Tarangire National Park is Tanzania's most underrated wildlife destination. A landscape of ancient baobab trees, some a thousand years old, rising from golden savanna along the banks of the Tarangire River. In the dry season, elephant herds of 200-300 individuals converge daily on this river. The only permanent water source for hundreds of kilometres. And the scene of these vast gatherings beneath the ancient trees is one of the most elemental wildlife spectacles on Earth. A full day here delivers an experience most safari guests never see, because Tarangire is consistently overlooked in favour of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. That oversight is your advantage.

Your Day-Trip Experience

Guests leave their Arusha accommodation with a private driver-guide and travel across the Rift Valley countryside toward Tarangire National Park, using the journey to discuss the area's ecology and the wildlife patterns expected for the season. After park entry, the game drive moves through acacia woodland and stands of ancient baobab toward the Tarangire River and other habitats selected according to recent animal activity and road conditions. The guide looks for elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, antelopes and the park's diverse birdlife, while predators may also be encountered without any guaranteed sighting. Frequent stops allow careful observation and photography from the vehicle, and the pace can be adjusted when wildlife is active. A picnic lunch is included at an authorised site, offering a break in the landscape before exploration continues toward additional river viewpoints, woodland or the Silale area when access and time make that route practical. The safari remains a continuous experience rather than separate morning and afternoon promises, allowing the guide to make the best use of conditions on the day. After a final game-drive circuit, guests leave the park and return through the countryside to their accommodation in Arusha.

What is the best time of year for the Tarangire day trip?
June-November is peak elephant season at Tarangire. The dry season concentrates elephants at the river in extraordinary numbers. January-March is also good with lush green landscapes and excellent birding. The day trip is rewarding year-round.
Will I see elephants?
Almost certainly yes. Tarangire has one of the highest elephant densities of any park in Africa during the dry season. Even in the wet season, elephant sightings are reliable. The Tarangire River area is the best place to see large elephant herds anywhere in Tanzania.
Can children do this day trip?
Yes. All game viewing is from the vehicle, making it safe and accessible for children from age 5 upwards. Haven Trails guides are experienced with families and skilled at making every sighting engaging and educational for children.
