Safari First or Zanzibar First? How to Plan the Perfect Tanzania Trip

The order you visit Tanzania's safari parks and Zanzibar's beaches shapes your entire trip experience. Here's everything you need to know to get the sequence right.

Updated April 2026 Flights from Arusha to Zanzibar: 1hr Serengeti + Zanzibar Combo ⏱ Ideal Trip: 10–14 Days Arusha / Stone Town, Tanzania

Almost every traveller planning a Tanzania holiday asks the same question: should I do the safari first or Zanzibar first? It sounds like a small logistical detail. In reality, it changes the entire rhythm and emotional arc of your trip. Get it wrong and you can spend your first beach days counting down to the safari — or arrive on the plains too exhausted to absorb what you're seeing.

Safari First Recommended Order
~1 Hour Arusha ? Zanzibar Flight
10–14 Days Ideal Combined Trip
5–7 Days Ideal Zanzibar Stay
6–8 Days Ideal Safari Duration

Why the Order Matters More Than You Think

Tanzania's two headline experiences — the wildlife-rich savannah parks of the northern circuit and the turquoise-water paradise of Zanzibar — are radically different in feel, pace and physical demand. A Serengeti safari involves early morning game drives, dusty bush tracks, unpredictable animal sightings and a constant state of alertness. Zanzibar is the opposite: languid, warm, sea-scented and designed for deep rest.

The order you experience them in determines your emotional trajectory. Do you build toward relaxation, or toward adventure? Do you recover from jet lag on the beach or in a tent? Do you end your holiday wind-down or wide-eyed? There is no universally wrong answer — but there is a statistically better one for most travellers, and our guides have seen the difference play out hundreds of times.

The Short Answer

Do the safari first. Arrive in Arusha, head straight to the parks while your energy and anticipation are high, then fly to Zanzibar to decompress on the beach. You'll arrive at the beach genuinely needing it — and you'll enjoy it far more for having earnt it. This is the order we recommend for the vast majority of our travellers.

The Case for Safari First

Recommended for Most Travellers

Safari First — Adventure to Relaxation

Starting with the safari and ending in Zanzibar is the natural arc of a Tanzania holiday. You arrive alert, curious and energised — exactly the state of mind that maximises a wildlife experience. You leave rested, sun-kissed and deeply satisfied. The narrative flows.

Jet Lag Management
Strong Advantage
Wake-up Call 5:30 AM game drives help reset
Physical Demand Moderate — seated in vehicle
Energy Required High alertness pays off most
End of Trip Feel Relaxed, beach-recovered
Mindset & Anticipation
Strong Advantage
Holiday Build Adventure ? Rest (ideal arc)
Beach Distraction None — safari already done
Focus on Wildlife Fully present, not counting days
Departure Mood Calm, rested, fulfilled
Logistics
Straightforward
Entry Point Kilimanjaro Intl (JRO)
Onward Flight Arusha ? ZNZ (1 hr)
Exit Point Zanzibar Intl (ZNZ)
Luggage Store safari bags in Arusha

The early morning rhythm of a safari — 5:30 AM wake-up, coffee in the dark, driving into the dawn — is actually a remarkably effective antidote to long-haul jet lag. Your body, confused about time zones, finds the consistent structure helpful. By day three on the plains, most travellers have reset naturally. By the time you board the small charter flight to Zanzibar, you're genuinely tired in a healthy, sun-worn way. The beach becomes exactly what it should be: a reward.

There's also a practical storage advantage. Most operators allow you to leave a large bag in Arusha before heading into the parks, where soft-sided bags of 15kg or less are required for charter flights. You take only what you need on safari, then collect your main luggage on return to Arusha before flying south to Zanzibar.

The Case for Zanzibar First

Best for Certain Traveller Types

Zanzibar First — Recovery Before Adventure

Zanzibar first works well for specific circumstances: travellers arriving from extreme time zones (Australia, Japan, Western USA), those who know they struggle badly with jet lag, families with young children needing a gentle start, or honeymoon couples who want maximum romance before the practical rigours of the bush.

Jet Lag Recovery
Situational Advantage
Recovery Time Full beach days to adapt
Best For Australia / Far East / US West
Safari Alertness Arrive well-rested
End of Trip High on adrenaline at departure
Mindset Risk
Key Drawback
Beach Focus May be distracted by safari thoughts
Holiday Arc Rest ? Adventure (less natural)
Post-Safari No decompression time
Departure Mood Wired — often wish for more time

The risk with Zanzibar first is the mental split. Many travellers tell us they spent their first three beach days half-distracted, running through questions: Will we see lions? Which park has the best game? Did we book enough safari days? Once on the beach after the safari, those questions are answered. You can fully switch off.

That said, Zanzibar first absolutely works if your priority is arriving at the Serengeti in peak physical and mental condition. For climbers adding Kilimanjaro after a safari, or for travellers who know their bodies struggle badly with the 8–12 hour time shift from Europe, a few beach days first can make a real difference to your safari presence.

The Honeymoon Exception

Honeymooning couples often prefer Zanzibar first — the opening chapter of a new marriage feels right starting with champagne on a beach at sunset, not a 5 AM wake-up call for game drives. If romance is the priority and you plan to add Kilimanjaro after the safari, Zanzibar first can work beautifully as a three-part trip: Beach ? Safari ? Mountain.

Flights, Entry Points & Practical Logistics

The logistics of combining safari and Zanzibar are simpler than many travellers expect. Tanzania handles both experiences through different airports, with reliable scheduled and charter flights connecting them.

