The Mikumi Fly-In Safari
One unforgettable day. No overnight stay required. Fly straight from the beaches of Zanzibar into Mikumi National Park for a full day of game drives, then return to Zanzibar the very same evening.
From Zanzibar's Shores to Mikumi's Plains.
Not every traveller has a week to spare, and this safari is built for exactly that. The Mikumi Fly-In Safari begins with an early scheduled flight over the Indian Ocean and the Tanzanian mainland, landing you directly on an airstrip inside Mikumi National Park, one of Tanzania's most rewarding and easily reached wilderness areas. No overnight stay, no multi-day commitment. You step off the plane and straight into the bush before the morning is over.
Once on the ground, your safari guide is waiting and the game drive begins immediately. Mikumi's open Mkata floodplain, often likened to a miniature Serengeti, holds an extraordinary concentration of wildlife within easy reach of the airstrip. Every stretch of track is a fresh search for lion, elephant, giraffe, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, hippo, eland, hartebeest and the countless other species that make Mikumi one of Tanzania's finest short-safari destinations.
A relaxed lunch keeps you out among the wildlife through the middle of the day before the afternoon game drive continues the search across the plains. As the light softens, you're transferred back to the airstrip for your scheduled flight to Zanzibar, arriving back on the island the same evening. Just in time to trade dust for sand.
Mikumi National Park. Tanzania's Accessible Wilderness.
Mikumi National Park Tanzania's Mini-Serengeti
One of Tanzania's fourth-largest national parks, centred on the wide-open Mkata floodplain and flanked by the Uluguru and Rubeho mountain ranges. Its open grassland habitat and dense wildlife concentrations have earned it the nickname "Tanzania's mini-Serengeti."
Established in 1964, Mikumi National Park lies along the base of the Uluguru Mountains and is one of the most accessible parks in Tanzania, prized for its open grassland habitat that makes wildlife easy to spot. This fly-in day safari lands you on an airstrip inside the park itself, so your game drive begins within the hour of touching down.
The Mkata floodplain forms the heart of the ecosystem, drawing large herds of buffalo, wildebeest, zebra and giraffe onto its open grasslands, while lion prides patrol the plains in search of grazing herds. Elephant families move through the acacia woodland, hippo pods crowd the seasonal pools, and the park's elevated escarpments offer sweeping views rarely found on a single-day safari.
When to Go
The Mikumi Fly-In Safari is rewarding for most of the year. Each season offers a distinct experience. Below is a guide to what each period delivers.
Moments That Will Stay With You Forever
Step off the plane directly onto an airstrip inside Mikumi National Park, with your guide and Land Cruiser waiting. No road transfer. Your game drive begins within the hour.
Mikumi's open grassland habitat often draws large mixed herds of buffalo, zebra and wildebeest into full view, a scene that has earned the park its "mini-Serengeti" reputation.
Elephant herds move steadily through Mikumi's acacia woodland and open plains, often seen at close range from the vehicle track.
Seasonal pools along the floodplain host noisy hippo pods, while towering giraffe browse the surrounding acacia, a classic Mikumi pairing.
Mikumi's lion prides hunt across open grassland rather than dense bush, offering excellent visibility and some of the park's most memorable predator sightings.
Mikumi's grasslands support species less commonly seen elsewhere in Tanzania, including eland, hartebeest and the striking sable antelope.
Lunch is taken out among the wildlife between morning and afternoon game drives, a relaxed pause on the open plains of Mikumi.
A full day of game drives, then a short flight has you back on Zanzibar's white sand in time to watch the sunset over the Indian Ocean.
Your Day-Trip Experience
The safari begins with a transfer from the guest's Zanzibar accommodation to the airport for the scheduled flight to Mikumi National Park, with final flight details confirmed operationally rather than promised as a rigid sightseeing timetable. On landing at the park airstrip, a Haven Trails guide meets the group with a safari vehicle and begins exploring the Mkata floodplain, woodland and other accessible habitats according to road conditions and current wildlife information. The guide looks for elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, antelopes, hippos, lions and other animals known from Mikumi, while explaining behaviour and ecology and making clear that wild sightings can never be guaranteed. Photography stops and viewing time are adapted to what the group encounters instead of being divided into fixed morning and afternoon blocks. Lunch is included and taken at the arrangement specified for the safari, after which the game drive continues through the most productive areas available that day. In due course, the guide returns guests to the airstrip for the scheduled flight back to Zanzibar, where the ground transfer reconnects them with their accommodation and completes the same-day mainland safari experience.

Why Haven Trails Adventures
Every Haven Trails guide holds a Professional Tourist Guide Certification and has completed a minimum of 1,000 guided field hours before leading any client. Our guides don't just drive you to animals. They read the land, interpret behaviour, share ecology and make every sighting a story. Many guests describe their guide as the highlight of the entire trip.
Every safari departs in a custom-fitted 4x4 Land Cruiser with a 360-degree pop-up roof for unobstructed photography, forward-facing window seats, individual USB charging ports, a stocked cooler, binoculars, a first aid kit and a radio linked to the guide network. Maximum 6 guests per vehicle. Never a crowded bus.
We are based in Moshi, Tanzania. Not a booking platform in London or New York. Our team is in the field every week, tracking seasonal wildlife movements, building direct relationships with lodge managers and repositioning game drives in real time based on what the animals are doing. You benefit from intelligence that no international operator can match.
All Haven Trails guides carry satellite communication devices and emergency first aid supplies. We maintain evacuation protocols for Mikumi National Park in partnership with Flying Doctors Tanzania. Every client is issued emergency contact cards, and our 24/7 Moshi operations centre monitors all active safaris throughout the trip.
The Mikumi Fly-In Safari is a framework, not a formula. Every detail can be adjusted to your group. Travel dates (for seasonal wildlife positioning), group size, pace, dietary requirements, special interests (photography, birding) and any additions such as extra Zanzibar beach days before or after.
Haven Trails prioritises community-run lodges, Tanzanian-owned suppliers, and conservation-conscious accommodation partners. A portion of every booking supports local ranger training through the Kilimanjaro Conservation Fund.
