The Marangu-route day hike from the park gate to Mandara Hut is one of Tanzania's most rewarding day trips: 12 kilometres round trip through ancient forest, with black-and-white colobus monkeys calling in the canopy, giant heathers and Kilimanjaro impatiens flowering along the trail, and the magnificent Maundi Crater offering sweeping views of the surrounding plains and e on clear days e the gleaming ice cap far above.
