Formed three million years ago when a massive volcano collapsed in on itself, the Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest intact volcanic caldera — 600 metres deep and 19 kilometres wide, and the single most wildlife-productive destination in Tanzania. Inside its ancient walls, 25,000 large mammals live in permanent residency at one of the highest wildlife densities per square kilometre anywhere on the African continent. A full day on the crater floor is extraordinary — lion prides on the open grasslands, the enormous buffalo herd raising dust in the eastern sector, flamingos turning Lake Magadi pink, hippos at the Lerai Forest pools, and the critically endangered black rhino moving alone across the short grass plains. This is the finest wildlife day available as a single day trip anywhere in East Africa.

FAQ

Common Questions

How long is the drive from Arusha to Ngorongoro?
The Ngorongoro Crater rim is approximately 180 km from Arusha — a 3-hour drive through Karatu and the Ngorongoro highlands. The drive is scenic, passing through coffee farms, Maasai lands, and afromontane forest. An early 5:30 AM departure is essential to maximise time on the crater floor.
Will I see the Big Five?
The Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa's most reliable Big Five destinations. Lions, elephants, buffalo, and the critically endangered black rhino are all regularly seen in a single morning. Leopards are present in the Lerai Forest and along the crater walls. While no wildlife encounter is guaranteed, Big Five chances are higher here than almost anywhere else in Africa.
Is it cold in the crater?
The crater rim sits at approximately 2,300 metres and can be cool to cold in the early morning, especially in the dry season (June–October). The crater floor at 1,700 metres is warmer. Bring a light fleece or jacket for the early morning descent.
Can I see the Great Migration from the Ngorongoro Crater?
The Great Migration passes through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area around the crater, but does not enter the crater floor itself. The crater has its own permanent resident wildebeest population. For the Great Migration specifically, the Serengeti is the destination.
Is this the right choice for a single day trip?
The Ngorongoro Crater is consistently rated as the single best wildlife day available in Tanzania. If you only have one day, this is the day trip to choose. The wildlife density on the crater floor is unmatched anywhere in East Africa.
