Nakupenda Sandbank Private Beach Day
A full day devoted entirely to Nakupenda, the tidal sandbank of pure white sand and turquoise water south of Stone Town, with plenty of time to swim, relax and enjoy a fresh seafood BBQ.
A Full Day on Zanzibar's Famous Sandbar
Nakupenda, meaning 'I love you' in Swahili, is one of the most photographed spots in Zanzibar: a narrow tongue of brilliant white sand that appears in shallow turquoise water south of Stone Town at low tide, then vanishes again as the ocean rises around it.
Unlike the combination tours, this day is dedicated entirely to Nakupenda, giving you extended, unhurried time to swim, snorkel, sunbathe and enjoy Zanzibar's signature seafood BBQ lunch cooked fresh on the sand, with the option to book the boat privately for your group.
What Makes Nakupenda Special
Nakupenda Sandbank sits in the shallow channel between Stone Town and Menai Bay, part of a wider marine conservation area known for seagrass beds, small reef patches and calm, protected water. It only appears above the surface for a window of a few hours around low tide, which is why timing is everything for a good visit.
Because it is unpopulated and undeveloped, save for the boats and crews that visit daily, Nakupenda has an almost private-island feel despite being one of the island's best-known attractions, and it remains one of the most requested experiences for couples celebrating honeymoons and anniversaries in Zanzibar.
Your Day-Trip Experience
The guide confirms collection from the guest's Zanzibar accommodation according to the day's tide and marine conditions, then accompanies the group to Stone Town harbour for the boat journey to Nakupenda Sandbank. Views of the old city, fishing craft and the open channel form part of the crossing before the white sand emerges from the turquoise water. Once ashore, guests can swim in the warm shallows, relax, photograph the changing seascape and snorkel over nearby seagrass or reef patches where conditions and the guide's safety assessment permit. The private crew prepares the seafood barbecue included in the tour, using the agreed menu of grilled seafood and accompaniments while accommodating pre-advised dietary requirements where possible. Because the sandbank changes shape as the tide moves, the visit follows nature rather than a fixed clock, and the guide keeps the group informed about safe swimming areas and the appropriate departure point. There is time for a final swim or quiet walk before the crew clears the site responsibly and everyone boards the boat. The return crossing ends in Stone Town, followed by transfer back to the guests' accommodation.

Why Haven Trails Adventures
Based in Moshi, Tanzania, not a booking platform abroad. Our Zanzibar partners are deeply embedded in the island's hospitality and activity networks, with real-time knowledge of the best guides, boats and conditions throughout the year.
Every guide and boat operator working with Haven Trails is licensed by the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism and personally vetted for safety, professionalism and knowledge of the island's history, culture and marine environment.
Choose a small shared group departure or book the tour privately for your party alone. Either way, you get an unhurried, personal experience rather than being herded through a crowded, oversized tour bus itinerary.
A Haven Trails ground team is reachable throughout your Zanzibar stay for any change, question or unexpected situation. You are never navigating the island alone from pickup to drop-off.
Haven Trails prioritises locally-owned operators, community guides and marine conservation partners. A portion of every booking supports coral reef protection and community tourism initiatives on the island.
No hidden extras, no last-minute upsells at the dock. What you see at booking is what you pay, with clear notes on anything genuinely excluded, such as the Zanzibar marine park conservation fee.
