Most people only get to Tanzania once. That's exactly why the process behind your adventure matters as much as the adventure itself. At Haven Trails Adventures, we believe a great safari begins the moment you reach out not when you land in Arusha. This guide walks you through everything, honestly and completely.

? < 24h Response time to your enquiry
??? 321 Day itineraries available
?? Max 6 Guests per safari vehicle
?? 15+ Languages supported
? 100% Tailor-made itineraries

Why Choose Haven Trails Adventures

Haven Trails Adventures is a boutique, locally owned tour operator based in Moshi, at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. We are not a reseller. We are not an aggregator. We own and operate every vehicle, we employ and train every guide, and we build every itinerary ourselves which means you pay for the experience, not the middleman.

As a Moshi-based operator, we have unmatched access to both the Northern Circuit national parks and Mount Kilimanjaro. Our team lives in and around the destinations we guide, which gives our guests something no overseas travel agent can replicate: genuine local knowledge, honest insight, and real relationships with the camps and lodges that matter.

??
The Haven Trails Difference

Working directly with a local Tanzanian operator eliminates the 2030% margin that international resellers add to identical itineraries. Our trade relationships mean your accommodation is often the same price or cheaper than booking direct while our small-group model ensures a personalised experience that large-volume operators simply cannot deliver.

Haven Trails is also the home of four curated experiences under the Haven Travel family: Haven Trails Adventures (wildlife safaris and Kilimanjaro), Honeymoon Explorers (romantic getaways), Haven Retreats (wellness and slow travel), and Haven Drive (private transfers and road journeys). Whatever brought you to Tanzania, there is a Haven experience built for you.

The Booking Process: Step by Step

We have designed our booking journey to be transparent, unhurried, and genuinely human. Here is exactly what happens from your first message to your departure morning.

1

Your Enquiry

Reach out via our website contact form, email at info@haventrails.com, or WhatsApp at +255 713 334 154. Tell us your travel dates, group size, interests (wildlife, Kilimanjaro, honeymoon, family), and rough budget. There is no minimum spend threshold and no obligation at this stage.

2

Personalised Itinerary & Quote (within 24 hours)

We review your enquiry and build a custom, day-by-day itinerary matched to your dates, interests, and budget. You receive a fully itemised quote not a vague price range. Our proposals clearly state what is included and what is not, so you can compare honestly against other operators.

3

Refine & Confirm

We welcome questions and adjustments. Want to swap a lodge? Add a Zanzibar extension? Upgrade one night to a luxury tented camp? Our team will revise the itinerary until it is exactly right. When you are ready, you confirm by signing our booking contract a clear document covering your itinerary, inclusions, cancellation terms, and liability details.

4

Deposit Payment

A 30% deposit is required to confirm your booking and secure accommodation reservations. Deposits are accepted by bank wire transfer (preferred) or credit card (a 3% processing fee applies). You will receive a receipt and written confirmation immediately. The remaining 70% is due 60 days before your arrival.

5

Pre-Departure Briefing

In the weeks before you travel, our team sends a comprehensive pre-departure pack covering visa requirements, recommended vaccinations, packing guidance, emergency contacts, and a full logistics briefing. We are available on WhatsApp throughout this period for any questions that arise.

6

Arrival & Welcome

Your Haven Trails guide meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK) with your name on a board. From this moment, everything is handled. Your vehicle, your guide, your schedule all confirmed and running smoothly before you have found your luggage.

7

The Adventure

Tanzania unfolds. Your guide leads every game drive, every park transition, every lodge check-in. You focus entirely on being present on the lions, the landscapes, the silence, the wonder. All logistics are invisible, exactly as they should be.

8

Departure & Aftercare

We transfer you to your departure airport and stay in touch to confirm your onward journey. After you return home, our team follows up to hear about your experience. Your feedback directly shapes how we improve and most of our guests become lifelong friends of Haven Trails.

??
What to Look for in Any Safari Contract

A trustworthy operator's contract should clearly include: a day-by-day itinerary, a full list of inclusions and exclusions, the cancellation and refund policy, and liability insurance details. If any of these are missing or vague, ask before signing. Our contract covers all of these as standard.

What's Included in Your Haven Trails Package

Transparency is one of our core values. The most common safari frustration arriving to find unexpected costs should never happen when you book with us. Here is an honest breakdown of what every Haven Trails safari package covers, and what sits outside your package price.

On Tipping

Guide gratuities are not included in your package price this is standard across the entire East African safari industry. Our recommended tip for a full-day guide-driver is $1525 USD per person per day, and for camp staff, a communal pool of $510 per person per day is appreciated. Tipping is always voluntary and at your discretion.

Our Vehicles & Guides

Your guide is the single most important factor in the quality of your safari experience. This is something every veteran safari traveller will tell you and it is the reason Haven Trails invests disproportionately in guide training and vehicle quality over marketing spend.

