Mnemba Island Snorkeling Adventure
World-class snorkelling in the protected coral gardens of Mnemba Atoll, a marine conservation area off Zanzibar's northeast coast known for exceptional reef health, turtles and visibility.
One of the Indian Ocean's Finest Reefs
Mnemba Atoll sits a few kilometres off Zanzibar's northeast coast, a small privately-managed island surrounded by a protected marine conservation area widely regarded as one of the best snorkelling and diving sites in the Indian Ocean. Coral coverage here is exceptional, and the reef supports a remarkable density of marine life within a compact, easily explored area.
Available as a half-day trip focused purely on the snorkelling, or a full-day option that adds a beach lunch and additional time in the water, this tour departs from Zanzibar's north coast, the closest access point to the atoll.
About the Mnemba Marine Reserve
Mnemba Island itself is privately leased and not open to day visitors, but the surrounding atoll and its fringing reef fall within a designated conservation area jointly managed with local communities, which has helped protect coral health here better than in many other parts of the Zanzibar archipelago.
Divers and snorkellers regularly report visibility exceeding 30 metres on calm days, alongside frequent sightings of green and hawksbill turtles, reef sharks, octopus, moray eels and a dense variety of reef fish, making it one of the most requested single-day activities for ocean-focused travellers in Zanzibar.
Your Day-Trip Experience
Guests are collected from the agreed north-coast hotel or meeting point and transferred to the departure beach, where the boat crew provides a safety briefing and checks snorkelling equipment before setting out toward the Mnemba Atoll conservation area. The guide chooses suitable reef sites according to sea conditions, visibility and local access rules, allowing guests to explore coral gardens and observe reef fish and other marine life at a comfortable pace. Sea turtles may be encountered, but they and all other wildlife remain free-ranging and are never guaranteed or chased. When conditions allow, the boat visits a second section of reef so the experience is not limited to one habitat, with time between swims to rest, hydrate and enjoy views across the Indian Ocean. Lunch or a beach break is included only for the full-day option exactly as described in the selected package; the shorter option follows its stated inclusions. On the return crossing, dolphins are sometimes seen naturally, but the crew does not promise a sighting or disrupt them for photographs. The boat returns to shore after the planned water activities, and guests are transferred safely back to their accommodation.

Why Haven Trails Adventures
Based in Moshi, Tanzania, not a booking platform abroad. Our Zanzibar partners are deeply embedded in the island's hospitality and activity networks, with real-time knowledge of the best guides, boats and conditions throughout the year.
Every guide and boat operator working with Haven Trails is licensed by the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism and personally vetted for safety, professionalism and knowledge of the island's history, culture and marine environment.
Choose a small shared group departure or book the tour privately for your party alone. Either way, you get an unhurried, personal experience rather than being herded through a crowded, oversized tour bus itinerary.
A Haven Trails ground team is reachable throughout your Zanzibar stay for any change, question or unexpected situation. You are never navigating the island alone from pickup to drop-off.
Haven Trails prioritises locally-owned operators, community guides and marine conservation partners. A portion of every booking supports coral reef protection and community tourism initiatives on the island.
No hidden extras, no last-minute upsells at the dock. What you see at booking is what you pay, with clear notes on anything genuinely excluded, such as the Zanzibar marine park conservation fee.
