Formed three million years ago when a massive volcano collapsed in on itself, the Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest intact volcanic caldera — 600 metres deep and 19 kilometres wide, and the single most wildlife-productive destination in Tanzania. Inside its ancient walls, 25,000 large mammals live in permanent residency at one of the highest wildlife densities per square kilometre anywhere on the African continent. A full day on the crater floor is extraordinary — lion prides on the open grasslands, the enormous buffalo herd raising dust in the eastern sector, flamingos turning Lake Magadi pink, hippos at the Lerai Forest pools, and the critically endangered black rhino moving alone across the short grass plains.
