Materuni Waterfalls & Coffee Tour
A stunning day on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro. Hiking through Chagga villages and coffee farms to a magnificent 80-metre waterfall in a lush mountain forest, with a traditional coffee tour showing the full bean-to-cup process.
Materuni Waterfalls & Coffee Tour Day Trip
Materuni is one of the most rewarding and accessible day experiences on the slopes of Kilimanjaro. A hike through the traditional Chagga homeland to a spectacular 80-metre waterfall hidden in the lush montane forest above Moshi. The trail passes through active coffee farms, banana groves and small Chagga villages, offering an intimate glimpse into the agricultural and cultural life of the Kilimanjaro foothills. The waterfall itself. A powerful curtain of water dropping into a cold, clear pool. Is one of the most beautiful in Tanzania. After the hike, a traditional coffee tour with the Chagga community demonstrates the full process from red coffee cherry to roasted bean to freshly ground cup, ending with a coffee ceremony under the trees.
Your Day-Trip Experience
Guests are collected from their accommodation and travel to Materuni village on the fertile foothills of Kilimanjaro, where a community guide welcomes the group and introduces the Chagga farming landscape. The walk to Materuni Waterfall follows village paths through coffee and banana plots, sections of montane vegetation and the river gorge, with the guide setting a comfortable pace and explaining local agriculture, plants and daily life along the route. On reaching the tall waterfall, there is time to rest, photograph the cascade and enjoy the cool surroundings; entering the natural pool is considered only when water levels, weather and the guide's safety assessment make it appropriate. The return walk leads back into the village for a traditional Chagga lunch included in the tour, followed by a hands-on coffee experience that traces the process from ripe cherry and pulping through drying, roasting, hand-grinding and preparation of the final cup. Participation is guided by local hosts, making the visit both scenic and community based without inventing performances or guaranteed wildlife encounters. After the coffee ceremony and an opportunity for questions, guests rejoin their vehicle for the return drive to Moshi or Arusha.
