Lake Manyara National Park
A compact, jewel-like park at the foot of the Rift Valley escarpment. Famous worldwide for its tree-climbing lions, thousands of flamingos turning the soda lake pink, large hippo pods and 400+ bird species in dense groundwater forest.
Lake Manyara National Park Day Trip
Lake Manyara National Park is one of Tanzania's most beautiful and surprising destinations. Compact, strikingly diverse and home to wildlife behaviours found almost nowhere else on Earth. The park is famous above all for its tree-climbing lions, which rest in the branches of mahogany and acacia trees up to six metres above the ground. A behaviour documented here but found in almost no other lion population in Africa. The soda lake turns deep pink when thousands of lesser and greater flamingos arrive. Large hippo pods wallow in dark pools at the edge of the ancient groundwater forest. And over 400 bird species fill every habitat zone, making Lake Manyara one of East Africa's premier birding destinations.
Your Day-Trip Experience
Guests are picked up from their Arusha accommodation and travel with a private driver-guide toward Lake Manyara National Park, crossing the Rift Valley landscape and passing local towns before reaching the park beneath the dramatic escarpment. The safari begins in the groundwater forest, where massive fig trees, streams and dense vegetation create habitat for baboons, monkeys and forest birds, then continues toward open woodland, floodplain and lake-edge areas chosen according to seasonal conditions and recent wildlife movements. The guide searches responsibly for elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebras, hippos and other animals that may be encountered, while flamingo numbers and other waterbirds vary with lake levels. Lake Manyara is also associated with tree-climbing lions, but no predator or other wildlife sighting is guaranteed. A picnic lunch is included at an authorised site with time to enjoy the scenery and review photographs before the game drive resumes. The route remains flexible so the guide can respond to animal activity, road access and the interests of the group. After a final exploration of the park, guests leave the Rift Valley and return to their Arusha hotel.