The Safari Vehicle

We operate custom-fitted Toyota Land Cruisers the industry benchmark for East African safari game viewing. Key specifications you will experience on every Haven Trails drive:

  • Pop-top roof for 360-degree, unobstructed photography and game viewing from a standing position
  • Guaranteed window seats every passenger has a direct, unobstructed view regardless of seat position
  • Maximum 6 guests per vehicle never crammed, never compromised on the experience
  • Full servicing before every trip, first-aid kit on board, and communication equipment for park radio networks
  • Charging ports (12V and USB) to keep cameras and devices powered throughout the day
  • Cool box stocked with chilled water and soft drinks for all-day drives

Your Guide

All Haven Trails guides hold official Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) guide certifications, are fluent in English, and have completed first-aid training. Our senior guides carry over a decade of field experience in the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, and Kilimanjaro ecosystems. What distinguishes a great guide from a merely competent one is not just animal-spotting ability it is the capacity to interpret what you are seeing: the predator-prey dynamics, the seasonal ecology, the social structures of elephant herds and lion prides. That interpretive layer is what transforms a game drive into education that stays with you for life.

??
Guide Radio Networks

Inside Tanzania's national parks, guides communicate via radio networks to share real-time animal sightings. When a leopard is spotted in a fever tree or a cheetah makes a kill, the information travels instantly. Booking with an experienced, park-connected guide means you are always positioned at the right place at the right time something no self-drive safari can replicate.

A Typical Day on Safari with Haven Trails

Every day on safari is different that is the point. But safari days follow a beautiful rhythm that balances the thrill of the drive with the restoration of rest. Here is what a full safari day looks like, from the moment the bush coffee arrives to the last sounds of the night.

??
A Day on Safari

The Safari Rhythm

5:45 AM

Wake-up Call

Camp staff greets you with hot coffee or tea at your tent. The early start is non-negotiable this is the best hour of the entire day for wildlife. Predators are still active from the night's hunt; the air is cool and clear; the golden light is extraordinary.

6:00 AM

Morning Game Drive Begins

You are in the vehicle and moving at first light. Your guide uses park radio networks and years of experience to position you at the most active locations. Lions finishing a night's hunt. Cheetahs scanning the open plain. Elephant herds moving to the waterhole. These are the moments dawn was made for.

9:30 AM

Mid-Morning Bush Stop

A brief stop in a safe location for tea, coffee, and snacks. You stretch your legs, swap sightings stories, and your guide shares deeper context on what you have seen. Then back into the vehicle there is always more to find.

12:30 PM

Bush Lunch or Return to Camp

Depending on your location, you either return to your lodge for a hot lunch, or enjoy a packed bush lunch at a designated picnic site in the park. Freshly prepared food, wholesome salads, local flavours always far better than you expect from a box. The midday hours are quieter for wildlife as animals retreat to shade, making this an ideal time to rest, recharge cameras, and share the morning's photographs.

3:30 PM

Afternoon Game Drive Begins

The heat of the day is breaking. Animals emerge from shade to drink and graze. Predators begin their patrols. Herbivore herds gather at waterholes, creating remarkable concentrations of wildlife and the social dynamics that go with them. The afternoon light is rich and warm your best photography of the day often happens now.

Sunset

Sundowners

A classic African safari tradition: your guide finds a scenic viewpoint and you pause the drive to watch the sun descend over the savanna with a drink in hand gin and tonic being the traditional choice. The sky turns gold and rose. The sounds of the bush deepen around you. This moment, more than almost any other, is why people return to Africa again and again.

7:30 PM

Dinner Under the Stars

Back at camp after the park closes at dusk, you freshen up and gather around the fire. Dinner is served a three-course meal, often al fresco, with the sounds of the African night as your backdrop. Lion roars in the distance. Hyenas calling. The fire crackling. You will sleep better here than anywhere else on Earth.

??
Photography Note

Tanzania's parks open from around 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM earlier and later than national parks in Southern Africa. Unlike South Africa, vehicles in Tanzania's parks must remain on designated tracks except in specific private concessions. Our guides know every legal track in every park and will position your vehicle for optimal angles without disturbing the animals.

Accommodation: From Camp to Lodge

Where you sleep on safari shapes the entire emotional texture of the experience. Haven Trails works across all accommodation tiers, from well-appointed permanent tented camps to luxury lodges with infinity pools overlooking the Serengeti plains. Here is an honest overview of each level.

Tier Style Approx. Cost Best For
Budget Camping Public campsites, basic facilities $150$250/pp/day Adventure-focused travellers, solo visitors
Mid-Range Lodge Permanent lodge, en-suite rooms, daily housekeeping $300$550/pp/day First-timers, families, groups
Luxury Tented Camp Private en-suite tents, premium furnishings, intimate atmosphere $600$900/pp/day Couples, honeymooners, milestone trips
Ultra-Luxury Private bush camps, bespoke service, butler, spa $900$1,500+/pp/day Those who want the finest Tanzania has to offer
All tiers include meals, guide, vehicle, and park fees in Haven Trails pricing. Prices vary by season and park.

