Overview

Five Days. Three Parks. One Essential Story.

Some places call you before you arrive. The Serengeti is one of them. In five days across Tanzania's Northern Circuit, you move through three of Africa's most celebrated ecosystems — each one distinct, each one building on the last, each one impossible to forget. This is the essential Tanzania safari: concentrated, powerful, and complete.

It begins in Arusha — Tanzania's safari capital, set beneath the twin peaks of Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru. After an evening briefing and welcome dinner, the adventure shifts into gear the following morning as you drive west into the wilderness. By afternoon, you are on the Serengeti — Africa's most iconic national park and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. The name means "the land that runs on forever" in the Maasai language, and standing on those endless open plains, you understand immediately why. Two full days here give you time to go deep: the Seronera Valley predator circuit, lion prides at dawn, cheetahs hunting in the mid-morning light, and the Great Migration — that eternal cycle of 1.5 million wildebeest and 500,000 zebra following the rains.

On Day 4, the symphony shifts. You descend from the Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Crater — a UNESCO World Heritage Site formed three million years ago when a volcano the size of Kilimanjaro collapsed in on itself. The result is a self-contained Eden: 600 metres deep, 19 kilometres wide, holding 25,000 large mammals within its ancient walls. Lion prides, buffalo herds, hippos in the pools, flamingos on the soda lake, and — most remarkably — the critically endangered black rhino, one of the last reliable sightings on Earth. You overnight in the cool highland air of Karatu before one final morning at Lake Manyara — a jewel of the Rift Valley where tree-climbing lions drape themselves over mahogany branches and thousands of flamingos turn the shoreline pink, before the return transfer to Arusha and your departure.

Movement One & Two

Serengeti National Park — The Endless Plains

Africa's most iconic wilderness — where the Great Migration plays out in real time and the Big Five roam across 14,763 square kilometres of open savannah.

Two full days in the Serengeti — the longest you can stay in any single park on this circuit — mean you can go deep rather than wide. The Seronera Valley is the beating heart of predator country: lions lounging in sausage trees, leopards draped over acacias, cheetahs scanning the plains from termite mounds. The Great Migration sweeps through in a never-ending cycle, and depending on your season, you may witness calving in the south, the river crossings in the north, or simply the awe of a million animals moving across the earth.

Three million years ago, a volcano collapsed in on itself and created the Ngorongoro Caldera — a natural enclosure of extraordinary proportions. Within these ancient volcanic walls, 25,000 large mammals live in a year-round resident population, one of the highest wildlife densities per square kilometre on the continent. On a single full-day crater drive it is not unusual to see all Big Five, herds of wildebeest and zebra, multiple lion prides, flamingos on Lake Magadi — and the critically endangered black rhino, one of the last reliable sightings anywhere on Earth.

Lake Manyara is where Tanzania shows off its diversity in one compact setting. The soda lake itself dominates — a shimmering expanse that turns deep pink when the flamingos arrive in their thousands. The groundwater forest at the park's entrance is one of the most beautiful environments in Tanzania: ancient fig trees, olive woodlands, and a permanent stream where baboon families play in the cool morning air. Most famously, Manyara's lions have developed the extraordinary habit of climbing trees — resting on horizontal branches up to six metres off the ground, a behaviour found in almost no other lion population in Africa. Combined with large hippo pods, massive elephant herds moving through the fever tree forest, and over 400 bird species, Lake Manyara is the perfect final movement before departure.

When to Go

The Wild Serengeti Calling safari is excellent year-round. Each season offers a distinct experience. Below is a guide to what each period delivers across the three parks.

Jun – Oct
DRY SEASON ★ PEAK
Best overall wildlife. Thin vegetation, animals at water sources. Migration moving north toward the Mara River. Ngorongoro clear skies. Ideal for photography.
Jan – Mar
CALVING SEASON ★
Serengeti calving in the south — thousands of wildebeest calves born. Predators highly active. Short rains possible. Lush green landscapes. Flamingos peak at Manyara.
Nov – Dec
GREEN SEASON
Short rains. Lush, photogenic landscapes. Fewer tourists. Lower prices. Migrant birds arrive at Manyara. Excellent for photographers seeking dramatic skies.
Apr – May
LONG RAINS
Long rains. Roads can be muddy. Fewest tourists — very private experience. Migration moving north through the Serengeti. Dramatic stormy skies.
Haven Trails Tip: For the Great Migration river crossings, plan for July–October. For calving season drama and predator action, target January–March. For the best flamingo spectacle at Lake Manyara, October–March is peak. We track conditions in real time and position your game drives accordingly.
Safari Highlights

Moments That Will Stay With You Forever

The Great Migration River Crossing

Ten thousand wildebeest arrive at the Mara River bank in silence — then plunge in a deafening explosion of chaos, courage, and crocodiles. Nothing on Earth prepares you for witnessing it live.

Serengeti Sunrise with Lions

Pre-dawn. The plains in absolute darkness. A lion pride at a kill as the sun rises gold on the horizon. The oldest story on Earth playing out in front of you at first light.

