Wilderness & Waterfall Discovery — 4-Day Safari — Southern Tanzania
A four-day southern Tanzania experience that combines the classic open-plains game drives of Mikumi National Park with the extraordinary montane rainforest and Sanje Waterfall hike of the Udzungwa Mountains — and a cultural encounter with the Maasai people of the southern highlands.
Haven Trails operates this itinerary in a private 4x4 Land Cruiser with a 360° pop-up roof, an expert English-speaking southern circuit guide, and all accommodation, park fees, and safari meals included. The Southern Circuit is Tanzania's hidden gem — wilder, less crowded, and in many ways more rewarding than the more famous Northern Circuit. This is the Africa that most visitors never see.
The Parks — What Awaits
Mikumi National Park
Tanzania's most accessible major national park from Dar es Salaam — Mikumi's Mkata flood plain is a superb open-plains game drive destination with reliable lion, elephant, giraffe, buffalo, zebra, and wildebeest. The park's hippo pool and Mwanambogo Dam are consistently productive. A compact and spectacular park that delivers genuine Big Five safari.
Udzungwa Mountains National Park
One of Africa's most biodiverse mountain ecosystems — the Udzungwa Mountains are a critically important section of the Eastern Arc Mountains, one of the world's biodiversity hotspots. The park contains eight primate species including the Udzungwa red colobus monkey found nowhere else on Earth. Sanje Waterfall — a 170-metre cascade — is the park's centrepiece and one of Tanzania's most spectacular natural features. The Sanje Mangabey and the Iringa red colobus are both endemic to these forests.
The Itinerary
1
Dar es Salaam → Mikumi — Afternoon Game Drive
Depart Dar es Salaam at 6:00 AM for the drive to Mikumi via Morogoro, where a hot lunch stop breaks the six-hour journey. You enter Mikumi in the afternoon — the Mkata plain immediately delivering the open-plains safari experience, with elephant herds, Masai giraffes, impala, wildebeest, and lions visible across the flat grassland in the late afternoon light. The evening game drive extends until just before sunset, then dinner and overnight at Camp Bastian.
2
Full Day Mikumi — All Habitats
A full day in Mikumi covering all the park's major circuits. The morning targets the hippo pool — one of Tanzania's most impressive and accessible, with dozens of hippos in and around the water. The Mwanambogo Dam provides excellent game viewing in the dry season, with species concentrating around the water. The afternoon drives extend into the flood plain and the woodland edges, where buffalo herds and zebra mix with lion prides resting in the acacia shade. Return to Camp Bastian for dinner.
3
Udzungwa Mountains — Sanje Waterfall Hike & Maasai Culture
After breakfast, the two-hour drive to Udzungwa Mountains National Park. Your guide leads you on the Sanje Waterfall trail — a guided hike through the montane rainforest, where the endemic Udzungwa red colobus and the rare Sanje Mangabey are encountered in the canopy overhead. The trail arrives at Sanje Waterfall — 170 metres of water crashing into a pool at the forest base, one of Tanzania's most spectacular natural features. Swimming in the pool at the waterfall's base is one of the highlights of the entire journey. A Maasai cultural visit in the afternoon — tribal dances, homestead tour, and local crafts — before the drive back to Mikumi for dinner.
4
En Route Game Drive → Return Dar es Salaam
An early breakfast at Camp Bastian, then an en route game drive through Mikumi on the way out — the park's morning wildlife activity providing a final set of sightings before the drive back to Dar es Salaam. You pass through the Mkata plain with animals still active in the cool of the morning before the heat builds. The drive back to Dar es Salaam takes approximately six hours with a lunch stop, arriving at your hotel, ferry terminal, or airport in the afternoon or early evening.

Why Haven Trails Adventures
Our southern circuit specialists have guided extensively in Nyerere, Mikumi, Ruaha and Udzungwa. They know the best game drive routes, the wildlife concentrations by season, and the hidden corners of these vast, untouched parks.
All southern safaris depart in a private, custom-built 4x4 Land Cruiser with a 360° pop-up roof — never shared with strangers. Your vehicle, your pace, your experience.
The Southern Circuit is Tanzania's most undiscovered safari destination — fewer tourists, wilder landscapes, and wildlife encounters with depth and intimacy impossible in the Northern Circuit's busier parks.
Haven Trails is based in Moshi, Tanzania — not a booking platform abroad. Our local team has deep knowledge of road conditions, seasonal wildlife movements, and the best lodges throughout the Southern Circuit.
Every southern safari can be extended, combined, upgraded, or tailored to your group. Add the Udzungwa hiking experience, extend with Kilwa Beach, or combine with the Northern Circuit. Tell us your vision.
Haven Trails operates in strict compliance with TANAPA and TAWIRI regulations. We use community lodges where available and support anti-poaching initiatives in Nyerere and Ruaha. TATO licensed and MNRT certified.
