Safari Blue is arguably Zanzibar's most famous single-day excursion, a full day aboard a traditional dhow exploring the Menai Bay Conservation Area on the island's southwest coast. The itinerary blends multiple activities into one long, relaxed day on the water: snorkelling over coral reefs, swimming at sandbanks, exploring mangrove creeks by canoe and, if you are fortunate, spotting resident dolphins.
The day's signature moment is lunch: a full seafood feast, grilled fish, calamari, prawns, rice, salad and Swahili sides, served on a sandbank in the middle of Menai Bay, followed by fresh tropical fruit picked directly from a small onboard fruit garden.
Menai Bay Conservation Area
Menai Bay is Zanzibar's largest marine conservation area, covering a wide stretch of coastline and sea south of Fumba village. Established to protect coral reefs, seagrass beds, dolphins and dugongs, the bay's shallow, calm waters make it ideal for a mixed-activity boat day suitable for almost every traveller, including families and less confident swimmers.
Safari Blue operates from Fumba jetty using traditional wooden dhows, sailing between coral reefs, hidden sandbanks and mangrove channels over the course of the day. It has been running for decades and remains one of the most consistently well-reviewed activities in Zanzibar, thanks to its variety, relaxed pacing and the sandbank seafood lunch.

Pickup & Fumba Departure
Pickup from your hotel and transfer to Fumba village on the southwest coast, where you board a traditional wooden dhow for the day's journey into Menai Bay.

Reef Snorkelling & Dolphin Spotting
The first stop is a healthy coral reef within the conservation area for snorkelling, with the crew keeping an eye out for the resident bottlenose dolphin pods that are occasionally spotted feeding nearby.

Sandbank Seafood Feast
The dhow anchors at a private sandbank in the middle of the bay, where the crew prepares Safari Blue's famous seafood feast: grilled fish, calamari, prawns, coconut rice, Swahili salad and fresh tropical fruit, eaten with your feet in the sand.

Mangrove Creek & Return
An optional gentle canoe paddle through a mangrove creek, home to crabs, small fish and birdlife, before the dhow sails back to Fumba jetty and your transfer returns you to your hotel.
