Overview

Zanzibar's Most Legendary Boat Day

Safari Blue is arguably Zanzibar's most famous single-day excursion, a full day aboard a traditional dhow exploring the Menai Bay Conservation Area on the island's southwest coast. The itinerary blends multiple activities into one long, relaxed day on the water: snorkelling over coral reefs, swimming at sandbanks, exploring mangrove creeks by canoe and, if you are fortunate, spotting resident dolphins.

The day's signature moment is lunch: a full seafood feast, grilled fish, calamari, prawns, rice, salad and Swahili sides, served on a sandbank in the middle of Menai Bay, followed by fresh tropical fruit picked directly from a small onboard fruit garden.

Menai Bay Conservation Area

Menai Bay is Zanzibar's largest marine conservation area, covering a wide stretch of coastline and sea south of Fumba village. Established to protect coral reefs, seagrass beds, dolphins and dugongs, the bay's shallow, calm waters make it ideal for a mixed-activity boat day suitable for almost every traveller, including families and less confident swimmers.

Safari Blue operates from Fumba jetty using traditional wooden dhows, sailing between coral reefs, hidden sandbanks and mangrove channels over the course of the day. It has been running for decades and remains one of the most consistently well-reviewed activities in Zanzibar, thanks to its variety, relaxed pacing and the sandbank seafood lunch.

Your Day-Trip Experience

Guests are collected from their Zanzibar accommodation and travel to Fumba on the southwest coast, where the crew gives a marine-safety briefing before boarding a traditional-style dhow for Menai Bay. The sailing and motor route follows the day's wind, tide and sea conditions, with a snorkelling stop selected for safe access to coral and reef fish. Bottlenose dolphins may occasionally be seen in the wider conservation area, but the crew does not guarantee an encounter or pursue animals for entertainment. The dhow continues to a suitable sandbank or island setting where guests can swim, relax and enjoy the seafood feast included in the Safari Blue programme, typically accompanied by Swahili-style sides and tropical fruit as available. Throughout the excursion, the guides explain the bay's marine environment and help less-experienced snorkellers use equipment safely. If current conditions and the booked operation allow, the return route may include a gentle exploration of a mangrove creek, but this remains dependent on tide and access. After a final sail across the bay, the group disembarks at Fumba and transfers back to its accommodation, completing the day without fixed clock-time promises.

FAQ

Common Questions

Is Safari Blue suitable for non-swimmers?
Yes, most activities happen in shallow water and life jackets are provided, though confident swimmers will get the most out of the reef snorkelling sections.
How likely are we to see dolphins?
Dolphins are seen fairly regularly in Menai Bay but sightings are never guaranteed since they are wild animals moving freely through the bay; the crew will do their best to locate a pod if one is nearby.
What is included in the seafood feast?
A typical spread includes grilled reef fish, calamari, prawns, coconut rice, Swahili-style salad, chapati and fresh tropical fruit, though the exact menu can vary slightly by season and catch.
Is this the same as the standard Safari Blue tour operators offer?
Haven Trails arranges the tour with an established, licensed Safari Blue operator using the same traditional route and itinerary that has made the excursion famous, with the added benefit of Haven Trails' own guest support.
Is Safari Blue good for large groups?
Yes, the dhow format comfortably accommodates larger groups and it is a popular choice for group trips, family reunions and celebration parties on the island.