Most Haven Trails guests book mid-range lodge or luxury tented camp experiences. Both offer genuine comfort after a day in the bush hot showers, excellent food, and beds that feel extraordinary after a morning on the open plain. Our accommodations are strategically positioned near waterholes or prime wildlife corridors, which means the wildlife experience continues at the camp boundary long after the game drive ends.

How to Prepare: The Haven Trails Pre-Departure Checklist

A well-prepared guest has a dramatically better safari than an underprepared one. The following is the exact guidance we send to every Haven Trails booking before departure.

Do Not Skip Travel Insurance

Medical evacuation from a remote park in Tanzania can cost $20,000$100,000 USD without insurance. We strongly recommend a policy that covers emergency medical evacuation, trip cancellation, and medical expenses. Many visitors also add AMREF Flying Doctors membership for peace of mind in the most remote locations. This is not optional it is essential.

The Tanzania Triple: Safari + Kilimanjaro + Zanzibar

Haven Trails is uniquely positioned to deliver all three chapters of Tanzania's greatest journey because we are based in Moshi, exactly where all three intersect. The Tanzania Triple is one of travel's most extraordinary experiences: big game wildlife in the Serengeti, the physical achievement of Africa's highest summit, and the turquoise shores of Zanzibar to close. Here is the sequence that works best, and why.

Chapter One Days 16
Wildlife Safari: Serengeti, Ngorongoro & Tarangire

Begin with the wildlife while your energy and awe are at their peak. Three to six days across Tanzania's Northern Circuit delivers the Big Five, the Migration, and landscapes that reframe your understanding of the natural world. Your body is fresh, your mind is open, and your appetite for Africa is at its sharpest.

Chapter Two Days 713
Mount Kilimanjaro Trek (Marangu, Machame, or Lemosho Route)

From the plains to the peak. The Kilimanjaro climb is the physical centrepiece of the Tanzania Triple demanding, humbling, and ultimately triumphant. Arriving at Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa, is an experience that marks you permanently. We guide all seven official routes from our base in Moshi.

Chapter Three Days 1418
Zanzibar Beach Recovery

After the summit, your body needs rest and Zanzibar is the perfect prescription. Pristine beaches, warm turquoise water, UNESCO-listed Stone Town, and the world's finest spice markets await. A 45 day Zanzibar extension transforms the Tanzania Triple from a great trip into a complete and perfect journey.

???
Why This Order Matters

Always sequence the safari before Kilimanjaro, and Zanzibar last. The mountain demands your full physical reserves you will not enjoy the summit push if you are already fatigued. And Zanzibar's beaches are the ideal recovery after the physical toll of the climb. Doing it in reverse is the most common itinerary mistake first-time visitors make.

Frequently Asked Questions

Reach out via our website, email at info@haventrails.com, or WhatsApp at +255 713 334 154. Share your dates, group size, and interests. We respond with a personalised proposal within 24 hours no forms, no call centres, just a direct conversation with our team.
We require a 30% deposit to confirm your booking. The remaining 70% is due 60 days before your arrival. All payments receive a full receipt. Bank wire transfer is preferred; credit card payments incur a 3% processing fee.
We specialise in first-time safari guests. Our team provides a comprehensive pre-departure briefing, manages all logistics invisibly, and keeps our group sizes small so no one ever feels lost or overwhelmed. Many of our most loyal repeat guests had never been to Africa before their first Haven Trails trip.
For peak season (JulyOctober), book 912 months in advance the best camps sell out over a year ahead. For calving season (JanuaryMarch), book 46 months out. For shoulder season travel, 24 months is generally sufficient. Early booking also locks in better lodge rates.
Every Haven Trails itinerary is built from scratch around your specific dates, interests, and budget. Nothing is off-the-shelf. Want to spend more time in the Serengeti and skip Tarangire? Add a Maasai village visit? Combine a safari with Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar? All of this is standard for us simply tell us what matters most.
We use custom-fitted Toyota Land Cruisers with pop-top roofs, guaranteed window seats, a maximum of 6 guests per vehicle, charging ports, and a cool box stocked with water and drinks. All vehicles are fully serviced before each trip and carry first-aid kits.
Cancellations more than 90 days before departure forfeit the deposit only. Cancellations 6089 days out incur a 50% charge. Cancellations within 60 days are non-refundable. We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance purchased at the time of booking to protect against unforeseen cancellations.
Yes. Malaria is present year-round below 1,800m in Tanzania, including in all major safari parks. We strongly recommend consulting a travel health clinic at least 46 weeks before departure to be prescribed appropriate prophylaxis for your health profile and itinerary. Common options include Malarone, doxycycline, and mefloquine.
Absolutely. We love family safaris and design them with children's pacing and engagement in mind. We recommend private safari vehicles for families for maximum flexibility, and select child-friendly lodges with appropriate facilities. Most parks have a minimum age of 5 for game drives, though some luxury camps accept younger children we will advise based on your specific itinerary.
