The safari opens with an arrival night in Arusha at the Gran Melia Arusha — one of the finest addresses in northern Tanzania — giving you time to settle in, freshen up, and absorb the fact that you are truly here. Day Two drives you into Tarangire National Park, where ancient baobab trees dwarf the Land Cruiser and elephant herds gather at the Tarangire River. With three consecutive Serengeti days at your disposal, your guide can explore different ecosystems and zones: the Seronera Valley's legendary predator circuits, the Grumeti River corridor, and the vast open plains where the Great Migration assembles in staggering numbers. Day Eight descends into the Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest intact collapsed caldera and a self-contained ecosystem of extraordinary wildlife density. Throughout this 9-day safari, every aspect of your experience is meticulously attended to, ensuring you can wholly immerse yourself in the natural world without distraction.
Four Wild Ecosystems. Infinite Stories.
Tarangire National Park — The Land of Baobabs & Elephant Giants
A park of towering ancient baobab trees, Africa's largest elephant concentrations and remarkable year-round wildlife density — dramatic, visually unlike anywhere else in Tanzania, and deeply rewarding from your very first game drive.
Tarangire National Park is a huge park best known for its large herds of elephants, but it is also great for lion and leopard, wonderful for bird life and offers a great variety of landscape and wildlife. The gorgeous Silale Swamp, towards the south of the park, is magnificent and almost always rich in wildlife taking advantage of this reliable water source. The park provides water not only from the swamp, but also from the Tarangire River — and during the dry season it is the primary source of water for animals from the entire area, making for fantastic, concentrated wildlife viewing.
Lake Manyara National Park — Tree-Climbing Lions & Flamingo Spectacle
The oldest and most popular sanctuary in East Africa. A diverse ecosystem ranging from the vast soda lake to the lush groundwater forest — and home to the legendary tree-climbing lions found draped along acacia branches.
Lake Manyara National Park is the oldest and most popular sanctuary in East Africa. The main habitats include the shallow soda lake itself which occupies 70% of the park's total area of 320 sq km, the groundwater forest, open grassland, acacia woodland and the Rift Valley wall. The most famous spectacle in the park is the tree-climbing lions, which are occasionally seen along branches of acacia trees. Other animals found in the park include buffalo, elephants, leopards, baboons, impalas, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, ostriches and hippos.
Popularly referred to as an ornithologist's paradise, Lake Manyara National Park contains over 400 bird species found in most savanna and river habitats in East Africa. Common water birds to be seen here are pelicans, spoonbills, Egyptian geese, hammerkops and the migratory flamingoes, which arrive in hundreds of thousands creating one of Africa's great natural sights over the soda lake.
Serengeti National Park — The Endless Plains & Great Migration
Africa's most iconic wilderness. Where the world's greatest wildlife spectacle unfolds in real time and the Big Five roam across 14,763 square kilometres of infinite open savannah.
The Serengeti is approximately the size of Switzerland. Most guests on safari visit the central Seronera area plus one other zone depending on the month: the north in the dry season for the Mara River crossings, the west during the green season for the migration herds spreading to the Grumeti River, or Ndutu in the bridge season between the short rains of November and December. The central Serengeti boasts those spectacular endless plains dotted with acacia trees and the occasional rocky kopjes.
The Serengeti is home to the Great Wildebeest Migration: the largest overland movement of mammals on Earth. Between 1.5 and 2 million wildebeest, 500,000 zebra and 250,000 Thomson's gazelle follow the rains in a continuous 800-kilometre loop. The Seronera Valley's permanent water and dense riverine vegetation draw lion prides, leopards high in sausage trees, cheetah families and hyena clans.
Ngorongoro Conservation Area — The World's Greatest Crater
A UNESCO World Heritage Site. The world's largest intact collapsed caldera and a self-contained ecosystem with its own unique population of wildlife — including the rare black rhinoceros — in a confined area of amazing variety.
