The Nyerere Fly-In Safari begins with an early scheduled flight over the Indian Ocean and the coastal plains, landing you directly on a dirt airstrip inside Nyerere National Park, Africa's largest protected wilderness. No overnight stay, no multi-day commitment. You step off the plane and straight into the bush before the morning is over.
Once on the ground, your safari guide is waiting and the game drive begins immediately. Nyerere's mix of open woodland, riverine forest and the Rufiji River system holds an extraordinary range of wildlife in real density. Every stretch of track is a fresh search for elephant, giraffe, buffalo, zebra, antelope, lion, wild dog, hippo, crocodile and the countless other species that make Nyerere one of Tanzania's richest yet least-crowded parks.
A relaxed bush lunch keeps you out among the wildlife through the middle of the day before the afternoon game drive continues the search. As the light softens, you're transferred back to the airstrip for your scheduled flight to Zanzibar, arriving back on the island the same evening. Just in time to trade dust for sand.

Africa's largest protected wilderness area. A vast, uncrowded landscape of woodland, riverine forest and the mighty Rufiji River, home to some of Tanzania's densest concentrations of elephant, hippo and wild dog.
Formerly part of the Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere National Park was established in 2019 and named after Tanzania's founding president, Julius Nyerere. It is now Africa's largest national park and one of the continent's least-visited wildlife strongholds, with a fraction of the vehicle traffic found in the northern circuit parks. This fly-in day safari lands you on an airstrip inside the park itself, so your game drive begins within the hour of touching down.
The Rufiji River and its surrounding floodplains and woodland form the backbone of the ecosystem, supporting one of East Africa's largest elephant populations, sizeable herds of buffalo and one of the last strongholds for the endangered African wild dog. Hippo pods and Nile crocodile line the riverbanks, while lion prides move through the miombo woodland in search of grazing herds of zebra and antelope.

Nyerere holds one of East Africa's largest elephant populations, and herds gathering along the riverbanks to drink and bathe are one of the park's most memorable sights.
Nyerere is one of the last strongholds for the endangered African wild dog, and this fly-in day trip gives a genuine chance of spotting one of Africa's rarest predators.
Nyerere's stretch of the Rufiji is home to some of Tanzania's densest hippo populations, wallowing in noisy pods alongside basking Nile crocodile.
Nyerere's lion prides move through open woodland rather than open plains, offering a different and often quieter style of predator viewing than the northern parks.

Your Day-Trip Experience
Guests transfer from their Zanzibar accommodation to the airport and board the scheduled flight to Nyerere National Park, with the aerial approach offering a possible first view of woodland, floodplains and the channels associated with the Rufiji River. A Haven Trails safari guide meets the flight at the park airstrip and begins the 4x4 game drive immediately, choosing routes according to current access, seasonal water levels and recent wildlife movement. Across Nyerere's varied habitats, the guide searches for elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebras, antelopes, hippos, crocodiles, lions and other species, including the possibility of African wild dogs, while avoiding any promise of a particular sighting. The journey is continuous and flexible, with time for photography, interpretation and patient observation whenever animals are found. A bush lunch is included as stated in the package and is served at an appropriate authorised location before the safari continues through another productive section of the park. When it is time to meet the return flight, the vehicle heads back to the airstrip and guests fly to Zanzibar, where their transfer returns them to the hotel after a full but realistically paced day in southern Tanzania's wilderness.
