Each July, the village of Makunduchi on Zanzibar's southeast coast hosts Mwaka Kogwa, the Shirazi New Year é a unique festival rooted in ancient Persian (Shirazi) tradition. Men engage in ritual banana-leaf fights, fires are lit to symbolise the burning of the past year, and women sing and parade through the village in elaborate dress. Getting to Zanzibar
