Chemka Hot Springs — locally known as Kikuletwa — is the most magical natural swimming hole in Tanzania. Natural spring water, warmed by geothermal activity deep in Kilimanjaro's volcanic roots, emerges from the earth and fills a series of extraordinary pools of crystalline clarity. The springs are surrounded by dense riverine palm forest — a dramatic contrast to the dry plains visible just beyond the tree line. The water is warm (approximately 28–32°C), endlessly clear, and deep enough for swimming and floating. Rope swings hang from the trees above the main pool. It is a place so beautiful that most first-time visitors find it hard to believe it is real — and it is one of the least-known great natural wonders of the Kilimanjaro region.

FAQ

Common Questions

Is Chemka safe for swimming?
Yes — Chemka Hot Springs is a popular and well-established swimming destination. The water is warm, clear, and of excellent quality. The pools are safe for adults and children who can swim. Life jackets are not typically available — non-swimmers should take care in deeper areas.
How warm is the water?
The spring water emerges at approximately 28–32°C — warm enough to be comfortable for extended swimming but cool enough to be refreshing. The temperature is remarkably consistent throughout the year.
Are there facilities at Chemka?
There are basic changing facilities and toilets at the site. A small local vendor usually sells drinks and snacks. Haven Trails provides a full picnic lunch. Bring a towel, swimsuit, and sunscreen.
Can I combine Chemka with Lake Challa?
Yes — Chemka and Lake Challa are both east of Moshi in the Kilimanjaro region, making them combinable in a single active day with an early start. Haven Trails can arrange the logistics for a combined Chemka + Lake Challa day trip.
What should I bring?
Swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, water shoes (optional but useful on the rocky edges), insect repellent, and a change of dry clothes. Haven Trails provides water, picnic lunch, and transport. Bring any personal items you need.
