Chemka Hot Springs. Locally known as Kikuletwa. Is the most magical natural swimming hole in Tanzania. Natural spring water, warmed by geothermal activity deep in Kilimanjaro's volcanic roots, emerges from the earth and fills a series of extraordinary pools of crystalline clarity. The springs are surrounded by dense riverine palm forest. A dramatic contrast to the dry plains visible just beyond the tree line. The water is warm (approximately 28-32°C), endlessly clear and deep enough for swimming and floating. Rope swings hang from the trees above the main pool. It is a place so beautiful that most first-time visitors find it hard to believe it is real. And it is one of the least-known great natural wonders of the Kilimanjaro region.
Your Day-Trip Experience
After pickup from accommodation in Moshi or Arusha, guests travel across the plains below Kilimanjaro toward Kikuletwa, also widely known as Chemka Hot Springs, with the driver-guide explaining the surrounding landscape and local communities along the way. At the conservation entrance, a short walk through palms and dense greenery opens onto the clear spring-fed pools, where the day is allowed to unfold without a rigid timetable. Guests can swim, float, relax in the shade and photograph the striking contrast between turquoise water and the forest canopy; snorkelling with personal equipment and use of the rope swing are possible where current site conditions and local rules permit. The guide remains available to help the group use the area responsibly and to point out features of the spring environment, while vervet monkeys and other wildlife may occasionally be observed in the trees without any promised sighting. A picnic lunch and refreshments are enjoyed beside the springs as included in the tour, followed by additional time for swimming or quiet relaxation. When the visit is complete, guests walk back to the vehicle for the return journey to their accommodation.
