Overview

Three Days. One Wild Escape from the Island.

Zanzibar gives you white sand and turquoise water. Nyerere National Park gives you something entirely different: lions on the move, elephant herds beneath doum palms and a slow boat drifting past basking crocodiles on the Rufiji River. The 3-Day Nyerere Fly-In Safari from Zanzibar is built for travellers who want a fuller mainland safari experience without giving up more than a few days of their island holiday. A short scheduled flight takes you from Zanzibar directly to Nyerere. Africa's largest game reserve turned national park. Two full days of game driving and a Rufiji River boat safari follow before you fly back to the coast.

Nyerere National Park, formerly part of the vast Selous Game Reserve, is one of Tanzania's greatest and least crowded wilderness areas. Its landscape is a mix of open grassland, acacia woodland, doum palm groves and miombo forest, all cut through by the Rufiji River. Africa's largest river system south of the equator. This combination of habitats supports large populations of lion, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and one of Tanzania's most important remaining populations of African wild dog, alongside hippos and crocodiles that crowd the riverbanks. Because Nyerere sees a fraction of the visitors of the northern parks, game drives here feel private and unhurried, often with no other vehicle in sight.

What makes this itinerary special is the Rufiji River boat safari. A vantage point no game drive can replicate. Gliding along the river channels and lagoons, you watch hippo pods surface and submerge, crocodiles bask motionless on sandbanks, and fish eagles, herons and kingfishers work the shoreline. Paired with two full days of game driving across Nyerere's plains and woodlands, this short escape delivers a genuine bush experience: big game, open water and total quiet, all within the frame of a Zanzibar holiday.

Nyerere National Park The Rufiji Wilderness

Tanzania's largest national park, carved from the former Selous Game Reserve. A vast, quiet wilderness of grassland, woodland and the mighty Rufiji River.

African Wild Dog Stronghold

Gazetted as a national park in 2019 from the northern sector of the former Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere is now Tanzania's largest national park and one of the largest protected wilderness areas in Africa. Unlike the busier northern circuit, Nyerere sees comparatively few visitors, which means game drives here often unfold in complete privacy. Open grassland and acacia woodland give way to doum palm groves and miombo forest, creating varied habitat for lion, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and one of East Africa's most significant surviving populations of African wild dog.

The Rufiji River, Tanzania's largest, is the park's defining feature. Its channels, lagoons and oxbow lakes support large concentrations of hippo and crocodile and draw wildlife of every kind to its banks, especially in the dry season. A boat safari along the Rufiji is one of the signature experiences of a Nyerere visit: river scenery, waterbirds and close encounters with hippo pods that simply aren't possible from a vehicle. Combined with classic game drives across the park's plains and woodland, Nyerere offers a complete, uncrowded safari experience within easy reach of Zanzibar.

Moments That Will Stay With You

A Short Flight, A Different World

Board a light aircraft in Zanzibar and step off less than an hour later onto a bush airstrip in Nyerere. Ocean views give way to river deltas, woodland and open plains beneath the wing.

Rufiji River Boat Safari

Drift along the Rufiji's channels and lagoons as hippos surface around the boat, crocodiles bask on sandbanks and fish eagles call overhead. A completely different perspective on the bush.

Uncrowded Game Drives

With far fewer visitors than the northern parks, Nyerere's plains and woodland often deliver lion, elephant and buffalo sightings with no other vehicle in sight.

Bush Lunch by the River

Enjoy lunch out on safari between game drives, with the Rufiji's woodland and waterways as your backdrop. A relaxed midday pause in the middle of the wild.

African Wild Dog Territory

Nyerere protects one of Tanzania's most important remaining populations of African wild dog. A rare and thrilling sighting for safari-goers who know how special they are.

Back on the Beach by Evening

After a full day of game viewing, fly back to Zanzibar in time to unwind with a sunset drink on the sand. The bush and the beach, both in one short trip.

Your safari begins with a short scheduled flight from Zanzibar directly into Nyerere National Park. From the air, the turquoise coastline gives way to the green sweep of the Rufiji delta, open woodland and the winding river channels that define this vast wilderness. On arrival at the airstrip, you are met by your safari guide and depart straight into the park for your first game drive, keeping an eye out for lion, elephant, giraffe, buffalo, zebra and, if you are fortunate, a pack of African wild dogs moving through the woodland.

