Tanzania Grand Safari & Zanzibar
Ten days. The complete Tanzania story. Four iconic parks. Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara. Then four nights of Indian Ocean paradise in Zanzibar. Africa's greatest safari, crowned with Africa's most beautiful island.
The Complete Tanzania Experience Wilderness & Ocean
There is a particular kind of Tanzania experience that combines everything the country has to offer. Not just the safari, not just the beach but both together in one seamless journey. Ten days that move from the raw, ancient wilderness of Africa's greatest parks to the warm, turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. The Tanzania Grand Safari & Zanzibar is that experience.
The safari section covers the complete Northern Circuit. All four iconic parks, each completely different from the others. It begins in Tarangire, onde manadas de 300 elefantes convergem sob baobás de 1.000 anos de idade ao longo do rio. Ele se move para o Serengeti for two full days on the world's greatest wildlife stage. Predator circuits in the Seronera Valley, the Simba Kopjes, migration pursuit and the extraordinary dawn light on the endless plains. Then the Ngorongoro Crater. A full descent into Africa's most wildlife-dense arena, where Big Five encounters including the critically endangered black rhino are genuinely possible in a single extraordinary day. And finally Lake Manyara, the jewel of the Rift Valley. Tree-climbing lions, thousands of flamingos and the perfect closing chapter of six safari days.
Depois, a transição que torna este itinerário verdadeiramente excepcional: um curto voo doméstico do Aeroporto de Kilimanjaro para Zanzibar. In under 90 minutes, the landscape beneath the aircraft changes from the brown-gold savanna of the Rift Valley to the turquoise shallows and white-sand shores of the Indian Ocean. Four nights in Zanzibar to decompress, explore and let the safari memories settle. Stone Town's UNESCO World Heritage labyrinth. A spice farm tour through the island that was once the world's largest clove producer. World-class snorkelling around Mnemba Atoll. Swimming with wild dolphins at Kizimkazi. The kind of sunsets that only happen at this latitude, seen from a dhow on the open ocean. Then, on Day 10, departure from Zanzibar Airport. Carrying a version of Tanzania that very few travellers ever experience in full.

O Itinerário
1
Arrive Arusha The Grand Journey Begins
Your Haven Trails guide meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfers you to your Arusha hotel. A 45-minute drive through the foothills of Mount Meru, Tanzania's second-highest mountain. Arusha is Africa's safari capital, set at 1,400 metres with Mount Kilimanjaro visible to the east on clear mornings. The city hums with the energy of a place that serves as the gateway to some of the world's greatest wildlife destinations.
After settling in, your guide holds a comprehensive briefing over welcome drinks. Covering all four parks, the Zanzibar leg, daily rhythms, what to pack each morning and how to make the most of every hour over the coming ten days. The evening concludes with a welcome dinner, your first introduction to Tanzania's warmth, its cuisine and its extraordinary sense of hospitality.
2
Arusha? Tarangire Into the Elephant Kingdom
An early breakfast and departure, driving south and west through the Rift Valley toward Tarangire. The first ancient baobabs appear on the horizon as you approach the park. Ancient, gnarled, impossibly large. And then you are inside and the Tarangire River circuit begins. This is elephant country in the truest sense: in the dry season, herds of 200-300 individuals converge daily on the river and the scene beneath the baobabs is unlike anything else in Africa.
A full day of game drives covers the river circuit and the inland baobab plains. Lions resting in the shade of the acacias, giraffe feeding in the canopy, the rare fringe-eared oryx and gerenuk unique to this ecosystem. A bush picnic lunch at the river's edge. Then as the late afternoon light turns the baobabs golden, the drive to Karatu. The cool, green highland town at the foot of the Ngorongoro highlands. For the first of two Karatu nights.
3
Karatu? Serengeti Entering the Endless Plains
Today the journey begins in earnest. The drive from Karatu climbs through the cool afromontane forest of the Ngorongoro highlands. A dramatic road with views of the crater rim and the vast conservation area beyond. Before descending westward toward the Serengeti. At the park boundary, the landscape transforms: the forest gives way to open savanna, the trees thin out and suddenly you are on the Serengeti's short grass plains with the horizon in every direction and nothing between you and it. An optional stop at Olduvai Gorge. The Cradle of Mankind. Adds a profound historical dimension to the journey.
By midday you are inside the Serengeti. The afternoon game drive begins immediately. Your guide scanning for predators along the Seronera River, checking the kopjes for resident lions and positioning the vehicle for the first encounters with the vast wildebeest and zebra herds that characterise this landscape at every season. You arrive at camp as the last light turns the plains copper, the sounds of the African night beginning around you.
4
Full Day Serengeti The Predator Circuit
The full Serengeti day. Before dawn, you are out of camp and onto the plains. The sky still dark, the air cool and sharp, the first predators still active after the night's hunting. The Seronera Valley is one of Africa's most productive predator circuits: the Seronera River, lined with ancient fig trees, is home to resident leopards that drape themselves over the horizontal branches in the early morning light. One of the great iconic safari sightings on Earth. Lion prides patrol the lugga, sometimes feeding on a kill from the night before. Cheetahs scan the open plains from anthill positions, watching the vast herds of wildebeest and zebra for signs of weakness.
The afternoon circuit moves to the Simba and Gol Kopjes. Ancient granite outcrops rising from the plains like scattered boulders from a giant's game, each one a pride's permanent territory. Bush picnic lunch in the shade of an acacia. Migration pursuit: wherever the great wildebeest herds are during your visit. Whether the Mara River crossings in the north, calving in the south or the long marches through the western corridor. Your guide positions the drive to intercept them.
