Arusha National Park is the closest national park to Arusha town — less than 30 minutes from the city centre — yet it contains landscapes and wildlife that rival any park in Tanzania. Mount Meru, Africa's fifth-highest peak, dominates the park from its centre, and the views of Kilimanjaro from the park (when clear) are among the best available anywhere. The Momella Lakes are a series of shallow alkaline lakes, each a different colour, all attracting large flocks of flamingos, pelicans, and wading birds. The montane forest above the lakes is home to black-and-white colobus monkeys, one of Africa's most dramatic primates. And for something truly unique: a guided canoe safari on the lakes — one of the only places in Tanzania where you can experience wildlife from the water.

FAQ

Common Questions

What makes Arusha National Park special?
It is the most accessible and affordable of Tanzania's national parks — 30 minutes from Arusha — yet it contains incredible diversity: Mount Meru, seven alkaline lakes, montane forest with colobus monkeys, open grasslands with giraffe and zebra, and the unique canoe safari on the Momella Lakes. It is perfect for guests with limited time or as a pre-safari introduction to East African wildlife.
Is the canoe safari safe?
Yes — the guided canoe safari on Big Momella Lake is operated by licensed guides following strict safety protocols. You paddle among hippos and flamingos at water level in stable two-person canoes. The experience is calm and intimate rather than adventurous — hippos are visible but the route is managed carefully. Life jackets are provided.
Can I see Kilimanjaro from Arusha National Park?
Yes — on clear mornings (typically October–February before the clouds build), the views of Kilimanjaro from the Momella Lakes area and the Ngurdoto Crater viewpoints are exceptional. Mount Meru is visible on most days.
Is Arusha NP good for families?
Yes — it is one of the best day trip options for families with young children because of the short drive, the variety of activities, the gentle pace, and the unique canoe safari experience. The colobus monkeys are particularly engaging for children.
Can I do this before or after a Kilimanjaro climb?
Yes — Arusha National Park is ideal as a gentle acclimatisation walk before a Kilimanjaro attempt, or as a relaxing nature day after descending. The shorter walking trails in the park can be arranged as an add-on.