The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest intact collapsed caldera (volcano) — a self-contained ecosystem with its own unique population of wildlife in a confined area of amazing variety. The crater boasts lots of lions, hyenas, fantastic birdlife, servals, Cape buffalo, zebras and gorgeous landscapes. There is also the added advantage of seeing rhinos, if you are lucky. The views from the veranda of the lodges are breathtaking especially in the morning with the early morning mist, because of the high altitude — and it can be visited at any time of the year.
When to Go
Tanzania's Exquisite 9-Day Safari is rewarding in every season. Each period offers a distinct experience across all four parks. Below is a guide to what each season delivers.
Moments That Will Stay With You Forever
Your Day 2 game drive delivers an Africa that feels ancient and raw. Tarangire's enormous elephant herds move between baobab trees that dwarf the Land Cruiser. Matriarchs lead their families with unhurried authority. The young ones tumble in the red dust. The baobab silhouettes at golden hour are among the most iconic photographs East Africa produces — a complete visual and wildlife encounter unlike anything else on the Northern Circuit.
One of the great wildlife curiosities of East Africa. Lake Manyara's lions have developed the unique habit of resting and sleeping in acacia trees — a behaviour not reliably found anywhere else in the world. Your Day 3 game drive explores the groundwater forest and open grasslands of this small but extraordinary park, searching for lions draped across branches above the forest floor. With 400 bird species including vast flamingo concentrations, Manyara rewards with beauty at every turn.
The world's largest overland migration of mammals. 1.5 to 2 million wildebeest in continuous seasonal movement across the Serengeti ecosystem. From the explosive calving season in the south to the chaotic Mara River crossings in the north — your guide positions you for the season's defining spectacle. No footage or photograph captures the sound, the dust and the sheer scale of being present inside this ancient moving river of life.
On Day 8, the Land Cruiser descends the steep rim road into the Ngorongoro Crater — the world's largest intact collapsed caldera — and enters a self-contained wildlife world unlike any other. 25,000 animals live permanently on the 264 sq km crater floor. Lions rest by the soda lake. Elephant bulls patrol the forest margin. And if you are fortunate, the critically endangered black rhinoceros can be seen grazing the open grass. The morning mist hanging over the crater from the lodge veranda is a sight of extraordinary drama.
Before sunrise on your Serengeti mornings, the lodge comes alive and the Land Cruiser rolls out into the golden early light. This is universally the best time to spot wildlife. The temperature is cool, the air crystal clear, and the animals are still very active — especially the big cats returning from a night of hunting. Lion prides, cheetahs, leopards in sausage trees — the Serengeti at first light is one of the planet's most privileged wildlife experiences.
Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge sits inside the central Serengeti — not near it, not next to it, but inside it. From your canvas suite, you hear the Serengeti: lions roaring at dawn, hyenas in the night, the rustle of something moving in the dark. And yet the beds are exceptional, the meals are remarkable, and the sunset views over the plains from your private deck are unmatched in East Africa. Luxury and wilderness are not opposing forces here — they are one.
The soda lake of Lake Manyara National Park turns pink when the flamingoes arrive in their hundreds of thousands — one of Africa's most visually astonishing natural spectacles. Pelicans, spoonbills, Egyptian geese, hammerkops and an extraordinary diversity of migratory waterbirds congregate along the shoreline. For bird enthusiasts, Lake Manyara is an ornithologist's paradise — over 400 species in a park that takes less than a full day to explore, with every habitat from forest to open lake delivering new sightings.
On the drive from Lake Manyara through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area toward the Serengeti on Day 4, your guide can arrange an authentic visit to a Maasai boma in the highlands. Meet the elders, warriors, women and children. Learn about the culture, beliefs and pastoral traditions of Tanzania's last nomadic tribe — a people who have coexisted with the wildlife of the Ngorongoro highlands for centuries. An encounter that provides profound context for everything you see in the parks.
