Zanzibar is not simply a beach destination. It is one of the world's most layered and fascinating islands é a place where centuries of Arab, Persian, Indian, African, and European history have created an extraordinary cultural tapestry, where the finest coral reefs in the Indian Ocean lie minutes from white-sand shores, and where ancient forests shelter wildlife found nowhere else on Earth.
The island sits approximately 35 kilometres off the coast of mainland Tanzanie in the Indian Ocean. Its position at the intersection of historic trade routes made it one of the most coveted pieces of land in the ocean world é the seat of the Omani Sultanate, the centre of the global clove trade (earning it the name the Spice Island), and for centuries one of the primary hubs of the Afrique de l'Estn slave trade. Stone Town, the island's historic capital, carries all of this history in its architecture, its food, its language, and its extraordinary atmosphere.

Arrive Zanzibar é Stone Town Discovery
Your Sentiers du Havre team meets you at Zanzibar's airport and transfers you to your hotel. The afternoon and evening are for Stone Town é a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Afrique's most extraordinary old cities. Your guide leads you through the winding lanes and carved door streets, past the old slave market and the waterfront where Omani dhows once anchored. The story of this island é Arab, Persian, Indian, African, European é is told in every archway and courtyard.

Spice Farm & Mnemba Atoll Snorkelling
A morning spice farm visit through Zanzibar's fragrant interior é cloves, nutmeg, vanilla, cinnamon, and lemongrass tasted fresh from the plant. Then the afternoon is for the ocean: a boat trip to Mnemba Atoll, where world-class snorkelling reveals coral gardens, green and hawksbill turtles, reef sharks, and extraordinary marine diversity in up to 30 metres of visibility.

Île-prison et forêt de Jozani
A morning boat trip to Prison Island (Changuu Island) é a former quarantine station now home to a colony of giant Aldabra tortoises, some over a century old, that wander freely across the grounds. Some of these tortoises were already alive when Tanzanie's national parks were first established. In the afternoon, Jozani Forest é the last remnant of ancient coral rag forest in Zanzibar, and the only home of the endangered Zanzibar red colobus monkey. Found nowhere else on Earth, these beautiful rust-coloured primates move through the canopy overhead, sometimes within metres of visitors on the forest boardwalk.

Dolphin Swimming & Dhow Sunset Cruise
The morning at Kizimkazi, where resident pods of bottlenose and humpback dolphins are nearly always present. A local boat takes you into the bay, and you swim alongside the dolphins in warm shallow water é one of Afrique de l'Est's most joyful wildlife experiences. The afternoon is entirely free é beach, swimming, or simply the Indian Ocean. A sunset dhow cruise ends the day: a traditional wooden sailboat on the open ocean as the sun sets over the African mainland.