Lunch is enjoyed out on safari, with game viewing continuing through the afternoon as your guide tracks wildlife across Nyerere's plains and acacia woodland. Later in the day, you head down to the Rufiji River for a boat safari. Gliding along the water, you watch pods of hippo surfacing close to the boat, crocodiles basking motionless on the sandbanks, and waterbirds working the reeds and shoreline as the light softens over the river. As evening falls, you transfer to Selous Safari Lodge for dinner and your overnight stay, falling asleep to the sounds of the Rufiji wilderness.

After breakfast at Selous Safari Lodge, you depart with a packed lunch for a full day exploring deeper into Nyerere National Park. With the whole day ahead, your guide is free to range further afield, covering the seasonal wetlands and marshes that draw concentrations of birdlife, the open grasslands where zebra and giraffe graze in loose herds, and the acacia woodland favoured by elephant and buffalo. This is the day to slow down, follow tracks and let sightings unfold at their own pace, far from any other vehicle.

Lunch is enjoyed out in the bush at a scenic spot chosen by your guide, before the game drive continues into the afternoon. Across the day's varied habitats, you have excellent chances of elephant, lion, giraffe, buffalo and zebra, along with spotted hyena and Nyerere's rich variety of resident and migratory birds. As the light turns golden in the late afternoon, you make your way back to Selous Safari Lodge for dinner and a second night on the banks of the Rufiji, with the sounds of the river and the surrounding bush after dark.

After breakfast at Selous Safari Lodge, you set out for one more game drive through Nyerere National Park. With two days of exploring already behind you, your guide can focus this final outing on any wildlife or habitats you have particularly enjoyed, whether that means more time along the river woodland, another attempt at a wild dog sighting, or simply slow, unhurried photography as the morning light plays across the plains.

Lunch is once again enjoyed out on safari as game viewing continues into the early afternoon, giving you a last chance to take in Nyerere's plains, waterways and woodland before it is time to head back. Later in the afternoon, you transfer to the airstrip for your scheduled flight back to Zanzibar, arriving on the island with a full safari behind you and the rest of your beach holiday still ahead.

FAQ

Common Questions

How long is the flight from Zanzibar to Nyerere?
The scheduled flight between Zanzibar and Nyerere National Park typically takes under an hour, depending on the specific airstrip and routing used on the day. Flights are arranged as part of your package, with airstrip transfers timed to connect smoothly with your game drives on arrival and departure.
Is three days enough to see wildlife in Nyerere?
Yes. This itinerary is designed to make the most of a short window, with a game drive and boat safari on arrival, a full day of game driving on Day 2, and a further game drive on Day 3 before your return flight. While a longer stay always increases your chances of specific sightings, three days of game viewing plus a river boat safari gives a rich and varied introduction to Nyerere's wildlife and landscapes.
What is the Rufiji River boat safari like?
The boat safari takes you along the channels and lagoons of the Rufiji River, Tanzania's largest river system. It's a relaxed, seated experience with your guide pointing out hippo pods, basking crocodiles, waterbirds and river scenery along the way. It offers a very different perspective from a vehicle game drive and is one of the highlights of visiting Nyerere.
Where will I stay overnight?
You will spend one night at Selous Safari Lodge, set directly on the banks of the Rufiji River inside Nyerere National Park. The lodge offers en-suite rooms, river views, a swimming pool and full board, and is positioned close to both the park's game-drive circuits and the river for the boat safari.
Can this safari be combined with more time in Zanzibar?
Absolutely. This 3-day itinerary is designed to slot into a longer Zanzibar holiday. Most guests book it as a short break in the middle of a beach stay, flying out to Nyerere and returning to continue their island time. We can also extend the safari itself to four or more nights if you would like additional time in the park.
What should I pack for this fly-in safari?
Pack light, as fly-in safaris often have baggage weight limits (typically around 15kg in a soft-sided bag). Bring neutral-coloured clothing, a light layer for the boat safari and early mornings, sun hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, prescription antimalarials, binoculars and a camera. We send all guests a detailed packing list and pre-departure information upon booking.
