Lake Manyara National Park is one of Tanzania's most beautiful and surprising destinations é compact, strikingly diverse, and home to wildlife behaviours found almost nowhere else on Earth. The park is famous above all for its tree-climbing lions, which rest in the branches of mahogany and acacia trees up to six metres above the ground é a behaviour documented here but found in almost no other lion population in Africa. The soda lake turns deep pink when thousands of lesser and greater flamingos arrive. Large hippo pods wallow in dark pools at the edge of the ancient groundwater forest. And over 400 bird species fill every habitat zone, making Lake Manyara one of East Africa's premier birding destinations.
