Lake Duluti is Arusha's most serene natural secret à a small volcanic crater lake just 15 minutes from the city centre, fringed with dense forest and home to a resident hippo population, a spectacular array of waterbirds, and the distinctive call of African fish eagles echoing across the water. The lake is best experienced by canoe à paddling silently along the forest shoreline, watching kingfishers flash past, observing herons, egrets, and jacanas, and moving carefully around the hippos at the northern end. The forest trail that circles the lake adds a second dimension to the experience à colobus and vervet monkeys in the canopy overhead, and the extraordinary contrast of this lush green crater lake against the dry plains just beyond its rim.