5
Serengeti? Ngorongoro Crater Full Descent? Karatu
A final dawn game drive in the Serengeti. The plains in golden early light, the day's first predators and prey acting out the eternal drama of the African bush. Then the drive east through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, climbing from the Serengeti plains up through the Maasai bomas and acacia woodland of the highlands toward the crater rim.
At the rim, the full descent begins. The drive down 600 metres of crater wall through ancient forest is itself extraordinary. And then you emerge onto the crater floor and 25,000 animals stretch before you. A full day on the crater floor: lion prides on the open grasslands, the enormous buffalo herds, flamingos turning Lake Magadi pink, hippos at the Lerai Forest pools and the critically endangered black rhino. One of only ~26 remaining on the crater floor. Moving alone across the short grass plains. After the crater picnic lunch, the long climb back up the wall and the short drive back to Karatu for a second night in the highlands. Your last before tomorrow's transfer to Lake Manyara and the flight to Zanzibar.
6
Lake Manyara Final Game Drive? Zanzibar
The final safari morning. From Karatu you drive the short distance to Lake Manyara National Park. The jewel of the Rift Valley, compact and strikingly beautiful and the perfect closing chapter of the Northern Circuit. The park entrance leads through ancient groundwater forest before opening to the lake's edge: the soda lake turning pink with flamingos when conditions are right, large hippo pods in the shallows and somewhere in the branches of the mahogany forest. The famous tree-climbing lions of Manyara, resting six metres above the ground with complete indifference to the world below them.
After the morning game drive and a farewell bush picnic, you drive to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your domestic flight to Zanzibar. The flight takes approximately 45-60 minutes. You cross from the brown-gold savanna of the Rift Valley to the turquoise shallows and white-sand shores of the Indian Ocean. One of travel's great transitions, covering in less than an hour a distance that feels like it should take days. Your Zanzibar ground team meets you at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport and transfers you to your beach hotel. The ocean awaits.
7
Zanzibar Stone Town & Spice Farm
Zanzibar reveals itself slowly and the best way to begin is with its remarkable history. Stone Town. A UNESCO World Heritage Site. Is one of the most extraordinary old cities in Africa: a labyrinthine maze of narrow streets, carved wooden doors, Arabic arches, Indian merchants' houses and Swahili balconies, built over centuries at the intersection of Arab, Persian, Indian, African and European trade routes. Your guide walks you through the winding lanes, past the old slave market, the House of Wonders, the Old Fort and the spice souks where the scent of cloves and cardamom hangs in the warm air.
In the morning, a spice farm visit takes you deep into the island's agricultural heartland. Once the world's largest clove producer, Zanzibar's interior is a garden of extraordinary richness. Your guide picks fresh nutmeg, black pepper, vanilla, lemongrass and cinnamon from the growing plants and lets you taste them fresh. In the afternoon, the beach: you settle into the rhythm of the island. The rhythm that takes over every traveller who comes here. A sundowner as the Indian Ocean turns gold. Dinner in a beachfront restaurant with fresh Zanzibar seafood.
8
Zanzibar Snorkelling & Dolphin Encounter
Today is for the ocean. Zanzibar sits at the edge of one of the Indian Ocean's richest marine ecosystems and the snorkelling around Mnemba Atoll. A protected marine reserve a few kilometres off the northeast coast. Is genuinely world-class. The reef holds spectacular coral gardens, green turtles, octopus, hawksbill turtles and an extraordinary diversity of reef fish in a visibility that can exceed 30 metres on calm days. A boat trip out to the atoll in the morning, with a packed snorkelling lunch on the water.
In the afternoon, the option of Kizimkazi. A small fishing village on the southwest coast of Zanzibar where pods of bottlenose and humpback dolphins are almost always present. Swimming alongside wild dolphins in the warm, shallow waters of the Indian Ocean is one of the most joyful wildlife experiences available anywhere in East Africa. The day closes with an optional dhow sunset cruise. A traditional wooden sailing boat, cold drinks on board, as the sun sets over the African mainland in the west and the Indian Ocean turns pink and gold around you.
9
Zanzibar Free Day Beach & Optional Activities
The last full day of the journey. And the most open. Today is entirely yours. After nine days of early mornings, game drives and exploration, some guests simply want a beach lounger, a book and the warm Indian Ocean. That is perfect. Others want to fill this last full day with more of what Zanzibar offers. And there is no shortage of extraordinary options.
Ilha Prisão (Changuu Island): a short boat ride from Stone Town to an island that served as a quarantine station, now home to a colony of giant Aldabra tortoises. Some over 100 years old. That wander freely across the island while you walk among them. Jozani Forest: the last remnant of ancient coral rag forest in Zanzibar, home to the endangered Zanzibar red colobus monkey. One of Africa's rarest primates, found only on this island. Deep sea fishing: Zanzibar's waters are among the finest deep sea fishing grounds in East Africa. Marlin, sailfish and tuna are all seasonal targets. Or simply return to the beach, to the reef, to the rhythm of the island.
10
Departure Zanzibar Airport
The final morning. Breakfast at the hotel with the sound of the Indian Ocean. Depending on your flight time, there may be a few last hours on the beach. Or simply a slow and peaceful checkout, reliving the ten days in your mind. The Northern Circuit safari. Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Manyara. The flight transition over the Rift Valley to the turquoise Indian Ocean. Stone Town. The dolphins at Kizimkazi. Snorkelling at Mnemba. The last sunset over the ocean from the dhow's deck.
Your Zanzibar ground team transfers you to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport for your departure flight. Ten days. The complete Tanzania experience. Wilderness and ocean in one seamless journey. Haven Trails wishes you a safe and wonderful onward journey.
