Lake Challa is one of East Africa's most dramatically beautiful natural features. A deep volcanic crater lake sitting at the base of a 100-metre caldera on the Kenya-Tanzania border, just east of Kilimanjaro. The lake is a vivid, almost luminous turquoise, surrounded by dense forest walls that drop straight down to the water's edge. The descent into the crater takes about 45 minutes on a forest path, arriving suddenly at the water's edge with no indication of what lies below until the lake appears through the trees. The lake itself is hauntingly beautiful and completely serene. Kayaking across its surface with Kilimanjaro occasionally visible above the crater rim is one of the most extraordinary experiences available as a day trip from Moshi.

Your Day-Trip Experience

Guests leave their Moshi accommodation with a driver-guide and travel east toward the Kenya border and the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro, passing farmland and rural settlements before reaching the rim of Lake Chala's volcanic crater. The first stop gives a broad view across the steep green walls to the deep blue-green water below, after which the guide leads the descent on the established forest trail, adjusting the pace to the group and current trail conditions. Along the way there are changing viewpoints, opportunities for landscape photography and the possibility of seeing monkeys or forest birds, although wildlife is never guaranteed. At the lakeshore, guests can rest, enjoy the quiet setting and, when local safety rules and conditions allow, swim or arrange kayaking through the authorised on-site provider. A packed picnic lunch is included and served in a suitable lakeside area, leaving time to appreciate the unusual cross-border crater landscape before the climb back to the rim. After regaining the upper trail and pausing for final photographs, the group rejoins the vehicle and returns through the Kilimanjaro countryside to its Moshi accommodation.

Yes. Lake Challa is safe for swimming. Despite occasional reports of crocodiles in older travel literature, the lake has a resident tilapia population and is considered safe for swimming. Haven Trails will advise on specific conditions on the day. The water is cool, clear and refreshing.
How difficult is the crater descent?
The descent takes approximately 45 minutes on a well-worn forest path. It is steep in places but manageable for most fitness levels. Good walking shoes or trainers are recommended. The ascent (returning) is more physically demanding. Allow 45-60 minutes for the climb back out.
Can I kayak on Lake Challa?
Yes. Kayaks are available on-site for rental. Paddling across the surface of the crater lake with the green caldera walls rising all around you and Kilimanjaro occasionally visible above the rim is one of the most memorable experiences available as a day trip from Moshi.
Is Lake Challa on the Kenya border?
Yes. Lake Challa straddles the Kenya-Tanzania border. The Tanzanian side is accessed from Taveta direction via the Holili border crossing area. A passport is not required for the day trip. The lake access is on the Tanzanian side.
Can I combine Lake Challa with another day trip?
Lake Challa combines well with Chemka Hot Springs for an active two-destination day in the Moshi-Kilimanjaro region. Both are east of Moshi and the two can be combined with an early start. Haven Trails can arrange the logistics.
