Le Serengeti sauvage Calling
Five days. Three legendary parks. The Serengeti's endless plains, the living crater of Ngorongoro, and the flamingo-pink shores of Lake Manyara é the essential Tanzanie wildlife story.
Cinq jours. Trois parcs. One Essential Story.
Some places call you before you arrive. The Serengeti is one of them. In five days across Tanzanie's Northern Circuit, you move through three of Afrique's most celebrated ecosystems é each one distinct, each one building on the last, each one impossible to forget. This is the essential Tanzanie safari: concentrated, powerful, and complete.
It begins in Arusha é Tanzanie's safari capital, set beneath the twin peaks of Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru. After an evening briefing and welcome dinner, the adventure shifts into gear the following morning as you drive west into the wilderness. By afternoon, you are on the Serengeti é Afrique's most iconic national park and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. The name means "the land that runs on forever" in the Maasai language, and standing on those endless open plains, you understand immediately why. Two full days here give you time to go deep: the Seronera Valley predator circuit, lion prides at dawn, cheetahs hunting in the mid-morning light, and the Grande migration é that eternal cycle of 1.5 million wildebeest and 500,000 zebra following the rains.
Le jour 4, la symphonie change. Vous descendez du Serengeti jusqu'au Ngorongoro Crater é a UNESCO World Heritage Site formed three million years ago when a volcano the size of Kilimanjaro collapsed in on itself. The result is a self-contained Eden: 600 metres deep, 19 kilometres wide, holding 25,000 large mammals within its ancient walls. Lion prides, buffalo herds, hippos in the pools, flamingos on the soda lake, and é most remarkably é the critically endangered black rhino, one of the last reliable sightings on Earth. You overnight in the cool highland air of Karatu before one final morning at Lake Manyara é a jewel of the Rift Valley where tree-climbing lions drape themselves over mahogany branches and thousands of flamingos turn the shoreline pink, before the return transfer to Arusha and your departure.
Trois parcs. Three Worlds.
Serengeti Parc National é The Endless Plains
Afrique's most iconic wilderness é where the Grande migration plays out in real time and the Cinq grands roam across 14,763 square kilometres of open savannah.
Two full days in the Serengeti é the longest you can stay in any single park on this circuit é mean you can go deep rather than wide. The Seronera Valley is the beating heart of predator country: lions lounging in sausage trees, leopards draped over acacias, cheetahs scanning the plains from termite mounds. The Grande migration sweeps through in a never-ending cycle, and depending on your season, you may witness calving in the south, the river crossings in the north, or simply the awe of a million animals moving across the earth.
Ngorongoro Crater é The Living Caldera
The world's largest intact volcanic caldera é a self-contained ecosystem 600 metres deep and 19 kilometres wide, holding 25,000 animals within its ancient walls.
Three million years ago, a volcano collapsed in on itself and created the Ngorongoro Caldera é a natural enclosure of extraordinary proportions. Within these ancient volcanic walls, 25,000 large mammals live in a year-round resident population, one of the highest wildlife densities per square kilometre on the continent. On a single full-day crater drive it is not unusual to see all Cinq grands, herds of wildebeest and zebra, multiple lion prides, flamingos on Lake Magadi é and the critically endangered black rhino, one of the last reliable sightings anywhere on Earth.
Lake Manyara Parc National é The Jewel of the Rift
A compact, strikingly beautiful park at the foot of the Rift Valley escarpment é famous for tree-climbing lions, vast flamingo flocks, and an extraordinary diversity of habitats in a small space.
Lake Manyara is where Tanzanie shows off its diversity in one compact setting. The soda lake itself dominates é a shimmering expanse that turns deep pink when the flamingos arrive in their thousands. The groundwater forest at the park's entrance is one of the most beautiful environments in Tanzanie: ancient fig trees, olive woodlands, and a permanent stream where baboon families play in the cool morning air. Most famously, Manyara's lions have developed the extraordinary habit of climbing trees é resting on horizontal branches up to six metres off the ground, a behaviour found in almost no other lion population in Afrique. Combined with large hippo pods, massive elephant herds moving through the fever tree forest, and over 400 bird species, Lake Manyara is the perfect final movement before departure.
Quand Go
The Wild Serengeti Calling safari is excellent year-round. Each season offers a distinct experience. Below is a guide to what each period delivers across the three parks.
Des moments qui le feront Reste avec toi pour toujours
Ten thousand wildebeest arrive at the Mara River bank in silence é then plunge in a deafening explosion of chaos, courage, and crocodiles. Nothing on Earth prepares you for witnessing it live.
Avant l'aube. Les plaines dans le noir absolu. Un lion est fier d'avoir tué alors que le soleil se lève doré à l'horizon. La plus ancienne histoire sur Terre se déroule devant vous aux premières lueurs du jour.
Descend 600 metres into Afrique's most extraordinary natural arena é lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and the critically endangered black rhino all in one unforgettable day.
The drive down the crater wall é 600 metres through forest, mist, and buffalo é then emerging suddenly onto the ancient floor. One of the great dramatic arrivals in all of travel.
