Lake Challa
A hidden volcanic crater lake on the Kenya-Tanzania border — an extraordinary turquoise jewel in the floor of an ancient caldera, surrounded by dense forest walls and accessible via a dramatic descent into the crater.
Lake Challa — Day Trip
Lake Challa is one of East Africa's most dramatically beautiful natural features — a deep volcanic crater lake sitting at the base of a 100-metre caldera on the Kenya-Tanzania border, just east of Kilimanjaro. The lake is a vivid, almost luminous turquoise, surrounded by dense forest walls that drop straight down to the water's edge. The descent into the crater takes about 45 minutes on a forest path, arriving suddenly at the water's edge with no indication of what lies below until the lake appears through the trees. The lake itself is hauntingly beautiful and completely serene — kayaking across its surface with Kilimanjaro occasionally visible above the crater rim is one of the most extraordinary experiences available as a day trip from Moshi.
