers seeking solitude and the feeling of wild Africa, this can be a disappointment — though an expert guide who avoids the main lodge circuit can still find quiet corners even in peak season.
Северен Serengeti (Kogatende и реката Mara)
The Mara River crossings are genuinely one of the most extraordinary wildlife events on the planet. The herds can number in the hundreds of thousands along the river bank, building for hours before the first animal plunges in. Nile crocodiles — some of the largest in Africa — wait in the water. The noise, movement, dust and raw energy of a major crossing is unlike anything else in the natural world. If you travel to Tanzania between July and October and you don't visit the north, you will always wonder what you missed.
The honest caveat: crossings are not guaranteed on any given day. The herds cross and re-cross over weeks. Some mornings at the river deliver an extraordinary crossing. Others, the animals graze on the far bank and nothing happens. This unpredictability is part of what makes witnessing a crossing so extraordinary when it occurs. Staying 3–4 nights in the north significantly improves your odds.

Централен Серенгети offers the widest range of accommodation in the entire park — from the large, government-operated Seronera Lodge and Serengeti Sopa Lodge at the mid-range end, to premium private camps such as Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, &Beyond Serengeti Under Canvas and Singita Serengeti House at the ultra-luxury end. Budget and mid-range travellers have genuine options here. Book at least 6–9 months ahead for peak season dates.
Северен Серенгети is almost exclusively the domain of luxury and ultra-luxury camps. Operators including Asilia Africa (Namiri Plains is technically central but their Sayari Camp is north), Nomad Tanzania, and One Nature Hotels operate intimate camps along the Mara River corridor. Rates during peak crossing season (July–August) can reach $1,500–$3,000+ per person per night at premium properties. Availability is extremely limited and books out 12–18 months in advance for peak dates.

The honest answer is that Central and Northern Serengeti are not in competition — they are complementary. But if you can only choose one and your budget or dates create constraints, here is the clearest possible guidance:

Technically yes, but practically we do not recommend it. The road journey from Arusha to the Kogatende area in the Northern Serengeti takes 8–10 hours in good conditions and can be significantly longer in wet season. The vast majority of visitors to the northern Serengeti fly via charter aircraft, landing at Kogatende airstrip (approximately 1.5 hours from Arusha Airport). The charter flight cost is worth the saving in time, comfort and road wear — the days you save on transit are better spent on game drives.

Yes. The Central Serengeti has a large permanent resident population of wildebeest year-round, alongside zebra, gazelle and other herbivores. What Central Serengeti does not offer is the dramatic spectacle of the million-strong migration herds that pass through the north in July–October. Between May and July, as the herds move north, very large numbers of migrating wildebeest also pass through the central Seronera area — so if your dates are June or early July, you can catch significant migration activity in the central zone before the herds reach the Mara River.
