Materuni is one of the most rewarding and accessible day experiences on the slopes of Kilimanjaro — a hike through the traditional Chagga homeland to a spectacular 80-metre waterfall hidden in the lush montane forest above Moshi. The trail passes through active coffee farms, banana groves, and small Chagga villages, offering an intimate glimpse into the agricultural and cultural life of the Kilimanjaro foothills. The waterfall itself — a powerful curtain of water dropping into a cold, clear pool — is one of the most beautiful in Tanzania. After the hike, a traditional coffee tour with the Chagga community demonstrates the full process from red coffee cherry to roasted bean to freshly ground cup, ending with a coffee ceremony under the trees.

FAQ

Common Questions

How difficult is the Materuni hike?
The Materuni trail is rated moderate — approximately 3–4 km each way with a total elevation gain of about 200–300 metres over 1.5–2 hours of hiking. The trail is a well-maintained path through farmland and forest, suitable for most fitness levels. Hiking boots or sturdy trainers are recommended. The trail can be muddy after rain.
Can I swim at the waterfall?
Yes — the pool at the base of Materuni Falls is one of the great pleasures of the trip. The water is cold (fed directly from the Kilimanjaro glaciers above) but refreshing, especially after the uphill hike. Bring a swimsuit and a quick-dry towel.
What is the Chagga coffee tour?
The Chagga people of the Kilimanjaro foothills have been growing coffee for generations. The coffee tour demonstrates the full traditional process: identifying ripe red coffee cherries, hand-pulping to remove the fruit, fermenting, sun-drying, hand-roasting over an open fire in an iron pot, hand-grinding in a wooden mortar, and brewing in a traditional clay pot. You drink the final cup under the trees — one of Tanzania's most authentic cultural experiences.
Can children do the Materuni day trip?
Yes — the hike is well within the capability of children aged 8 and above. The combination of the forest hike, the swimming hole, the monkeys, and the coffee ceremony makes it an excellent family day trip. Younger children should be assessed on a case-by-case basis depending on hiking ability.
Is this combinable with a Kilimanjaro climb?
Yes — Materuni is popular as an acclimatisation and cultural day on the rest day before or after a Kilimanjaro climb. The altitude (up to 1,600 metres) is well below the main climbing elevations, making it ideal gentle introduction to Kilimanjaro's slopes.