Big Five in the Ngorongoro Crater

Descend 600 metres into Africa's most extraordinary natural arena — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and the critically endangered black rhino all in one unforgettable day.

Descending Into the Living Crater

The drive down the crater wall — 600 metres through forest, mist, and buffalo — then emerging suddenly onto the ancient floor. One of the great dramatic arrivals in all of travel.

Flamingos at Lake Manyara

Thousands of lesser and greater flamingos turn the soda lake shocking pink. Their reflections double in the still water. A colour and composition that looks almost too beautiful to be real.

Tree-Climbing Lions of Manyara

Lions resting six metres above the ground in the branches of a mahogany tree — a behaviour found almost nowhere else in Africa. One of the great wildlife oddities, seen in person.

The Serengeti at Night

At 1,500m with zero light pollution, the Serengeti sky is one of the most astonishing on Earth — the Milky Way blazing overhead, hyenas calling in the darkness, lions roaring at dawn.

Bush Picnic Under an Acacia

Your guide parks under a broad acacia, unpacks the hamper, and lays the table in the shade. A giraffe watches from 40 metres. You eat lunch inside one of the world's greatest national parks.

Arrive Arusha — The Call Begins
Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) Arusha Hotel Welcome Dinner

Your safari begins at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where your Haven Trails guide meets you at arrivals and transfers you to your Arusha hotel. The drive from the airport takes approximately 45 minutes — enough time to take your first look at the landscape and begin to understand why Tanzania feels different from the moment you land.

Arusha sits at 1,400 metres in the foothills of Mount Meru, with Kilimanjaro visible on clear mornings to the east. It is Africa's safari capital — a city of colour and energy, surrounded by coffee farms and Maasai markets, the gateway to some of the greatest wildlife on Earth. After checking in and refreshing, your guide holds a full safari briefing over welcome drinks — covering your route, the parks, what to expect, and how to get the most from every game drive. The evening ends with a welcome dinner, the first proper taste of Tanzania's warmth and hospitality.

Arusha → Serengeti — Into the Endless Plains
Arusha → Serengeti ~320 km · 5–6 hrs Afternoon Game Drive — Central Serengeti Serengeti Lodge / Camp All Meals

An early start from Arusha as the city is still waking. You drive west through the Great Rift Valley, the landscape shifting from highland coffee farms to acacia savannah as you descend. The road passes through Maasai territory — vast open rangeland where red-cloaked herders move their cattle in the early morning light, the same way their ancestors have for centuries.

You enter the Ngorongoro Conservation Area for the transit drive, passing the crater rim with its spectacular views before descending to the Serengeti plains. The moment you cross into the park proper, the transformation is immediate and total: the land opens to the horizon in every direction, the sky doubles in size, and the wildlife begins. Your afternoon game drive focuses on the central Serengeti — the Seronera Valley predator circuit, where lions and leopards are encountered with extraordinary regularity. Camp that night under a sky so full of stars it seems impossible.

Full Day Serengeti — The Wild at Full Volume
Dawn to Dusk Game Drives Serengeti Lodge / Camp (inside park) All Meals — Bush Picnic Lunch Photography Focus Day

The full Serengeti day. Alarm before sunrise, pre-dawn coffee, then out into the darkness as the plains begin to lighten — this is when the Serengeti is at its most alive and most raw. Lion prides are often at kills in the early morning, finishing a night's hunt before the heat builds. Cheetahs scan the open grasslands from termite mounds, scanning for the first opportunity of the day.

Your guide reads the land like a story — fresh tracks, birds circling, the movement of distant herds — and positions you for the best possible sightings across the full park. A bush picnic lunch is served under a broad acacia while a herd of zebra grazes nearby. The afternoon extends through the golden hour as the light transforms the grasslands to copper and amber. The Serengeti shows something new every hour of every day — it is a place you could spend a week and still not have seen everything. Tonight, two nights in, the sounds of the bush feel familiar. The hyenas calling in the dark no longer startle you. You have become part of the landscape.

Serengeti → Ngorongoro Crater — Descent Into the Caldera
Serengeti → Ngorongoro ~180 km · 3–4 hrs Full Ngorongoro Crater Floor Drive Karatu Lodge / Hotel All Meals

A morning farewell to the Serengeti — one last early drive before striking east. You leave the plains behind and begin the climb into the Ngorongoro highlands, the temperature dropping noticeably as the altitude rises. The highland road passes Maasai villages and fertile farmland, a reminder that the NCA is uniquely managed for both wildlife and its original human inhabitants.

You reach the crater rim mid-morning — and the view stops everything. Below you, 600 metres down, lies a world unto itself: a perfectly circular caldera 19 kilometres wide, mist rising from the floor in the morning cool, the dark lake of Magadi glinting pink with flamingos. You descend on the winding track, entering the forest zone and emerging suddenly onto the crater floor, where the full density of life becomes apparent. Tens of thousands of wildebeest and zebra move across the grassland. Lion prides patrol with their cubs. Elephants wade through the marsh. And somewhere on the short grass plains, the unmistakable silhouette of a black rhino. A full day inside the crater, then up the rim as the sun sets and drive to your overnight in cool, green Karatu.

