Overview

The Endless Plains. No Long Road Transfers.

For travellers based on Zanzibar who want the real Serengeti experience without spending days on the road to get there, this fly-in safari is the answer. A direct scheduled flight lifts you off the island in the morning and sets you down on a Serengeti airstrip by early afternoon, with your safari guide waiting and a game drive already underway before the day is out.

The Serengeti needs no introduction. Its name comes from the Maasai word "Siringet", meaning "the land that runs on forever", and it is home to one of the greatest concentrations of wildlife on the planet. Over three days and two full nights inside the park, you have genuine time to explore different wildlife areas: the Seronera Valley's resident predators, open plains thick with zebra and wildebeest, and riverine forest where leopards drape themselves over acacia branches. This isn't a rushed day trip. It's a proper Serengeti safari, compressed into a window that fits around a Zanzibar beach holiday.

Each day is built around extensive game drives, with your guide adjusting the route based on where the wildlife is moving. Lunches are taken out in the park, evenings are spent at camp listening to the sounds of the African night, and on your final morning you get one more drive before the short flight back to the coast.

Inside the Serengeti Ecosystem

Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park The Endless Plains

Africa's most iconic wilderness. Where the Big Five roam across 14,763 square kilometres of open savannah and the Great Migration plays out in real time.

Tanzania's oldest and largest national park, the Serengeti was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981. Its flat, treeless plains stretch to every horizon, and its wildlife density is among the highest anywhere in Africa. The Seronera Valley in the central Serengeti is one of the best places on the continent to see predators, with lions resting in sausage trees, cheetahs scanning from termite mounds and leopards draped over acacia branches with fresh kills nearby.

Landing on an airstrip inside or close to the park means your game drive begins almost immediately, rather than after a full day of travel. Over the following two days, your guide takes you across different sectors of the ecosystem, tracking fresh sign and radio reports from the wider guide network to put you in front of predators, elephant herds, and, depending on the season, the moving front of the Great Migration itself.

Moments That Will Stay With You

Landing in the Wild

Touch down on a Serengeti airstrip and be on your first game drive within the hour. No long transfer roads, just open plains from the moment you step off the plane.

Two Full Days in the Seronera Valley

Extended time in one of Africa's most productive predator zones, with real opportunities for lion, leopard and cheetah sightings across different parts of the ecosystem.

Big Five in Open Country

Lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo are all regularly encountered on the Serengeti plains, with rhino sightings possible in the right season and location.

Bush Lunch Under an Acacia

Your guide parks in the shade, unpacks the hamper and lays out lunch in the middle of one of the world's greatest national parks, zebra or giraffe often visible in the distance.

The Serengeti at Night

Zero light pollution and a sky dense with stars. Hyenas calling in the darkness, a lion roaring somewhere on the plain. Two nights is enough to feel truly immersed.

One Last Morning Drive

Before the flight back to Zanzibar, a final sunrise game drive gives you one more chance at a great sighting, closing out the safari on a high note.

Departure
1
Zanzibar ? Serengeti National Park Straight Into the Plains
Direct Flight Zanzibar ? Serengeti Airstrip Afternoon Game Drive Serengeti Camp or Lodge Dinner Included

Your safari begins with a direct scheduled flight from Zanzibar straight into Serengeti National Park, avoiding the long road transfer entirely. As the plane descends, the plains stretch out below in every direction. Flat, golden and utterly vast. Your safari guide is waiting at the airstrip with a warm "Karibu!", and after a quick introduction you climb straight into the Land Cruiser. There is no settling-in period here. The game drive starts the moment you leave the strip.

The afternoon is spent working the plains near your camp, watching for lion prides resting in the shade, elephant families moving through acacia woodland, giraffe browsing at the treeline, and zebra and wildebeest herds grazing across the open grassland. Cheetahs are often spotted scanning from termite mounds, and leopards are worth watching for in the riverine forest. As the light softens toward evening, you head to camp for dinner and your first night under the Serengeti sky.

Full-Day Serengeti Safari Predators, Plains & Photography
Dawn to Dusk Game Drives Serengeti Camp or Lodge All Meals Included Photography Focus Day

Your one full day in the Serengeti is dedicated entirely to exploring the park in depth. After an early breakfast, your guide sets out to cover different wildlife areas: the Seronera Valley's dense predator country, open plains where prey herds concentrate, and riverine forest that offers cover for leopards and lounging lion prides. The radio network of guides shares live sightings throughout the day, meaning fresh news of a kill, a den site or a rare sighting can redirect your route in minutes.

Lunch is enjoyed out in the park. A relaxed picnic stop with the plains spreading in every direction and wildlife often visible while you eat. The afternoon drive shifts focus to different terrain, giving you a genuinely varied picture of the ecosystem rather than repeating the same circuit. As the light turns golden, silhouettes lengthen across the grass and the photography becomes exceptional, before you return to camp for your second dinner and night inside the Serengeti.

Serengeti ? Zanzibar One Last Morning on the Plains
Morning Game Drive Transfer to Serengeti Airstrip Scheduled Flight to Zanzibar Breakfast Included

After breakfast at camp, you head out for one final game drive across the Serengeti plains. Mornings here bring their own energy: nocturnal predators are still active, mist can hang low over the grassland, and the light is soft and ideal for photography. Your guide uses this last drive to chase any sightings you may have missed, whether that's a particular species, a better view of a pride, or simply more time watching the plains wake up.

With the morning drive complete, you transfer to the airstrip for your scheduled flight back to Zanzibar, arriving on the island with a camera full of images and a genuine sense of having experienced the Serengeti properly, not just passed through it.

FAQ

Common Questions

How does the flight from Zanzibar work?
Scheduled flights connect Zanzibar directly to airstrips serving the Serengeti, with journey times of roughly 1.5 to 2 hours depending on the route and any stops. Flights are not included in the safari price, but Haven Trails is happy to advise on suitable flight schedules so your arrival lines up smoothly with your guide's pickup at the airstrip.
Will I see the Big Five in three days?
The Serengeti offers excellent chances for lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo, all of which are encountered regularly across the itinerary's two full game-drive days. Black rhino are rarer in the Serengeti itself and not guaranteed on this route. While no wildlife encounter is ever guaranteed in the wild, the extended time in the park and our guides' local knowledge make strong sightings highly likely.
What accommodation options are available?
Haven Trails offers three accommodation tiers, all at the same well-positioned Serengeti camp for both nights. Silver / Budget: public campsite accommodation keeping costs low while delivering the full safari experience. Gold / Luxury: permanent tented camps and lodges with en-suite facilities and restaurant dining. Platinum / Exclusive: private luxury camps with personalised service. All tiers use the same expert guide, same 4x4 vehicle and the same extensive game drives.
Can this safari be extended or combined with other parks?
Yes. This 3-day itinerary is one of our most popular Zanzibar extensions, and it can easily be lengthened by an extra night in the Serengeti or combined with a Ngorongoro Crater add-on for a broader Northern Circuit experience. Contact us to discuss a tailored extension.
What should I pack for this safari?
Essentials: neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, olive, beige), a light layer for cooler mornings and evenings, a wide-brimmed sun hat, high-factor sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars (8x42 recommended), a camera with a telephoto lens if possible, comfortable closed-toe shoes and a light rain jacket. Since domestic flights often carry strict luggage limits, we recommend a soft-sided bag. We send all guests a detailed packing list upon booking.