Route Duration Airlines Frequency Cost Approx.
Arusha (ARK) ? Zanzibar (ZNZ) 1 hr Coastal, Auric Air, Air Tanzania Daily $180–$320
Kilimanjaro (JRO) ? Zanzibar (ZNZ) 1.5 hrs Air Tanzania, Precision Air Daily $150–$280
Zanzibar (ZNZ) ? Kilimanjaro (JRO) 1.5 hrs Air Tanzania, Precision Air Daily $150–$280
Serengeti airstrip ? Arusha ? ZNZ 2.5 hrs total Charter + Coastal Aviation Daily (seasonal) $350–$600
Dar es Salaam (DAR) ? ZNZ ferry 2 hrs Azam Marine, Kilimanjaro Fast Ferry Multiple daily $35–$50
Prices approximate and subject to change. Book domestic flights through your operator for best availability. Always allow minimum 3 hours connection time at Kilimanjaro International.

One practical note on luggage: charter flights from Serengeti airstrips to Arusha have strict weight and bag limits — typically 15kg per person in a soft-sided bag, with no hard-shell suitcases. If you're flying safari-first via bush charter, you'll need to either pack light or arrange storage of your main luggage in Arusha. Most safari operators offer complimentary luggage storage in Arusha for exactly this reason.

Sample Itineraries: Both Orders

Option A — The Classic Order

Safari First: 13 Days

Arrive Kilimanjaro ? Tarangire (2 nights) ? Serengeti (3 nights) ? Ngorongoro (1 night) ? Arusha (1 night) ? fly to Zanzibar (5 nights) ? depart Zanzibar

Option B — The Recovery Order

Zanzibar First: 13 Days

Arrive Zanzibar (4 nights) ? fly to Kilimanjaro ? Arusha overnight ? Tarangire (2 nights) ? Serengeti (3 nights) ? Ngorongoro (2 nights) ? depart Kilimanjaro

Haven Trails Tip

If you're arriving from Europe with a direct or one-stop flight and have 12–14 days, the classic safari-first structure gives you the most satisfying holiday arc. If you're arriving from Australia, Asia or the West Coast of the US and have time zones of 8+ hours to bridge, consider starting with 3 nights in Zanzibar to recover before the early morning game drives begin.

Does the Season Change the Answer?

Tanzania's seasons affect both experiences differently. Understanding the overlap is important for maximising your trip across both the parks and the island.

Our Verdict: Safari First, Almost Always

After running hundreds of combined Tanzania itineraries, our consistent recommendation is: safari first, Zanzibar second. The emotional logic is sound. The logistical flow is clean. And practically every traveller who has done it this way tells us the beach felt perfectly earned by the end.

The exceptions are real: severe jet lag from the Pacific, honeymoon romance logic, or adding Kilimanjaro as a third leg after the safari. In those cases, Zanzibar first makes sense. But as a default, adventure before rest is the arc that most travellers remember most fondly.

Pro Tip: Open-Jaw Flights

Book an open-jaw international ticket — fly in to Kilimanjaro (JRO) and out from Zanzibar (ZNZ). This avoids backtracking to your entry airport and makes the safari-first flow seamlessly into your departure. Many major carriers including KLM, Ethiopian Airlines, Turkish Airlines and Qatar Airways offer this routing at no or minimal extra cost versus a return ticket.

Frequently Asked Questions

For most travellers, safari first is better. You arrive alert and energised for game drives, then unwind on the beach with the animal encounters already under your belt. The emotional arc — adventure followed by rest — is more naturally satisfying. Zanzibar first works best for travellers with extreme jet lag from long-haul routes, families with young children, or honeymoon couples prioritising romance at the start.

The most common route is a charter flight from your final Serengeti airstrip (such as Grumeti or Seronera) back to Arusha, followed by a scheduled domestic flight from Arusha Airport or Kilimanjaro International to Zanzibar. Total journey time is approximately 2.5–4 hours depending on connections. Your safari operator will handle all internal flight bookings. The journey can be done on the same day with the right timing.

For a 13–14 day trip, we recommend 6–7 days on safari (including travel days) and 5–6 nights in Zanzibar. If you have 10 days total, aim for 5 safari nights and 4 beach nights. Less than 3 nights on safari means you may not fully settle into the rhythm and risk of missing key sightings. Less than 3 nights in Zanzibar doesn't give you enough time to properly relax.

Not directly. You'll need to transit through Arusha. Charter flights from Serengeti airstrips land at Arusha Airport (ARK), from where you connect to Zanzibar via scheduled domestic carriers such as Coastal Aviation, Auric Air, or Air Tanzania. In practice this connection runs smoothly and most travellers complete the journey in a single day, arriving in Zanzibar by early afternoon after a morning final game drive.

June through October is the best window for combining both — Tanzania's main dry season delivers excellent safari conditions and clear weather on the Serengeti, while Zanzibar simultaneously enjoys its driest, sunniest months. January and February are a strong second choice, offering the short dry season in the parks and beautiful warm beach weather. Avoid April and May when both the safari parks and Zanzibar experience heavy rains.

No. Zanzibar is part of Tanzania and is covered by the standard Tanzania tourist visa or the East Africa Tourist Visa. However, you will pass through a brief immigration formality on arrival in Zanzibar, even as an internal traveller. Make sure your travel documents (passport and visa) are accessible in your hand luggage when flying from the mainland to the island.
