Nyerere Safari & Zanzibar Beach Escape - 6 Days
Two nights deep in Nyerere National Park with a Rufiji boat safari and wild dog tracking, then three nights of Stone Town, spice and Indian Ocean beach on Zanzibar. Tanzania's wildest short escape.
Nyerere Safari & Zanzibar Beach Escape - 6 Days Southern Tanzania & Zanzibar
Six days that pair Tanzania's wildest southern wilderness with its most beautiful beaches. Two nights deep in Nyerere National Park, Africa's largest protected area, with a Rufiji River boat safari and a full day chasing wild dog, elephant and lion across its vast circuits. Then three nights in Zanzibar, where Stone Town's spice-scented lanes and the warm turquoise Indian Ocean bring the journey to a close.
Haven Trails operates the safari days in a private 4x4 Land Cruiser with a 360° pop-up roof and an expert Southern Circuit guide, with all accommodation, park fees, transfers and meals as per the itinerary included. The Nyerere-to-Zanzibar combination is one of the most complete short escapes Tanzania offers: profound wilderness followed by genuine rest.
Where You'll Go
Nyerere National Park
Africa's largest single protected area. 50,000 km² of miombo woodland, Rufiji River wetlands and remote grassland supporting Africa's greatest wild dog population, enormous elephant herds and the full Big Five. Boat safaris on the Rufiji River are a signature Nyerere activity unavailable in most East African parks.
Zanzibar (Unguja Island)
The Spice Island. Stone Town's UNESCO-listed old city, centuries-old clove and nutmeg plantations, and a coastline of white sand and warm turquoise water. Three nights here is enough for real exploration and real rest: history, culture and the beach in equal measure.
The Itinerary
1
Dar es Salaam → Nyerere Evening Boat Safari
Morning pickup from your Dar es Salaam hotel or airport at 8:00 AM for the four-hour drive south to Nyerere National Park via Kibiti, with a lunch break along the way. You arrive in the early afternoon, check in, and head straight to the river for the evening boat safari on the Rufiji.
The Rufiji at sunset is one of Africa's defining wildlife experiences: hippo pods surfacing beside the boat, crocodiles on every sandbank, fish eagles calling from the riverine trees and the miombo woodland turning gold in the evening light.
2
Full Day Nyerere Wild Dog Tracking
A full Nyerere day dedicated to the park's most remarkable wildlife. Beginning with wild dog tracking in the early morning, when packs are most active, using radio network intelligence and decades of local guiding experience.
The day's circuit covers the lake systems, open grassland, riverine forest edges and miombo woodland, each delivering different species and behaviour. Picnic lunch in the park, with a sundowner drive along the Rufiji closing the day.
3
Morning Walking Safari → Fly to Zanzibar
A final Nyerere morning begins before dawn with an armed ranger walking safari through the Selous Forest, tracking and reading the landscape at foot pace as the bush wakes around you.
Return to the lodge for breakfast, then transfer to the airstrip for the road/flight connection back to Dar es Salaam and on to Zanzibar's Abeid Amani Karume International Airport. On arrival, transfer to your beach hotel for your first evening on the Indian Ocean.
4
Zanzibar Stone Town & Spice Farm
Stone Town reveals Zanzibar's history first: a UNESCO World Heritage Site of narrow lanes, carved wooden doors, Arabic arches and Swahili balconies built at the crossroads of centuries of trade. Your guide leads you past the old slave market, the House of Wonders and the seafront where dhows once loaded with cloves.
In the afternoon, a spice farm visit through the island's fragrant interior, tasting fresh nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla and cardamom straight from the plants, before returning to the coast for your second evening by the ocean.
5
Free Day: Beach or Mnemba Snorkelling
A day entirely your own. Stay on the beach, or add an optional boat trip to Mnemba Atoll, a protected marine reserve where coral gardens, green turtles and reef fish make for exceptional snorkelling in some of the clearest water in the Indian Ocean.
Alternatively, a dolphin-swimming excursion at Kizimkazi or a sunset dhow cruise are both easily arranged. Whatever you choose, the pace is entirely yours.
6
Departure from Zanzibar
A relaxed final morning: a last swim, a last walk on the beach, breakfast overlooking the ocean. Your Haven Trails ground team transfers you to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in good time for your onward or homeward flight, six days after the journey began.
