Zanzibar — The Spice Island

Zanzibar is not simply a beach destination. It is one of the world's most layered and fascinating islands — a place where centuries of Arab, Persian, Indian, African, and European history have created an extraordinary cultural tapestry, where the finest coral reefs in the Indian Ocean lie minutes from white-sand shores, and where ancient forests shelter wildlife found nowhere else on Earth.

The island sits approximately 35 kilometres off the coast of mainland Tanzania in the Indian Ocean. Its position at the intersection of historic trade routes made it one of the most coveted pieces of land in the ocean world — the seat of the Omani Sultanate, the centre of the global clove trade (earning it the name the Spice Island), and for centuries one of the primary hubs of the East African slave trade. Stone Town, the island's historic capital, carries all of this history in its architecture, its food, its language, and its extraordinary atmosphere.

Beyond Stone Town, Zanzibar offers some of the most diverse island experiences available anywhere. The north coast (Nungwi and Kendwa) has the calmest, clearest water and the finest beaches. The east coast (Paje, Bwejuu, Jambiani) is wilder, windier, and world-famous for kitesurfing. The southeast and southwest coasts hold the dolphin swimming at Kizimkazi and the ancient Jozani Forest. And offshore, Mnemba Atoll provides world-class snorkelling and diving in a protected marine reserve of exceptional biodiversity.

The Best Time for Zanzibar

Zanzibar is a year-round island destination. Each season brings a different character — here is how to choose the right time for your trip.

Jun – Sep
DRY SEASON ★ PEAK
Calm seas, excellent Mnemba snorkelling visibility, consistent southeast trade winds for kitesurfing at Paje, and cooler temperatures. The best overall time for most activities.
Jan – Mar
WARM SEASON ★ GREAT
Warmest temperatures and warmest Indian Ocean — ideal for swimming and snorkelling. Calm north coast. Dolphin sightings excellent. Fewer tourists than peak season.
Oct – Nov
SHORT RAINS
Short rains bring occasional afternoon showers but the island remains beautiful. Fewer tourists, lower prices, and dramatic cloudy light for photography. Still excellent for all activities.
Apr – May
LONG RAINS
Long rains. Some beach days are interrupted by showers. East coast conditions can be rough. Significantly lower prices. Marine life is excellent — the ocean doesn't know about the rain.
Haven Trails Tip: For the best combination of snorkelling, beach, and kitesurfing conditions, plan June–September. For warm water and fewer crowds, January–March is excellent. Contact us with your preferred dates and we will advise on what to expect.

The House of Wonders and its history of Arab sultans. The Old Fort, the Orphanage (Mambo Msiige), the Darajani market, the waterfront, the Freddie Mercury Museum (born here in 1946). An afternoon walking the backstreets and carved door lanes without a guide — just exploration. The evening at the Forodhani seafood night market, where dozens of vendors grill fresh catch over charcoal as the Indian Ocean moves below the old walls.

In the afternoon, the drive south to Kizimkazi for dolphin swimming in warm, shallow Indian Ocean waters. A sunset dhow cruise closes the day.

East Coast Road Trip — Paje & Bwejuu
East Coast Day Trip — Paje, Bwejuu, Makunduchi East Coast Beaches Sleep: North Coast Hotel

A day trip to Zanzibar's spectacular east coast — long, windswept, dramatically different from the calm north coast. Paje is East Africa's kitesurfing capital, and even non-kiters can watch the colourful kites overhead and swim in the warm, shallow lagoon at low tide. Bwejuu and Jambiani are quieter, more traditional fishing villages on longer stretches of white sand. The east coast has a different energy to the north — wilder, rawer, and completely beautiful. A roadside seafood lunch at a local restaurant. Return to the north coast in the evening.

FAQ

Common Questions

Why choose 8 days in Zanzibar?
Eight days gives you the most complete Zanzibar experience available. You cover all the main attractions (Stone Town in full, Mnemba Atoll, Prison Island, Jozani Forest, dolphin swimming), add a full east coast road trip, and still have a full free beach day at the end to decompress. By Day 8, you know Zanzibar — not just the highlights, but the pace, the people, and the particular beauty of different parts of the island.
What is the Forodhani Night Market?
The Forodhani Night Market is one of Zanzibar's most beloved experiences — a waterfront market in Stone Town where dozens of vendors grill fresh fish, prawns, lobster, octopus, Zanzibar pizza, and sugarcane juice over charcoal as the Indian Ocean moves below the old seawall. It is the best street food experience on the island and an extraordinary social gathering that comes to life every evening.
What is the best time to visit Zanzibar for 8 days?
June–September delivers the best overall combination: excellent snorkelling conditions at Mnemba, calm north coast beaches, consistent southeast trade winds for kitesurfing at Paje, and the island at its most beautiful light. January–March is warmer and excellent for swimming. Haven Trails advises on timing based on your priorities.
Can I add scuba diving to this itinerary?
Yes — multiple dive days can be added. Mnemba Atoll offers exceptional diving at 10–30 metres with excellent visibility. The north coast has additional sites around the Nungwi lighthouse reef. Haven Trails works with PADI-certified operators and can arrange discover dives, guided dives, or full PADI Open Water courses as part of the itinerary.
Is the east coast worth visiting?
Absolutely — the east coast of Zanzibar is very different from the north coast, and seeing both gives you a far richer understanding of the island. The east coast is windier, wilder, and longer — Paje, Bwejuu, and Jambiani are among the most beautiful stretches of beach in Africa. The kitesurfing scene at Paje is world-class. The local fishing village atmosphere is more authentic than the more developed north coast resorts.
Is Zanzibar suitable for families with young children?
Yes — particularly for the north coast. The water is warm, calm, and shallow. The dolphin swimming, giant tortoises, and red colobus monkeys are magical for children. Stone Town and the Forodhani market are fascinating for older children. Haven Trails can tailor the pacing of the 8-day itinerary specifically for families, adjusting the activity intensity to match the children's ages and energy levels.