Des milliers de flamants roses, petits et grands, donnent au lac soda un rose éclatant. Leurs reflets doublent dans l'eau calme. Une couleur et une composition presque trop belles pour être réelles.
Lions resting six metres above the ground in the branches of a mahogany tree é a behaviour found almost nowhere else in Afrique. One of the great wildlife oddities, seen in person.
At 1,500m with zero light pollution, the Serengeti sky is one of the most astonishing on Earth é the Milky Way blazing overhead, hyenas calling in the darkness, lions roaring at dawn.
Your guide parks under a broad acacia, unpacks the hamper, and lays the table in the shade. A giraffe watches from 40 metres. You eat lunch inside one of the world's greatest national parks.
Le Itinéraire
1
Arrive Arusha é The Call Begins
Arusha sits at 1,400 metres in the foothills of Mount Meru, with Kilimanjaro visible on clear mornings to the east. It is Afrique's safari capital é a city of colour and energy, surrounded by coffee farms and Maasai markets, the gateway to some of the greatest wildlife on Earth. After checking in and refreshing, your guide holds a full safari briefing over welcome drinks é covering your route, the parks, what to expect, and how to get the most from every game drive. The evening ends with a welcome dinner, the first proper taste of Tanzanie's warmth and hospitality.
2
Arusha ? Serengeti é Into the Endless Plains
An early start from Arusha as the city is still waking. You drive west through the Great Rift Valley, the landscape shifting from highland coffee farms to acacia savannah as you descend. The road passes through Maasai territory é vast open rangeland where red-cloaked herders move their cattle in the early morning light, the same way their ancestors have for centuries.
You enter the Ngorongoro Conservation Area for the transit drive, passing the crater rim with its spectacular views before descending to the Serengeti plains. The moment you cross into the park proper, the transformation is immediate and total: the land opens to the horizon in every direction, the sky doubles in size, and the wildlife begins. Your afternoon game drive focuses on the central Serengeti é the Seronera Valley predator circuit, where lions and leopards are encountered with extraordinary regularity. Camp that night under a sky so full of stars it seems impossible.
3
Full Jour Serengeti é The Wild at Full Volume
The full Serengeti day. Alarm before sunrise, pre-dawn coffee, then out into the darkness as the plains begin to lighten é this is when the Serengeti is at its most alive and most raw. Lion prides are often at kills in the early morning, finishing a night's hunt before the heat builds. Cheetahs scan the open grasslands from termite mounds, scanning for the first opportunity of the day.
Your guide reads the land like a story é fresh tracks, birds circling, the movement of distant herds é and positions you for the best possible sightings across the full park. A bush picnic lunch is served under a broad acacia while a herd of zebra grazes nearby. The afternoon extends through the golden hour as the light transforms the grasslands to copper and amber. The Serengeti shows something new every hour of every day é it is a place you could spend a week and still not have seen everything. Tonight, two nights in, the sounds of the bush feel familiar. The hyenas calling in the dark no longer startle you. You have become part of the landscape.
4
Serengeti ? Ngorongoro Crater é Descent Into the Caldera
A morning farewell to the Serengeti é one last early drive before striking east. You leave the plains behind and begin the climb into the Ngorongoro highlands, the temperature dropping noticeably as the altitude rises. The highland road passes Maasai villages and fertile farmland, a reminder that the NCA is uniquely managed for both wildlife and its original human inhabitants.
You reach the crater rim mid-morning é and the view stops everything. Below you, 600 metres down, lies a world unto itself: a perfectly circular caldera 19 kilometres wide, mist rising from the floor in the morning cool, the dark lake of Magadi glinting pink with flamingos. You descend on the winding track, entering the forest zone and emerging suddenly onto the crater floor, where the full density of life becomes apparent. Tens of thousands of wildebeest and zebra move across the grassland. Lion prides patrol with their cubs. Elephants wade through the marsh. And somewhere on the short grass plains, the unmistakable silhouette of a black rhino. A full day inside the crater, then up the rim as the sun sets and drive to your overnight in cool, green Karatu.
5
Lake Manyara é The Jewel of the Rift é Departure
The final morning. You rise in the cool highland air of Karatu and drive the short distance to Lake Manyara Parc National é a beautiful and often overlooked gem that saves the best for last. The park entrance is through a dense groundwater forest é ancient figs, massive mahogany trees, the sound of baboons and colobus monkeys overhead é before the forest gives way to the lake's edge and everything opens to the sky.
Lake Manyara is compact but extraordinarily rich. You spend the morning working the shoreline é flamingos in their thousands, hippos yawning in the shallows, massive elephant bulls drifting through the fever tree forest. The famous tree-climbing lions of Manyara are among Afrique's greatest wildlife curiosities: lions that have learned to rest in the branches of mahogany trees, sometimes six metres above the ground. After your last bush picnic lunch, you drive east to Arusha, the city reappearing on the horizon as the Rift Valley escarpment falls away behind you. Your guide accompanies you to Kilimanjaro Aéroport International or your Arusha overnight, already asking when you plan to return. The answer is always sooner than expected.
