Tanzania Express Safari
Two days. Two of Africa's most iconic parks. Tarangire's ancient elephant kingdom and baobab wilderness on Day 1. Then the Big Five inside the world's greatest natural caldera on Day 2. The perfect Tanzania stopover or weekend escape.
Dois dias. Dois Parques. Uma vida inteira de memórias.
Not every traveller has a week. Sometimes you have two days. A long layover, a gap between a Kilimanjaro climb and your flight home, a long weekend or simply a determination to experience something extraordinary before time runs out. The Tanzania Express Safari is designed for exactly that: two days, two of the finest national parks on the African continent and a wildlife experience that will be with you for the rest of your life.
O primeiro dia é Parque Nacional Tarangire. Tanzania's most underrated wildlife destination and one of Africa's best-kept secrets. Tarangire has something that no other park in northern Tanzania possesses in quite the same combination: ancient baobab trees, some a thousand years old, rising from golden savanna along the banks of the Tarangire River, while elephant herds of 200-300 individuals converge daily on the water. There is no scene quite like it anywhere in Africa. The sheer scale of these elephant gatherings. Matriarchs guiding their herds down to the sandy riverbed, calves playing in the shallows, bulls sparring on the banks. Is overwhelming in the best possible way. Add the lions in the riverine shade, the giraffe feeding unhurried from the acacia canopy, the extraordinary birdlife filling every tree and a bush picnic lunch under a fig tree and Day 1 alone justifies the entire journey.
O segundo dia é o Ngorongoro Crater. The world's largest intact volcanic caldera and the single most wildlife-productive day available anywhere in Tanzania. Formed three million years ago when a volcano the size of Kilimanjaro collapsed in on itself, the crater is 600 metres deep and 19 kilometres wide, holding 25,000 large mammals in permanent residency. A full descent of the crater floor is an extraordinary experience: lion prides on the open grasslands, the dark mass of buffalo thousands strong, flamingos turning Lake Magadi pink, hippos at the Lerai Forest pools and the critically endangered black rhino. One of only ~26 remaining on the crater floor. Moving slowly across the short grass plains. After the crater, the drive back to Arusha and your departure transfer. Two days. Two parks. Done right.
Dois Parques. Two Worlds.
Tarangire National Park The Elephant Kingdom
Tanzania's magnificent baobab wilderness and one of Africa's great secrets. The park with the highest elephant density per square kilometre during the dry season.
In the dry season, elephant herds of 200-300 converge daily on the Tarangire River beneath ancient baobab trees. Some over a thousand years old. This is one of Africa's most concentrated and overwhelming wildlife spectacles. Tarangire also holds rare dry-country species found almost nowhere else in northern Tanzania: the fringe-eared oryx and the long-necked gerenuk, alongside exceptional predator populations and over 550 bird species.
Ngorongoro Crater The Living Caldera
The world's largest intact volcanic caldera. 600 metres deep, 19 kilometres wide and home to 25,000 large mammals in permanent residency. Africa's most wildlife-dense single day destination.
Three million years ago a vast volcano collapsed and created a self-contained Eden of unmatched wildlife density. Inside its walls, all Big Five live in permanent residency. And unlike most African parks, you are virtually guaranteed extraordinary sightings in a single day. The critically endangered black rhino (~26 remaining on the crater floor) is one of the most moving wildlife encounters left on Earth. Flamingos turn Lake Magadi pink. The buffalo herd numbers in the thousands. Lion prides hunt in full view on the open plains. This is the finest single day of wildlife available anywhere in Tanzania.
Dois dias que vão Fique com você para sempre
Hundreds of elephants converging on the river beneath 1,000-year-old baobabs. Calves in the shallows, matriarchs guiding family herds, bulls sparring on the sandy banks. One of Africa's most elemental and overwhelming wildlife spectacles.
Tarangire's baobab trees at sunset. Some over a thousand years old, silhouetted against a burning orange sky with elephants moving between their massive trunks. A landscape that belongs to a different, older world.
The drive down 600 metres of crater wall through forest and morning mist. Then emerging suddenly onto the ancient floor with 25,000 animals spread before you. One of the great dramatic arrivals in all of travel.
The critically endangered black rhino. One of only ~26 remaining on the Ngorongoro crater floor. Moving alone across the short grass plains. One of the most profound wildlife encounters remaining anywhere in Africa.
O Itinerário
1
Arusha? Tarangire Into the Elephant Kingdom
An early departure from Arusha. Your Haven Trails guide collects you from your hotel before 7am and you drive south and west toward the Rift Valley. As the city falls away and the landscape opens to golden savanna and distant escarpments, the transition into the wild is immediate. The first ancient baobab trees appear on the horizon as you approach Tarangire's gate. Vast, ancient, otherworldly. And then you are inside the park.
The Tarangire River circuit begins immediately and the game drives are unlike anything in northern Tanzania. Elephant herds. Family groups of 30, 50, sometimes 100 individuals. Move in long processions across the golden grassland toward the sandy riverbed, where the water draws them daily. The spectacle at the river is extraordinary: hundreds of elephants of all ages drinking, bathing, sparring and socialising in the open, all beneath the backdrop of the ancient baobabs. Your guide positions the vehicle patiently, engine off and simply lets the scene unfold. Lions rest in the deep shade of the riverine acacias. Giraffe feed from the upper canopy in slow, meditative motion. Clouds of red-billed queleas rise and fall like smoke over the tree line. A bush picnic lunch under a fig tree at the river's edge. More game driving through the baobab woodland in the long golden afternoon. Then, as the light begins to turn orange, the drive south and west to Karatu. A cool, lush highland town at the foot of the Ngorongoro Escarpment, where you spend the one night of the safari in preparation for tomorrow's crater descent.
2
Ngorongoro Crater Full Descent Departure
Before dawn, you leave Karatu and drive the short distance to the Ngorongoro crater rim. As the first light of morning begins to reveal what lies below, everything stops. Six hundred metres down, a perfectly circular caldera 19 kilometres wide stretches in every direction. The dark pool of Lake Magadi glints pink with flamingos in the early light. Morning mist drifts from the crater floor as the forest on the rim walls comes alive with bird calls. Buffalo stand in the mist at the treeline. Then the descent begins. A winding track through ancient afromontane forest, dropping metre by metre toward the floor of the ancient volcano. And you emerge suddenly onto the crater grasslands.
The scale is disorienting at first. Wildebeest and zebra spread to every horizon in their thousands. A lion pride moves along the lugga, unhurried. The buffalo herd. Several thousand strong. Raises a distant cloud of red dust in the eastern sector. Your guide slows the vehicle and points to movement on the open grass: the prehistoric silhouette of a black rhino, one of only ~26 remaining on the floor of this ancient caldera, moving slowly alone across the short grass plains. One of the most profound wildlife moments in all of Africa. A full morning on the crater floor covers the lake shore, the Lerai Forest hippo pools, the Seneto Springs area and the open grassland predator circuit. A crater picnic lunch. Perhaps the finest picnic setting in the world. Then the long climb back up the crater wall and the drive back to Arusha for your departure transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport. Two days. Done beautifully.
