The park contains eight primate species including the Udzungwa red colobus monkey found nowhere else on Earth. Sanje Waterfall — a 170-metre cascade — is the park's centrepiece and one of Tanzania's most spectacular natural features. The Sanje Mangabey and the Iringa red colobus are both endemic to these forests.

Why Haven Trails Adventures

Expert Southern Circuit Guides

Our southern circuit specialists have guided extensively in Nyerere, Mikumi, Ruaha and Udzungwa. They know the best game drive routes, the wildlife concentrations by season, and the hidden corners of these vast, untouched parks.

Private 4x4 Land Cruiser

All southern safaris depart in a private, custom-built 4x4 Land Cruiser with a 360° pop-up roof — never shared with strangers. Your vehicle, your pace, your experience.

The Road Less Travelled

The Southern Circuit is Tanzania's most undiscovered safari destination — fewer tourists, wilder landscapes, and wildlife encounters with depth and intimacy impossible in the Northern Circuit's busier parks.

Based in Tanzania

Haven Trails is based in Moshi, Tanzania — not a booking platform abroad. Our local team has deep knowledge of road conditions, seasonal wildlife movements, and the best lodges throughout the Southern Circuit.

Fully Customisable

Every southern safari can be extended, combined, upgraded, or tailored to your group. Add the Udzungwa hiking experience, extend with Kilwa Beach, or combine with the Northern Circuit. Tell us your vision.

Responsible Safari

Haven Trails operates in strict compliance with TANAPA and TAWIRI regulations. We use community lodges where available and support anti-poaching initiatives in Nyerere and Ruaha. TATO licensed and MNRT certified.

FAQ

Common Questions

What is special about Udzungwa Mountains?
The Udzungwa Mountains are part of the Eastern Arc Mountains — one of the world's biodiversity hotspots and often called 'Africa's Galápagos'. The forest contains eight primate species, two of which are endemic: the Udzungwa red colobus monkey and the Sanje Mangabey, both found nowhere else on Earth. Over 400 bird species have been recorded. Sanje Waterfall — at 170 metres — is one of Tanzania's most spectacular natural features and the centrepiece of the park's trail network.
How difficult is the Sanje Waterfall hike?
The Sanje trail is a moderate hike of approximately 3–4 km each way, with a moderate ascent through montane rainforest. Most fit adults can complete it comfortably in 2–3 hours. Good walking shoes or trainers are recommended. The trail can be muddy after rain. Haven Trails recommends bringing a change of clothes for the swim at the waterfall pool.
Can I swim at Sanje Waterfall?
Yes — the pool at the base of Sanje Falls is one of the great pleasures of the hike. The water is cool, clear, and deep enough for swimming. Bring a swimsuit and a towel. It is one of Tanzania's most beautiful natural swimming spots.
What is the Maasai cultural visit?
The afternoon Maasai cultural visit is to a local boma in the southern highlands — a genuine Maasai community encounter that includes traditional dances, homestead tour, explanation of Maasai customs and cattle culture, and the opportunity to purchase locally made beadwork directly from community craftspeople. Haven Trails works with community-owned cultural organisations for all cultural encounters.
Is this suitable for families?
Yes — the combination of open-plains game drives (accessible for all ages), the waterfall hike (suitable for children 8+ with good walking shoes), the Maasai cultural visit (fascinating for all ages), and the swimming at the waterfall base makes this one of the most family-friendly southern circuit itineraries available. Haven Trails can adjust pacing for families with younger children.
