Overview

Zanzibar's Fragrant Heartland

Long before tourism, Zanzibar's wealth was built on spice. At its peak in the 19th century the island was the world's largest producer of cloves, and its interior remains a lush patchwork of small farms growing cinnamon, nutmeg, black pepper, cardamom, vanilla, lemongrass and dozens of tropical fruits.

This half-day tour takes you off the beach and into that green interior, where a local farmer-guide walks you through the growing plants, picking, crushing and offering leaves, bark and pods for you to smell and taste as you go, followed by a simple tasting of tropical fruit and traditional spiced tea.

Zanzibar The Spice Island

Cloves arrived in Zanzibar from the Maluku Islands in the early 19th century and transformed the island's economy almost overnight, with Sultan Said bin Sultan mandating clove cultivation across the fertile interior. By the mid-1800s Zanzibar supplied the majority of the world's cloves, and the trade shaped everything from the island's Omani ruling class to the enslaved labour forced to work the plantations.

Today small family farms around Kizimbani and Bumbwisudi continue that agricultural tradition, growing cloves alongside nutmeg, cinnamon, black pepper, cardamom, turmeric, vanilla and lemongrass in mixed, shaded plots. Your guide, often from a farming family himself, demonstrates traditional harvesting and processing methods that have changed little in generations.

Your Day-Trip Experience

Guests are collected from their Zanzibar accommodation and travel inland toward the island's agricultural heartland, where a local guide welcomes the group to a working spice farm. The walk moves through mixed plantings rather than a staged display, allowing visitors to see, touch and smell crops such as cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, black pepper, vanilla and other fruits or spices that are actually in season. The guide explains how plants are cultivated, harvested and prepared, including processes such as drying cloves, removing cinnamon bark or hand-pollinating vanilla when those activities are relevant at the time of the visit. A tasting session introduces seasonal tropical fruit and traditionally spiced tea made from available farm ingredients, with allergies or dietary concerns communicated before sampling. Local craft skills, including palm-leaf weaving, may be demonstrated as part of the established farm programme, and guests can ask questions or purchase products without pressure. Because harvests and demonstrations depend on the season, the experience follows the farm's real working rhythm instead of a fixed timeline. After the guided walk and refreshments, guests rejoin their vehicle for the return transfer to their hotel.

FAQ

Common Questions

What spices will I see and taste?
Typical farms grow cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, black pepper, cardamom, turmeric, ginger, vanilla and lemongrass, plus tropical fruit such as jackfruit, breadfruit and starfruit. Exactly what is in season varies by month.
Is the spice farm tour good for children?
Yes, it is one of the most family-friendly activities on the island: interactive, hands-on, outdoors and full of things to smell, touch and taste.
How long is the drive to the spice farm?
Most spice farms sit roughly 20-30 minutes inland from Stone Town and the west coast hotels, making this an easy half-day activity that leaves your afternoon free.
Can I buy spices to take home?
Yes. Most farms sell packaged spices, vanilla pods and coconut oil at the end of the visit, which makes for an easy, authentic souvenir, though this is optional and not included in the tour price.
Can this be combined with Stone Town?
Yes, many guests combine a morning spice farm visit with an afternoon Stone Town walking tour for a full and varied day. Ask Haven Trails about combining the two.
