The Serengeti Fly-In Safari

Your safari begins not with a road transfer but with a scheduled flight, lifting off from Zanzibar's tropical coastline and crossing the Maasai Steppe toward the Serengeti. The approach itself is a highlight: as the plane descends, the endless golden plains unfold below, dotted with the shapes of grazing herds long before you land. There's no more direct way to trade the Indian Ocean for the world's most famous wilderness in a single morning.

Touching down on a dirt airstrip inside Serengeti National Park, you're met by your Haven Trails safari guide and 4x4 Land Cruiser at the aircraft steps. A warm "Karibu Serengeti!" and you're on your way. Rather than resting after the flight, your afternoon is put straight to use with a game drive en route to camp. Zebra herds crossing the track, a distant pride resting in the shade of an acacia, perhaps your first elephants of the trip. Dinner and your first night are spent inside the park, falling asleep to the calls of hyena and lion carrying across the plains.

Your first full Serengeti day begins at first light, when the park is at its quietest and predators are most active. The Seronera Valley, the river system at the heart of the park, is one of the most productive wildlife zones in Africa year-round: your guide checks sausage trees for resting leopards, reads fresh tracks from the night's hunts, and scans termite mounds for cheetah.

With the full day free for exploring, you cover ground methodically. Open plains for cheetah and herds of gazelle, woodland edges for giraffe and elephant, riverine forest for hippo pods and Nile crocodile. A bush picnic lunch is taken wherever the day's sightings lead. As light softens toward evening, the golden hour transforms the plains into a photographer's dream before you return to camp for dinner under a sky thick with stars.

Your second full day ventures further afield, exploring different wildlife-rich areas of the Serengeti beyond yesterday's circuit, with excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography. The Simba Kopjes, ancient granite outcrops weathered over 600 million years, rise from the plains like surfacing whales. Lions use them as elevated lookouts, cubs wrestling in the morning warmth while adults watch with the patient assurance of creatures who own the earth.

Depending on the season, this is often where the Great Migration positions your day: the January-March calving grounds south of Seronera, or the herds moving steadily north toward the Mara in the mid-year months. Your guide reads the radio network of fellow drivers to place you at the right sighting at the right time, whether that's a hunting pack of African wild dog, a cheetah family stalking gazelle, or simply thousands of wildebeest moving as one across the horizon. Dinner and your final night are spent inside the Serengeti.

There's time for one more search across the plains before you go. An early breakfast is followed by a final morning game drive, your guide making the most of the last hours to close out any gaps in your sightings list, whether that's a lingering hope for leopard, one more elephant family crossing, or simply the chance to watch the Serengeti wake up one last time.

The drive continues on to the airstrip, where you say your farewells and board your scheduled flight back to Zanzibar. In a little over an hour you're back over the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, three unforgettable days of game drives behind you and the rest of your Zanzibar time still ahead.