Lake Manyara — The Jewel of the Rift — Departure
Lake Manyara Game Drive Manyara → Arusha ~130 km · 2 hrs Kilimanjaro Airport or Arusha Hotel Breakfast & Lunch Included

The final morning. You rise in the cool highland air of Karatu and drive the short distance to Lake Manyara National Park — a beautiful and often overlooked gem that saves the best for last. The park entrance is through a dense groundwater forest — ancient figs, massive mahogany trees, the sound of baboons and colobus monkeys overhead — before the forest gives way to the lake's edge and everything opens to the sky.

Lake Manyara is compact but extraordinarily rich. You spend the morning working the shoreline — flamingos in their thousands, hippos yawning in the shallows, massive elephant bulls drifting through the fever tree forest. The famous tree-climbing lions of Manyara are among Africa's greatest wildlife curiosities: lions that have learned to rest in the branches of mahogany trees, sometimes six metres above the ground. After your last bush picnic lunch, you drive east to Arusha, the city reappearing on the horizon as the Rift Valley escarpment falls away behind you. Your guide accompanies you to Kilimanjaro International Airport or your Arusha overnight, already asking when you plan to return. The answer is always sooner than expected.

Every Haven Trails guide holds a Professional Tourist Guide Certification and has completed a minimum of 1,000 guided field hours. Our guides don't just drive you to animals — they read the land, interpret behaviour, and make every sighting a story.

02
Custom-Fitted Safari Vehicles

Every safari departs in a custom-fitted 4x4 Land Cruiser with a 360-degree pop-up roof, forward-facing window seats, USB charging ports, stocked cooler, binoculars, and first aid kit. Maximum 6 guests per vehicle — never a crowded bus.

03
Locally Based — Real-Time Intel

Safety & Emergency Protocols

All guides carry satellite communication devices and emergency first aid supplies. We maintain evacuation protocols for every park in partnership with Flying Doctors Tanzania, and our 24/7 Moshi operations centre monitors all active safaris.

05
Fully Tailored, Never Packaged

The Wild Serengeti Calling is a framework, not a formula. Every detail is adjusted to your group — travel dates, accommodation tier, group size, pace, dietary requirements, and special interests such as photography, birding, or cultural add-ons.

06
Responsible & Community-Rooted

Haven Trails prioritises community-run lodges, Tanzanian-owned suppliers, and conservation-conscious partners. A portion of every booking supports local ranger training.

FAQ

Common Questions

What is the best time of year for this 5-day safari?
The safari is excellent year-round. June–October (dry season) delivers the best overall wildlife density — animals concentrate at water sources, vegetation is thin, and the Serengeti's Great Migration is moving north. January–March brings calving season drama in the southern Serengeti. July–October offers spectacular Mara River crossings. Lake Manyara is outstanding for flamingos October–May. Contact our team for personalised timing advice.
Will I see the Big Five?
Yes — this itinerary gives excellent Big Five chances. Two full Serengeti days deliver prime lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo sightings in the Seronera Valley. The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most reliable places on Earth for black rhino sightings. Our guides' knowledge and the extended time in each park make Big Five sightings highly likely.
What accommodation options are available?
Haven Trails offers three tiers. 🥈 Silver / Budget (from $1,690/person): budget-friendly properties and campsites with the same expert guide, 4x4, and full game drive access. ⭐ Gold / Luxury (from $2,790/person): luxury lodges and tented camps with en-suite facilities, restaurant dining, and swimming pools. 💎 Platinum / Exclusive (from $4,290/person): the finest private lodges with butler service, fine dining, spa facilities, and exclusive wildlife positioning. All tiers use the same guide, vehicle, and parks.
Is this safari suitable for families with children?
Yes — this is an excellent family safari. All wildlife viewing is from the safety and comfort of a 4x4 vehicle. We welcome children from age 5 upwards. The 5-day format is ideal for families — long enough to be truly immersive, short enough not to be exhausting for younger travellers. We recommend the Gold (Luxury) tier for families. Our guides are experienced with children and make every sighting educational and exciting.
Can I add a Zanzibar extension?
Absolutely — and it's one of our most popular combinations. After 5 days of safari, 3–5 days on Zanzibar's white-sand beaches is the perfect Tanzania experience. Haven Trails arranges seamless connections: a domestic flight from Arusha or Kilimanjaro Airport to Zanzibar takes 45–90 minutes. We handle all bookings, transfers, accommodation, and activities.
What makes Lake Manyara special?
Lake Manyara is one of Tanzania's most diverse and beautiful parks in a compact setting. It is famous for its tree-climbing lions (a behaviour found almost nowhere else in Africa), large hippo pods, and thousands of flamingos that turn the soda lake pink. The park also features a spectacular Rift Valley escarpment backdrop, dense groundwater forest teeming with primates, and over 400 bird species — a perfect final park before departure.
