Tanzania is one of the world's most senior-friendly safari destinations. Game drives are conducted from comfortable 4WD vehicles — no hiking required, no physical demands. The wildlife comes to you. With the right lodges and a thoughtfully paced itinerary, a Tanzania safari can be as restful or as immersive as you choose — and unlike almost any other travel experience, age genuinely enhances it.
Is a Tanzania Safari Suitable for Seniors?
Absolutely — and Tanzania is arguably one of the best safari destinations in Africa specifically for older travellers. Game drives are conducted seated in comfortable, shaded vehicles. There is no physical exertion required to see extraordinary wildlife. Most top-tier lodges have walk-in showers, accessible pathways, and comfortable furniture designed for longer stays. The pace is entirely within your control on a private safari.
What does require planning is the physical context: Tanzania's national parks are at altitude (the Ngorongoro Crater rim sits at 2,300m), the terrain is sometimes rough, and distances between parks are significant. Early morning game drives are standard, which can be tiring if the overall itinerary is too packed. The key to a successful senior safari is designing around rest, comfort, and flexibility — which is exactly what we specialise in.
We design every senior safari with three principles: fewer parks, more nights, slower pace. The most common mistake travellers make at any age is trying to cover too much in too little time. For seniors especially, depth beats breadth. Three parks over ten nights beats six parks over eight nights every time. You'll see more, feel better, and remember more.
Best Parks for a Senior Safari
Best Lodges for Senior Travellers
Lodge selection is the single most important planning decision for a senior safari. The key criteria are: proximity to the park (minimising transfer times), ground-level or low-step room access, comfortable beds with firm mattresses and good pillows, walk-in showers rather than baths, and a layout where the main dining and lounge areas are a short, flat walk from rooms. Medical facilities or access to medical evacuation are a secondary consideration worth confirming before you book.
Ground-level rooms or lodges with ramps. Walk-in showers with grab rails. Firm, high beds that are easy to get in and out of. Flat paths between accommodation and dining. In-room or on-call medical support. Air conditioning in rooms where available. Good lighting for evening navigation. A relaxed, unhurried evening dining pace. Emergency evacuation partnerships — ask us to confirm this for every property on your itinerary.
In Ngorongoro, crater rim lodges such as the Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge and similar properties offer spectacular views, well-appointed rooms and are accustomed to guests who prefer a slower pace. In the Serengeti, properties in the central Seronera area have the shortest game drive distances and the best road surfaces. We typically steer senior clients away from very remote fly camps, which can involve rough bush tracks and minimal medical infrastructure.
Health & Safety for Senior Safaris
A few health considerations are particularly relevant for older travellers in Tanzania. None are prohibitive — but all are worth discussing with your GP before departure.
| Consideration | Details | Our Advice |
|---|---|---|
| Altitude | Ngorongoro rim: 2,300m. Some guests experience mild altitude symptoms. | Rest on arrival day. Ascend slowly. Discuss with GP if cardiac history. |
| Malaria Prophylaxis | Tanzania is a malaria risk area. Prophylaxis is strongly recommended. | Consult GP 6+ weeks before departure. Bring DEET repellent. |
| Rough Terrain | Some game tracks are bumpy. Can aggravate back or joint conditions. | Request smoother-route parks. Bring a back support cushion for vehicles. |
| Heat | Midday temperatures 28–35°C in low-altitude parks. | Rest midday. Stay hydrated. Lodges provide purified water throughout. |
| Medical Evacuation | Hospital facilities are limited near parks. | Purchase AMREF Flying Doctors cover. We help arrange this. |
| Medications | Pharmacy access is limited outside Arusha and Moshi. | Bring full supply plus 20% extra. Carry in hand luggage. |
| Always consult your GP or travel health clinic at least 6 weeks before departure for personalised advice. | ||

Senior Safari Tips from Our Guides
- Fly between parks rather than drive. The Serengeti-Ngorongoro drive is beautiful but long and bumpy. A 30-minute charter flight transforms the experience. We factor this into senior itineraries as standard.
- Book private vehicles, not shared group safaris. Private vehicles allow you to stop when you want, stay as long as you like at a sighting, and return to camp whenever you need a rest. Group safaris operate on a schedule that may not suit your pace.
- Request dawn drives, not 5am drives. Many operators start at 5:30am which is very early. For senior clients, we typically build 6:30am starts which still catch the best morning light while allowing more sleep.
- Carry a neck pillow and back cushion in the vehicle. Game drive vehicles are 4WD Landcruisers — comfortable but not padded. A small lumbar cushion makes a long day's drive significantly more enjoyable.
- Purchase AMREF Flying Doctors membership before travel. This provides emergency air evacuation from anywhere in Tanzania to Nairobi for a modest annual fee. We consider it essential for all travellers but particularly for seniors.
- Take rest days seriously. On a standard itinerary, we build at least two complete half-day afternoons. Use them. A good lodge has beautiful grounds, superb meals and comfortable lounges. There is nothing to feel guilty about in spending an afternoon in a shaded chair watching impala graze outside your window.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Tanzania is one of Africa's most politically stable and tourist-safe countries. Crime targeting tourists is low. In the national parks, you are always with an experienced guide. The main safety considerations for seniors are health-related rather than security-related — malaria prevention, altitude awareness, and ensuring access to medical evacuation cover. We handle the logistics of all of these and brief every client before departure.
Very little, if you choose your activities wisely. Standard game drives involve no walking — you observe wildlife from the vehicle. Optional activities such as bush walks or walking safaris require more mobility, but these are entirely optional. Lodge grounds typically involve short flat walks between rooms and dining areas. We advise on mobility-specific considerations for each lodge before booking.
The dry season — June to October — is our top recommendation for senior travellers. Dry, mild temperatures, excellent wildlife visibility and firm, passable roads all make this the most comfortable period. January and February are also excellent for seniors who want to avoid the larger peak-season crowds. We advise against the long rains (April-May) as muddy tracks can make game driving harder and more physically uncomfortable.
In many cases, yes — with careful planning. Standard game drive vehicles can accommodate most levels of limited mobility. Some lodges have fully accessible rooms and pathways. We assess each client's specific requirements and design an itinerary and property selection accordingly. Please share detailed mobility information at the time of enquiry and we will give you an honest assessment of what is and isn't feasible for your specific situation.
