Machame Route
The Whiskey Route. Kilimanjaro's most scenic 7-day trek with ~90% summit success rate and tent camping for experienced adventurers.
The Scenic Whiskey Route
The Machame Route is Kilimanjaro's most scenic and popular trekking path, affectionately known as the "Whiskey Route" for its challenging terrain and dramatic views. Unlike the Marangu Route's steady ascent, Machame offers tent camping and a more adventurous experience through diverse ecosystems.
What truly sets Machame apart is its superior acclimatization design with multiple high-altitude hikes that follow the "climb high, sleep low" principle, resulting in significantly higher summit success rates (85-95%) compared to other routes. The iconic Baranco Wall scramble offers thrilling views and an unforgettable experience.
The route traverses spectacular ecosystems: from dense rainforest bursting with exotic birds, through open moorlands dotted with giant lobelias and groundsels, to the stark lunar landscape of the alpine desert. You'll experience true mountain camping with dramatically changing views each day.

Route Itinerary
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins at Machame Gate (1,800m), where your Haven Trails team completes registration. Trek through lush rainforest with Colobus monkeys in the canopy. After 4-5 hours arrive at Machame Camp. Porters set up tents and prepare dinner.
The forest opens to moorland. Giant senecios appear. Kibo's summit becomes visible. Afternoon acclimatization hike to 4,000m following "climb high, sleep low" principle. Return for dinner.
Hike to Lava Tower, then descend to dramatic Barranco Valley. "Climb high, sleep low" principle improves acclimatization. Cliff walls surround camp. Rest and prepare for Baranco Wall tomorrow.
Morning highlight: the legendary Baranco Wall! A 230-meter scramble using hands and feet over volcanic rock. Thrilling but not technical. All experience levels complete it with guide support. The 360-degree views from the top are unforgettable.
After the wall, hike to Karanga Camp (4,600m). Rest, eat well. Tomorrow brings your crucial acclimatization day. A day that will significantly boost your summit success chance.
This is the critical reason the 7-day option achieves 90% summit success. Your body needs time to fully adapt to extreme altitude before the final push. Morning acclimatization hike to 4,900m+ with your guide, then return to Karanga to rest.
Lunch at camp, rest in afternoon. Evening health check with pulse oximetry. Guides assess your condition closely. Early dinner around 5 PM, sleep attempt 7-11 PM. This day makes the difference between thriving and struggling on summit night.
A short walk to Barafu Camp, your final camp. Early afternoon arrival allows complete rest, hydration, and final preparation. Barafu offers breathtaking two-peak views.
Dinner around 5 PM. Rest from 7-11 PM before the midnight summit push. Your guides will conduct final health checks and brief you thoroughly on summit night.
Summit night begins at 1-2 AM. Using headlamps and switchback paths, climb the steep scree slope to Stella Point (5,739m) on the crater rim. Your acclimatization gives you strength. Continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Africa's highest point.
Celebrate at sunrise at the roof of Africa with glaciers beside you. After photos and summit time, descend all the way to Mweka Gate. Your porters celebrate with traditional songs. Receive your official summit certificate, then transfer to your hotel for rest and celebration of your incredible achievement.
