Lake Manyara National Park is one of Tanzania's most beautiful and surprising destinations — compact, strikingly diverse, and home to wildlife behaviours found almost nowhere else on Earth. The park is famous above all for its tree-climbing lions, which rest in the branches of mahogany and acacia trees up to six metres above the ground — a behaviour documented here but found in almost no other lion population in Africa. The soda lake turns deep pink when thousands of lesser and greater flamingos arrive. Large hippo pods wallow in dark pools at the edge of the ancient groundwater forest. And over 400 bird species fill every habitat zone, making Lake Manyara one of East Africa's premier birding destinations.

FAQ

Common Questions

What are the famous tree-climbing lions of Lake Manyara?
Lake Manyara's lions have developed the unique habit of climbing trees and resting on horizontal branches up to six metres above the ground — a behaviour found in only one or two other lion populations in Africa (Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda being the other). The reason is debated: possibly for cooling, possibly to escape ground-level insects. The sight of a lion draped over a mahogany branch watching you from above is one of Tanzania's most extraordinary wildlife moments.
What is the best time to see flamingos at Lake Manyara?
Flamingo numbers at Lake Manyara are highest when the soda lake's water levels and algae conditions are right — typically October through March. During peak flamingo periods, thousands of birds can turn the lake a deep pink. Even outside these months, some flamingos are usually present.
Is Lake Manyara good for birding?
Yes — Lake Manyara is one of East Africa's best birding destinations, with over 400 species recorded in the park's diverse habitats (groundwater forest, grassland, lake shore). Notable species include the African fish eagle, various storks, pelicans, the lilac-breasted roller, and numerous flamingo and wading birds on the lake shore.
Can I combine Lake Manyara and Tarangire in one day?
The parks are 60 km apart and each deserves at least half a day of game driving. Haven Trails does not recommend cramming both into a single day — instead, consider the 2-day Tanzania Express Safari that visits Tarangire on Day 1 and Ngorongoro on Day 2, with the option of adding Lake Manyara.
How far is Lake Manyara from Arusha?
Lake Manyara gate is approximately 125 km from Arusha — a 2-hour drive passing through the Makuyuni junction and the escarpment edge. The drive is scenic and comfortable.