The Itinerary
1
Arrival Day — Welcome to Tanzania · Arusha
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met by a Haven Trails Adventures representative who will transfer you to your hotel where the remainder of the day is spent at leisure. The drive from the airport winds through the outskirts of Arusha, past roadside markets piled high with fresh produce and glimpses of Kilimanjaro's snow-capped summit glowing in the late afternoon light. Tanzania is not just its wildlife — it is a country of extraordinary people, ancient culture and remarkable scenery, and the journey from the airport offers your first sense of that extraordinary fabric.
Rest in your room, enjoy a swim in the pool, or explore Arusha and the surrounding areas on one of our optional day tours — the choice is entirely yours. This arrival day is designed to give you time to decompress, orient yourself and prepare for the extraordinary days ahead. Your Haven Trails guide will be on hand for a briefing over tea or coffee if you wish to discuss the safari itinerary, wildlife priorities and what to expect across the coming eight days in four of Tanzania's most iconic parks.
2
Tarangire National Park — Full-Day Game Drive · Overnight Maramboi Tented Lodge
Today after breakfast you will drive to Tarangire National Park with lunch boxes. The drive to Tarangire National Park is about 110km and takes approximately 2 hours from Arusha. The park gate opens at 6:00 am and you will enter immediately, heading toward the Tarangire River corridor where the morning's first wildlife action is already underway.
You will have your lunch in the park — your driver guide will pick a picnic site in a beautiful, shaded location — and thereafter continue with the afternoon game drive. Parks normally open from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm and you will be at your next lodge in time for dinner. Maramboi Tented Lodge, your accommodation for the night, is a carefully selected luxury lodge situated just outside Tarangire National Park, offering spectacular views and exceptional service to complete your first full day in the bush.
3
Lake Manyara National Park — Tree-Climbing Lions & Flamingo Spectacle · Overnight Kitela Lodge
Lake Manyara National Park is the oldest and most popular sanctuary in East Africa. The main habitats include the shallow soda lake itself which occupies 70% of the park's total area of 320 sq km, the groundwater forest, open grassland, acacia woodland and the Rift Valley wall. Today you will explore this extraordinary diversity in a full-day game drive.
After your game drive you will drive up into the Ngorongoro Highlands to Kitela Lodge — a luxury property perched above the crater with remarkable views — where you will stay for two nights, perfectly positioned for both Day 4's drive through the NCA to the Serengeti and Day 8's full Ngorongoro Crater descent.
4
Ngorongoro Conservation Area → Central Serengeti National Park · Into the Endless Plains
Today after breakfast you will drive to the famous Serengeti. The drive takes about 3 to 4 hours, with game en route, driving through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This transit is no mere road connection — it is a wildlife experience in its own right, passing through one of Africa's most biologically diverse landscapes with giraffe, elephant and buffalo visible from the vehicle throughout.
You will have the option to visit a Maasai Village in the Ngorongoro Highlands, where you will meet the elders, warriors, women and children. Learn about the culture, beliefs and traditions of Tanzania's last nomadic tribe — a people who have coexisted with the wildlife of this highland landscape for centuries. This cultural encounter adds a profound layer to the wilderness experience and provides context for the landscapes you are driving through.
The Serengeti is actually enormous — approximately the size of Switzerland — so most guests on safari visit the central Seronera area plus one other area depending on the month: either the north in the dry season for the Mara River crossings, the west during the green season for the migration herds, or Ndutu in the bridge season between the short rains of November and December. The central Serengeti boasts those spectacular endless plains, dotted with acacia trees and the occasional rocky kopjes. Your afternoon game drive begins as soon as you enter the park.
5
Full-Day Central Serengeti — Early Morning Drive, Leisure & Sunset Game Drive
Before sunrise at around 6:00 am, you will leave the lodge for early morning game drives. This is generally the best time to spot wildlife, as the temperature is cool and the animals are still very active, including the big cats which will be returning from a night of hunting. Lion prides, cheetahs and leopards are at their most visible and most behaviourally interesting at first light — and the Serengeti's golden dawn light creates photographic conditions that no other time of day matches.
