Overview

Zanzibar's Calmest, Whitest Beaches

Nungwi and Kendwa sit at Zanzibar's northern tip, where the beaches face open ocean rather than the shallow tidal reef flats found along much of the rest of the coastline. This means the water here stays swimmable at every stage of the tide, unlike many east coast beaches where low tide exposes long stretches of exposed reef and seagrass.

This full-day tour introduces you to both beach towns: Nungwi with its fishing heritage, dhow-building yards and lively beachfront, and Kendwa just around the headland, known for calmer waters, wide sand and one of the best sunset spots on the island.

Nungwi & Kendwa

Nungwi, at Zanzibar's northernmost point, has long been a centre of dhow building and fishing, and its beachfront today mixes traditional wooden boatyards with a busy strip of beach bars, restaurants and hotels. A short drive or beach walk south brings you to Kendwa, generally quieter and calmer, with a long crescent of white sand that many consider the island's most beautiful beach.

Because both beaches face the open Indian Ocean rather than a shallow lagoon, the sea here remains deep enough to swim in throughout the tidal cycle, a significant advantage over the reef-flat beaches of the east coast, and it is why the north coast is consistently the most popular base for first-time visitors to the island.

Your Day-Trip Experience

Guests are collected from their Zanzibar accommodation and travel to the island's north coast, beginning in Nungwi with time to walk the beach, swim when sea conditions are suitable and observe the village's traditional dhow-building area through the guidance of a local host. The tour can include the Mnarani turtle facility only when that optional stop has been selected and is operating; the guide explains its rehabilitation context and ensures guests follow current animal-welfare rules. The drive then continues around the headland toward Kendwa for a lunch break at a beachfront restaurant, with lunch at the guest's own expense where stated in the package. The broad, often calmer beach provides space for swimming, relaxing and photography without forcing the visit into a sequence of fixed hours. If the day's conditions and return logistics align, guests may remain to watch the sun lower over the Indian Ocean, though a perfect sunset cannot be guaranteed. The guide monitors tides, weather and road conditions throughout, and after the final beach stop the private vehicle returns guests comfortably to their accommodation.

FAQ

Common Questions

What is the difference between Nungwi and Kendwa?
Nungwi is a livelier fishing and dhow-building village with a busier beachfront strip, while Kendwa, a short distance around the headland, is generally quieter with calmer, deeper water and a well-regarded sunset.
Can I swim at both beaches regardless of tide?
Yes, this is the main advantage of the north coast: both Nungwi and Kendwa face open ocean rather than a shallow lagoon, so swimming is possible at any tide, unlike much of the east coast.
Is the turtle sanctuary worth visiting?
Yes, it is a small but worthwhile stop, particularly for families, allowing a close and informative look at rescued and rehabilitating sea turtles in a natural tidal pool setting.
Do I need to bring my own beach towel?
Yes, please bring your own beach towel, sunscreen and swimwear, as these are not provided as part of the tour.
Is this tour better than the East Coast Village & Beach Tour?
The north coast suits travellers who want reliable all-day swimming and a livelier beach scene, while the east coast tour offers a quieter, more traditional village atmosphere with distinctive tidal beach landscapes.