You will then drive back to the lodge for a leisurely breakfast followed by a pure relaxation break. The mid-morning hours at Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge are yours — spend them on your private deck watching the wildlife that moves through the area around the lodge, or simply absorbing the extraordinary fact that you are sitting inside the actual Serengeti with a cup of tea and no agenda. This is the luxury dimension of the safari: not just comfort, but time.
You will then go out for another game drive and sunset viewing over the Serengeti, and then drive back to your lodge. The golden hour across the Serengeti plains — when the light turns from white to amber to deep copper and the shadows of wildebeest and giraffe lengthen across the short grass — is one of the most visually extraordinary experiences in African travel.
6
Full-Day Central Serengeti — Exploring New Horizons & Predator Territory
Your third morning in the Serengeti begins before sunrise, once again slipping out of Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge into the cool darkness before dawn. Three days in the Serengeti is a rare luxury — it means your guide can take you beyond the familiar Seronera Valley circuits and into the broader ecosystem that most safari guests never reach. Today your game drive explores different regions of the central Serengeti, seeking out the landscapes and wildlife concentrations that vary from the areas covered in previous days.
The Serengeti's immensity means that no two game drives, even in the same zone, are ever identical. Kopje outcrops shelter prides that have not yet been seen. Seasonal drainage lines are searched for leopards resting in the afternoon shade. The open plains beyond the Seronera River — sometimes thick with wildebeest and zebra in migration, sometimes hauntingly empty and waiting — are explored with fresh eyes and unhurried attention. Your guide leverages the guide radio network to position the vehicle for the most extraordinary predator-prey interactions the park is producing today.
A picnic lunch is served in the bush, at a beautiful site chosen by your guide, before the afternoon drive continues toward the golden hour. The light across the Serengeti in the late afternoon — when everything turns amber and the shadows of kopjes and acacia trees stretch long across the short grass — is one of the most photographically extraordinary environments on Earth. Return to Kubu Kubu for dinner and an overnight immersed once more in the sounds of the Serengeti at night.
7
Full-Day Central Serengeti — Sunrise Drive, Kopje Exploration & Sunset Plains
Your fourth and final full day based inside the Serengeti begins as the previous mornings have — in near-darkness, with the African night still wrapped around the lodge and the first grey light beginning to define the horizon. By now your guide knows your wildlife priorities deeply, and today's drive is tailored around the sightings and encounters that have defined your personal Serengeti experience so far — whether that is returning to a leopard's known territory, following a cheetah coalition's range, or finding the lion pride that has been the subject of unforgettable encounters on earlier drives.
The kopje circuit — the ancient granite outcrops that punctuate the Serengeti plains — is among the most rewarding game drive routes in the ecosystem. Lions rest on the warm rock faces. Rock hyrax and agama lizards dart across the boulders. Vervet monkeys occupy the acacia trees in the shade of the largest outcrops. Nesting vultures and martial eagles survey the plains from the highest points. Each kopje is its own micro-habitat, and exploring them in detail reveals the extraordinary complexity of the Serengeti's wildlife community beyond the mega-fauna.
In the afternoon, the final sunset drive over the Serengeti plains brings this extraordinary three-night wilderness chapter to its close. The colours of the Serengeti at dusk — coral and amber and deep rose spreading across the largest sky in Africa — make for a farewell that is as visually overwhelming as it is emotionally resonant. Return to Kubu Kubu for a final dinner inside the Serengeti, with tomorrow's departure for the Ngorongoro Crater ahead.
8
Ngorongoro Conservation Area — Full Crater Descent · Overnight Kitela Lodge
Today you will drive to the stunning Ngorongoro Crater. It is a 2-hour drive from the Serengeti. This crater is the world's largest intact collapsed caldera (volcano) — a self-contained ecosystem with its own unique population of wildlife in a confined area of amazing variety. The views from the veranda of Kitela Lodge are breathtaking, especially in the morning with the early morning mist at high altitude. The crater can be visited at any time of year.
The crater boasts lots of lions, hyenas, fantastic birdlife, servals, Cape buffalo, zebras and gorgeous landscapes. There is also the added advantage of seeing rhinos — if you are fortunate. The crater floor supports an estimated 25,000 animals permanently, including the critically endangered black rhinoceros. The sheer density and variety of wildlife within the enclosed space of the crater makes Ngorongoro one of the most productive and reliable game-viewing destinations anywhere in Africa.
You will have your lunch in the crater and then continue with the game drive. In the afternoon you will ascend back to the crater rim and return to Kitela Lodge, where the views over the crater at sunset are among the most dramatic panoramas in East Africa. The evening is yours to relax, enjoy dinner on the terrace and reflect on an extraordinary day inside one of the natural wonders of the world.
END
Day 9 — Departure Day: Breakfast, Optional Village Tour & Airport Transfer
Today is your final safari day. You will enjoy breakfast at the lodge and then begin the drive to Arusha or Kilimanjaro Airport for your onward flight. Your Haven Trails guide times the departure to ensure a relaxed journey without rushing — a final drive through the landscapes you have come to love over the past nine extraordinary days.
Alternatively, after breakfast, join your guide for a village tour. You can cycle through Mto wa Mbu Village where you will experience local life and enjoy the sights and sounds of this vibrant town — one of Tanzania's most culturally diverse communities, where over 120 ethnic groups coexist. You will then ride to a traditional homestead where you will enjoy a Tanzanian meal prepared by local women. This optional experience is available at extra cost and adds a meaningful cultural dimension to the final morning of your safari.
The animals continue. The plains continue. The bush continues. You carry Tarangire, Lake Manyara, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater with you from this point forward. And that, as every returning traveller knows, makes coming back not a question of if, but of when.

Why Haven Trails Adventures
Every Haven Trails guide holds a Professional Tourist Guide Certification and has completed a minimum of 1,000 guided field hours before leading any client. Our guides don't simply drive you to animals — they read the land, interpret behaviour, share ecology, track seasonal patterns and make every sighting a story worth telling. Many guests describe their guide as the single highlight of the entire trip.
Every safari departs in a custom-fitted 4x4 Land Cruiser with a 360-degree pop-up roof for unobstructed photography, forward-facing window seats, individual USB charging ports, a stocked cooler with drinks, binoculars, a first aid kit and a radio linked to the park-wide guide network. A maximum of 6 guests per vehicle. Never a crowded bus safari.
We are based in Moshi, Tanzania — not a booking platform in London or New York. Our team is in Tarangire, Manyara, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro every week, tracking seasonal wildlife movements in real time, building direct relationships with park rangers and TANAPA wardens, and repositioning game drives based on live conditions. You benefit from intelligence that no international operator can match.
All Haven Trails guides carry satellite communication devices and emergency first aid supplies. We maintain evacuation protocols for every park on the circuit in partnership with Flying Doctors Tanzania. All clients receive emergency contact cards, and our 24/7 Moshi operations centre monitors every active safari throughout the trip.
This 9-day luxury itinerary is a framework, not a formula. Every detail is adjusted for your group: travel dates for optimal seasonal wildlife positioning, group size, pace, dietary requirements, special interests such as photography, birding or cultural experiences, and any additional combinations such as a Zanzibar beach extension or additional days in the Serengeti.
Haven Trails prioritises Tanzanian-owned suppliers, community-run support services and conservation-conscious partnerships. A portion of every booking supports local ranger training through the Kilimanjaro Conservation Fund. Travelling responsibly is not a feature — it is our operating principle.
